Those of children with disabilities take extra burden in parenting their children as these children tend to have more externalizing behaviour problems, which might have influence on the family functioning. Researchers suggested a positive relationship between family functions and family leisure activities (Zabriskie & McCormick, 2003). Perceived discrimination is also believed to be one of the possible factors contributing to the relationship. The purpose of the study is to explore the relationship between perceived discrimination, family functioning and the leisure patterns in these families. Results indicate that there is positive relationship between family leisure involvement and family functioning in these families. Family functioning of families of those reported experience of perceived discrimination is significantly lower than those who reported no perceived discrimination. However, there is no difference in family leisure involvement in both groups. Their leisure pattern does not mediate the association between perceived discrimination and family functioning. Book The Impact of Mental Retardation on Family Functioning

Download or read book The Impact of Mental Retardation on Family Functioning written by Ngoakoana Emma Pilusa and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study is to establish the impact of mental retardation on family functioning. The researcher conducted the research in the Waterberg district of the Limpopo province. The lack of insight on the part of the family on how to cope with such circumstances motivated the researcher to conduct the study. Most families do not have the experience of caring for a mentally handicapped member and therefore need information and support on how to cope with the condition. The study is qualitative and exploratory in nature. The research question was: What is the impact of mental retardation on family functioning? A simple random sampling was used in the study. The sample was selected from all the registered children attending three different day- care centres in the Waterberg district for the past three months prior the investigation. Ten parents (one per household) of children with mental retardation were interviewed using a semi structured interview schedule. A phenomenological design was used and participants' experiences of family life and reactions to the realization that they have a child with mental retardation are discussed. Data consisted of audio taped and written interviews. The data collected was transcribed and analyzed according to qualitative methods. The research findings show that mental retardation has an impact on family functioning. Families had to make new adjustments to accommodate the child and his/her special needs. The researcher recommends that service providers should receive training on issues related to mental retardation so as to provide the much needed services to these families. It was found that the burden of caring, financial constraints, lack of community support, the manner in which the disclosure was handled and the lack of services, all had a negative impact on the family.

Book Families Risk and Competence

Download or read book Families Risk and Competence written by Michael Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems of studying families arise from the difficulty in studying systems where there are multiple elements interacting with each other and with the child. How should this system be described? Still other problems relate to indirect effects; namely the influence of a particular dyad's interaction on the child when the child is not a member of the dyad. While all agree that the mother-father relationship has important bearing on the child's development, exactly how to study this--especially using observational techniques--remains a problem. While progress in studying the family has been slow, there is no question that an increase in interest in the family systems, as opposed to the mother-child relationship, is taking place. This has resulted in an increase in research on families and their effects. This volume, by leading figures in child development on families, attests to the growing sophistication of the conceptualization and measurement techniques for getting at family processes. The third in a series that aims to address topics relevant to the developmental problems and developmental disabilities of retardation, this volume is divided into two parts. Section 1 presents basic family processes and approaches for describing family dynamics. It deals with these issues from a broad perspective, including studying families at dinner, families in different cultural contexts, and the understanding of family in nonhuman primates. Section 2 looks at family processes in the service of studying families at-risk. The risk factors include poverty, malnutrition, and developmental delay and retardation. The study of family processes in these contexts provides data on family dynamics as well as how these dynamics impact on the children's developing competence. This volume will be informative for researchers, clinicians, and educators from a variety of disciplines and settings. The editors' aim is to bring a greater clarity to issues concerning the family life of children and highlight new research and possibilities for intervention.

Book Evaluating Family Programs

Download or read book Evaluating Family Programs written by Francine H. Jacobs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diverse composition of American families and changing ways of raising our children have become subjects of intense scrutiny by researchers and policymakers in recent years. Shifting demographics and work patterns, growing numbers of women in the work force, teenage pregnancy, single-parent families, and the deinstitutionalization of the elderly, disabled, and mentally ill--all these trends have significantly affected family life. Evaluating Family Programs effectively bridges the gap between researchers and practitioners in order to bring practical, understandable advice to providers of family programs and to program funders and policymakers. Heather B. Weiss and Francine H. Jacobs have collected in this volume works which move outside the traditional approaches of their disciplines to create new models for delivering and evaluating services. This sets a mood of genuine inquiry and excitement about successful aspects of programs while maintaining openness about the limitations of both research and practice. By expanding the research model, this work is an attempt to understand reciprocal influences of extended family, culture, community, and social institutions. It urges those who advocate program accountability to understand that not all types of evaluations are appropriate for all programs, and it notes that limitations in current evaluation technologies make it difficult to evaluate outcomes. Evaluating Family Programs reminds the reader that in order to develop sound family policy we must look at children and families in context. Beacuse policymakers, program administrators, and informed citizens have come to rely more upon the results of evaluation research, we must improve our methods while not losing sight of its limitations. It is a thought-provoking contribution to the efforts of those who seek to support the American family with compassion, understanding, and realism.
