Book A Descriptive Assessment and Meta Analysis of The Good Behavior Game as a Behavior Change Procedure in Schools

Download or read book A Descriptive Assessment and Meta Analysis of The Good Behavior Game as a Behavior Change Procedure in Schools written by Alysha J. Turner and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The school to prison pipeline (STPP) is a nationwide trend in which students are being removed from the public-school system that leads to the path towards the juvenile and criminal justice system. One of the causes as to why this pipeline has become a trend is disruptive behavior in the classroom being labeled as a severe problem. The Good Behavior Game (GBG) has been shown to be an effective behavioral intervention to address a variety of disruptive behaviors. Although there has been much literature on the GBG, most recent meta-analytic and descriptive reviews have not sufficiently quantified the effects across several variables or influences. The current review analyzed peer-reviewed articles on the GBG across 15 studies, representing 893 students from pre-school through high school. Data from these studies were examined by calculating the mean baseline difference (MBL) and analyzing the effects with respects to education level, settings, and disabilities. Results revealed that the majority of articles resulted in effect sizes ranging from 96% to 70% on decreasing disruptive behaviors in the classroom.

Book The Good Behavior Game in an Alternative Education Setting

Download or read book The Good Behavior Game in an Alternative Education Setting written by Chelsey M. Brophy and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the mental health needs of youth reaching great numbers, the need for early intervention and prevention efforts is crucial. This is particularly true given the at-risk population of youth placed in alternative education settings in the United States. The Good Behavior Game is a widely known and recognized "behavioral vaccine" that has been researched for several decades and shown to have lasting, positive outcomes for youth. The purpose of the current study was to explore the effects of the GBG on both student and teacher behavior within the alternative education setting, and highlight the social validity of this intervention within the unique setting with a high-needs, at-risk population. Specific variables of interest included student disruptive behavior, student engagement, teacher praise and reprimands, acceptability of the intervention, and challenges and suggestions for future intervention implementation within the alternative education setting. The results of this study are promising regarding student outcomes, including decreased disruptive behavior overall and increased academic engagement. No significant findings surfaced for changes in teacher behavior. Overall, most teachers found the intervention acceptable; although, had suggestions and recommendations for future intervention efforts. Further, several challenges were identified given the context and population of this setting. Continued research within the alternative education setting including investigation of outcomes for both teachers and students, as well as considerations of contextual variables will be beneficial in order to continue to meet the needs of these students and federal guidelines requiring the use of evidence-based interventions.

Book Investigating the Use of a Positive Variation of the Good Behavior Game in a High School Setting

Download or read book Investigating the Use of a Positive Variation of the Good Behavior Game in a High School Setting written by Shauna Lynne and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Good Behavior Game (GBG) is an example of an interdependent group contingency that can be used in classrooms to manage behavior. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a positive variation of the GBG in which teachers attend to rule-following behavior, as opposed to the original version of the game in which teachers attend to rule-breaking behavior. In previous studies, researchers have demonstrated the effectiveness of the GBG in decreasing problematic behavior and/or increasing productive or desired behavior in classroom settings and in hospital settings and spanning preschool-aged, elementary toddlers to high school-aged adolescents. An A/B/A/B withdrawal design was used across three classrooms to evaluate the effectiveness of the positive variation of the GBG. Reductions in disruptive behavior occurred in all three classrooms during intervention phases; increases in appropriately engaged behavior increased during intervention phases in all three classrooms as well. This study demonstrated that a positive variation of the GBG could be used effectively within a general education high school setting. --Page i.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social problems in many domains, including health, education, social relationships, and the workplace, have their origins in human behavior. The documented links between behavior and social problems have compelled governments and organizations to prioritize and mobilize efforts to develop effective, evidence-based means to promote adaptive behavior change. In recognition of this impetus, The Handbook of Behavior Change provides comprehensive coverage of contemporary theory, research, and practice on behavior change. It summarizes current evidence-based approaches to behavior change in chapters authored by leading theorists, researchers, and practitioners from multiple disciplines, including psychology, sociology, behavioral science, economics, philosophy, and implementation science. It is the go-to resource for researchers, students, practitioners, and policy makers looking for current knowledge on behavior change and guidance on how to develop effective interventions to change behavior.

Book Evaluating the Effects of and Preference for Positive and Negative Punishment in the Good Behavior Game

Download or read book Evaluating the Effects of and Preference for Positive and Negative Punishment in the Good Behavior Game written by Erika Silva and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Good Behavior Game (GBG) is a group contingency that has demonstrated to be an effective intervention in reducing disruptive behavior across various settings, populations, and range of classroom grades. The GBG involves immediate positive punishment following disruptive behavior. Response cost procedures have also been used during the GBG, but previous research has not directly compared positive and negative punishment in the GBG. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of and preference for positive and negative punishment in the GBG. We implemented two versions of the game, the GBG and GBG Response Cost (RC) in a second-grade general education classroom. In addition, we measured student and teacher collateral behaviors. Results of this study demonstrated that the GBG RC initially reduced disruptive behavior to lower levels than the GBG, but both versions of the game were effective in reducing disruptive behavior. We also found that the teacher and most of the students preferred to play the GBG RC. This paper discusses the potential benefits of playing the GBG and provides future recommendations.

Book Implementing the Use of a Positive Variation of the Good Behavior Game with the Use of a Computer based Program

Download or read book Implementing the Use of a Positive Variation of the Good Behavior Game with the Use of a Computer based Program written by Shauna Lynne and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Good Behavior Game (GBG) is an interdependent group contingency designed to address behavioral concerns. The vast majority of published findings on the GBG have supported its effectiveness in decreasing disruptive behavior in classroom settings. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and the social validity of a positive variation of the GBG in which teachers were asked to use ClassDojo to manage each team's progress. ClassDojo is a computer-based program that enables teachers to track student behavior and monitor progress by way of a virtual system. Dependent variables included class-wide disruptive and academically engaged behavior (AEB), teachers' ratings on the Behavior Intervention Rating Scale (BIRS), and the rate of teacher praise statements delivered in each phase. Overall, results indicated that a positive variation of the GBG with ClassDojo was effective at reducing disruptive behavior, increasing AEB, and was rated as socially valid. Additionally, when the GBG was in place, increases in the amount of behavior-specific praise (BSP) statements delivered were observed across all three classrooms. --Page ii.

Book Effects of the Good Behavior Game on Reducing the Number of Inappropriate Mealtime Behaviors of Urban Elementary Children with Specific Learning Disabilities

Download or read book Effects of the Good Behavior Game on Reducing the Number of Inappropriate Mealtime Behaviors of Urban Elementary Children with Specific Learning Disabilities written by Kathryn Adorno-Price and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the Good Behavior Game on reducing the amount of out of seat and talking out behavior of a group of fourth and fifth grade urban elementary school students with Specific Learning Disabilities. A changing criterion design was used over a six-week period. Baseline was taken on out of seat and talking out behavior of the target students in the lunchroom. Interobserver agreement was taken approximately 1.5 times per week and averaged 79% for teams A and B. During The Good Behavior Game, an interdependent contingency was used to change target behaviors. The lunchroom monitor completed a questionnaire regarding her perceptions of each students' ability to perform out of seat behavior before and after the intervention. The students completed a pre and posttest to rate their perceptions of their ability to perform target behaviors. Results of this study suggest that the Good Behavior Game was an effective tool for helping children reduce out of seat and talking out behaviors. However, several limitations and poor social validity affected the results.

Book Measurement of Child Behavior Via Classroom Observations in the Good Behavior Game Professional Development Models Randomized Control Trial

Download or read book Measurement of Child Behavior Via Classroom Observations in the Good Behavior Game Professional Development Models Randomized Control Trial written by Anja Kurki and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Good Behavior Game (GBG) is a classroom-based behavior management strategy aimed at reducing aggressive/disruptive behavior and socializing children into the role of student. GBG, delivered in first and second grades, has been shown to reduce rates of substance abuse and other deleterious outcomes into young adulthood (Brown, C.H. et al 2007, Ialongo, et al. 2001, Kellam, S.G. et al, 2008 and Poduska, J.M. et al. 2008, Kellam, S.G. et al 1998, Ialongo, N.S. et al. 1999), especially for students that were rated as aggressive, disruptive at entry into first grade/baseline by their teachers. Despite GBG being recognized as an evidence-based prevention program (National Registry of Evidence-based programs and Practices, NREPP, http://nrepp.samhsa.gov/), published data to date is mostly limited to African American and Anglo populations that are native English speakers. This study is a four-year IES Goal 3 project (R305A090446, PI Poduska) that was designed to understand the level of professional development (PD) required for teachers to implement and sustain the Good Behavior Game (GBG), a universal preventive intervention. Two models of PD are being compared with each other and with a control condition, in a randomized field trial. "GBG Basic," which provides group-based pre-implementation training to teachers supplemented by a group-based booster session, and "GBG w Coach," which has the same activities under "GBG Basic" plus a coach who works directly in the classroom with the teacher. This trial takes place in multilingual context of Houston Independent School district. Five tables are appended.

Book Adaptive Learning and the Human Condition

Download or read book Adaptive Learning and the Human Condition written by Jeffrey C. Levy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive Learning and the Human Condition provides a coherent and comprehensive introduction to the basic principles of classical (Pavlovian) and instrumental (Skinnerian) conditioning. When combined with observational learning and language, they are responsible for human accomplishment from the Stone Age to the digital age. This edition has been thoroughly updated throughout, relating adaptive learning principles to clinical applications as well as non-traditional topics such as parenting, moral development, and the helping professions. Defining learning as an adaptive process enables students to understand the need to review the basic animal research literature in classical and operant conditioning and consider how it applies to human beings in our everyday lives. Divided into four parts, this book covers historical research into psychology and adaptive learning, principles of adaptive learning (prediction and control), adaptive learning and the human condition, and behavior modification and the helping professions. The book showcases how an adaptive learning strategy can be practical, diagnostic, and prescriptive, making this an essential companion for psychology students and those enrolled in programs in professional schools and helping professions including psychiatry, special education, health psychology, and physical therapy.

Book The Handbook of Research Synthesis and Meta Analysis

Download or read book The Handbook of Research Synthesis and Meta Analysis written by Harris Cooper and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2019-06-14 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research synthesis is the practice of systematically distilling and integrating data from many studies in order to draw more reliable conclusions about a given research issue. When the first edition of The Handbook of Research Synthesis and Meta-Analysis was published in 1994, it quickly became the definitive reference for conducting meta-analyses in both the social and behavioral sciences. In the third edition, editors Harris Cooper, Larry Hedges, and Jeff Valentine present updated versions of classic chapters and add new sections that evaluate cutting-edge developments in the field. The Handbook of Research Synthesis and Meta-Analysis draws upon groundbreaking advances that have transformed research synthesis from a narrative craft into an important scientific process in its own right. The editors and leading scholars guide the reader through every stage of the research synthesis process—problem formulation, literature search and evaluation, statistical integration, and report preparation. The Handbook incorporates state-of-the-art techniques from all quantitative synthesis traditions and distills a vast literature to explain the most effective solutions to the problems of quantitative data integration. Among the statistical issues addressed are the synthesis of non-independent data sets, fixed and random effects methods, the performance of sensitivity analyses and model assessments, the development of machine-based abstract screening, the increased use of meta-regression and the problems of missing data. The Handbook also addresses the non-statistical aspects of research synthesis, including searching the literature and developing schemes for gathering information from study reports. Those engaged in research synthesis will find useful advice on how tables, graphs, and narration can foster communication of the results of research syntheses. The third edition of the Handbook provides comprehensive instruction in the skills necessary to conduct research syntheses and represents the premier text on research synthesis. Praise for the first edition: "The Handbook is a comprehensive treatment of literature synthesis and provides practical advice for anyone deep in the throes of, just teetering on the brink of, or attempting to decipher a meta-analysis. Given the expanding application and importance of literature synthesis, understanding both its strengths and weaknesses is essential for its practitioners and consumers. This volume is a good beginning for those who wish to gain that understanding." —Chance "Meta-analysis, as the statistical analysis of a large collection of results from individual studies is called, has now achieved a status of respectability in medicine. This respectability, when combined with the slight hint of mystique that sometimes surrounds meta-analysis, ensures that results of studies that use it are treated with the respect they deserve....The Handbook of Research Synthesis is one of the most important publications in this subject both as a definitive reference book and a practical manual."—British Medical Journal When the first edition of The Handbook of Research Synthesis was published in 1994, it quickly became the definitive reference for researchers conducting meta-analyses of existing research in both the social and biological sciences. In this fully revised second edition, editors Harris Cooper, Larry Hedges, and Jeff Valentine present updated versions of the Handbook's classic chapters, as well as entirely new sections reporting on the most recent, cutting-edge developments in the field. Research synthesis is the practice of systematically distilling and integrating data from a variety of sources in order to draw more reliable conclusions about a given question or topic. The Handbook of Research Synthesis and Meta-Analysis draws upon years of groundbreaking advances that have transformed research synthesis from a narrative craft into an important scientific process in its own right. Cooper, Hedges, and Valentine have assembled leading authorities in the field to guide the reader through every stage of the research synthesis process—problem formulation, literature search and evaluation, statistical integration, and report preparation. The Handbook of Research Synthesis and Meta-Analysis incorporates state-of-the-art techniques from all quantitative synthesis traditions. Distilling a vast technical literature and many informal sources, the Handbook provides a portfolio of the most effective solutions to the problems of quantitative data integration. Among the statistical issues addressed by the authors are the synthesis of non-independent data sets, fixed and random effects methods, the performance of sensitivity analyses and model assessments, and the problem of missing data. The Handbook of Research Synthesis and Meta-Analysis also provides a rich treatment of the non-statistical aspects of research synthesis. Topics include searching the literature, and developing schemes for gathering information from study reports. Those engaged in research synthesis will also find useful advice on how tables, graphs, and narration can be used to provide the most meaningful communication of the results of research synthesis. In addition, the editors address the potentials and limitations of research synthesis, and its future directions. The past decade has been a period of enormous growth in the field of research synthesis. The second edition Handbook thoroughly revises original chapters to assure that the volume remains the most authoritative source of information for researchers undertaking meta-analysis today. In response to the increasing use of research synthesis in the formation of public policy, the second edition includes a new chapter on both the strengths and limitations of research synthesis in policy debates
