Book Singapore s Park System Master Planning

Download or read book Singapore s Park System Master Planning written by Raffaella Sini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the evolution of Singapore’s parks system, from colonial to present times. Further, it contextualizes the design and planning of parks in the general discourse on western and eastern traditions: early twentieth century western conceptions ‘imported’ during colonialism; modernism; postmodernism, and the contemporary ecological debate. Park system planning products respond to national policies and result in structural urban elements and a range of park types. Global (western ideology) and local issues have influenced park system planning and the physical design of individual parks over time. However, in Singapore the eastern literature has not addressed the development of parks and urban green spaces in terms of historical perspective. The publication reveals the interrelations between visual representations and changing political ideologies. Singapore’s system of public parks is shown to represent an iconography created by the state. Its set of constructed narratives elucidates on the potential social, cultural and environmental roles of public parks. However, Singapore’s park system presents a novel paradigm for expanding Asian cities, characterized by evolving urban imaging strategies. In framing Singapore’s case study within the broader perspective of eastern applications of western planning and design practices, and constructions of nation in post-colonial countries, the manuscript establishes the contribution of the Singaporean model of design and planning of parks to the international debate.

Book Contemporary Architecture

Download or read book Contemporary Architecture written by Marta Tobolczyk and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-05 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an exciting journey into the most recent architectural achievements, seen in their complexity and plurality, and described in the most objective and truthful way. The development of contemporary architecture is presented as it commenced more than a century ago, as it tried to reconcile democratic ideals with the forces of the Industrial Era. In contrast to many books on the modern-day art of building, the development of architecture is not described chronologically here, but, rather, independently for each selective architectural trend. This allows a better explanation of some evolutionary processes and the continuity of each trend. Thanks to such an approach, this book will serve as a convenient tutorial for courses on history of contemporary architecture in all art and architectural schools.

Book Modernity Nation and Urban Architectural Form

Download or read book Modernity Nation and Urban Architectural Form written by Shireen Jahn Kassim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how Malaysia, as a multicultural modern nation, has approached issues of nationalism and regionalism in terms of physical expression of the built environment. Ever since the nation’s post-Colonial era, architects and policy makers have grappled with the theoretical and practical outcomes of creating public architecture that effectively responds to traditions, nationhood and modernity. The authors compile and analyse prevailing ideas and strategies, present case studies in architectural language and form, and introduce the reader to tensions arising between a nationalist agenda and local ‘regionalist’ architectural language. These dichotomies represent the very nature of multicultural societies and issues with identity; a challenge that various nations across the globe face in a changing environment. This topical and pertinent volume will appeal to students and scholars of urban planning, architecture and the modern city.
