Book The Effects of Habitat on Population Dynamics in an Expanding Population of Grey Seals Halichoerus Grypus on Muskeget Island MA

Download or read book The Effects of Habitat on Population Dynamics in an Expanding Population of Grey Seals Halichoerus Grypus on Muskeget Island MA written by Meagan Sims and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breeding grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) utilize a variety of terrestrial substrates for parturition, nursing, and mating that vary in topographical characteristics and therefore, the availability of suitable habitat is crucial for the persistence of grey seal populations worldwide. This study compared the effects of habitat type over the course of four breeding seasons on Muskeget Island, Massachusetts within and between years on a suite of population parameters including densities, sex ratios, male harem likelihood and mean harem sizes, pups with and without mothers, nursing events, copulation events, pup mortality, and pup developmental stages. The analysis included the 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2012 breeding seasons and compared two beach and three interior habitat types. I predicted that the predominant pupping habitat type used during the breeding season would be exterior beach types because they were composed of expansive, primarily flat substrate representing the first access points when hauling-out. It was expected that these sites would be the locations used by early arriving females and contain higher densities of all age/sex classes. Areas with higher densities were thought to facilitate a greater number of harems with smaller mean harem sizes, fewer pups with mothers, fewer nursing events, more copulation events, higher pup mortality, and more pups in later developmental stages. Overall, densities for all age/sex classes were significantly higher for exterior open beach and thin beach types compared to interior marsh, back beach grass, and inland types, and the use of interior habitats was higher overall in 2012 than in 2007. Sex ratios became more female biased over the course of the study, and were more heavily femaled biased in interior habitat types. Males were more likely to have harems in open beach types while mean harem sizes were significantly larger in interior habitat types, higher in 2012 than 2007, and significantly positively correlated with adult sex ratios in three out of five habitat types. Densely populated exterior sites had more observed copulation events and pup mortality while no differences in nursing events were found. Additionally, a clear shift in habitat use was evident for the 2010 breeding season for all population parameters. Results suggest the primary use of exterior beach habitats during the initial portion of the breeding season, particularly on the north and west sides of Muskeget, with a progression towards interior habitats throughout the season and the use of interior habitat becoming more prevalent over time. As expected, distinct differences in all population parameters were observed for beach vs. interior habitat use, suggesting habitat type plays a considerable role in the population dynamics of breeding grey seals. To date, little is known regarding this breeding population and this study was the first analysis conducted on Muskeget Island to investigate grey seal pupping habitat choice and its potential effects on population dynamics.

Book Population Biology of Grey Seals halichoerus Grypus Fabricius 1791 in Western Ireland

Download or read book Population Biology of Grey Seals halichoerus Grypus Fabricius 1791 in Western Ireland written by Oliver Roger Marieke Kiely and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The population status and biology of grey seals was examined at principal breeding colonies in Ireland. A census of pup production at the Inishkea island group in 1995 and at the Blasket Islands in 1996/97 yielded all-age population estimates of 539-693 and 543-697 animals respectively, which are similar to previous population estimates for this area derived in 1983. Shore abundances were correlated between years and number of seals reached an annual peak during the annual moult. Adult males showed an annual immigration into the Inishkea Group but not to the Blasket Islands. Adult females showed a relatively consistent haul-out patterns through both years of the study. The proportions of males, females and juveniles ashore during the moult season were similar for each study area with males always present in higher numbers. The use of perennial haul-out sites by adult and juvenile grey seals was also examined in a two-year study. A strong effect of season on haul-out abundance was observed for adult females but not for adult males. Complete sex segregation did not occur among adults although a number of sights tended to be used by sex-biased groups. Photographic mark-recapture surveys of grey seals were conducted over a two-year period at three study areas in Ireland and at North Rona in western Scotland. Photo-identification of individual seals using automated pelage matching suggested that seasonal changes in abundance partly resulted from individual changes in site-use. No movements of identified individuals between study areas were detected. Individual recaptures suggested that females may show a level of interannual faithfulness to breeding areas. Population estimates derived from photo-identification data were significantly different from and less reliable than those derived from more traditional census methods.

Book Active Touch Sensing

Download or read book Active Touch Sensing written by Robyn Grant and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Active touch can be described as the control of the position and movement of tactile sensing systems to facilitate information gain. In other words, it is finding out about the world by reaching out and exploring—sensing by ‘touching’ as opposed to ‘being touched’. In this Research Topic (with cross-posting in both Behavioural Neuroscience and Neurorobotics) we welcomed articles from junior researchers on any aspect of active touch. We were especially interested in articles on the behavioral, physiological and neuronal underpinnings of active touch in a range of species (including humans) for submission to Frontiers in Behavioural Neuroscience. We also welcomed articles describing robotic systems with biomimetic or bio-inspired tactile sensing systems for publication in Frontiers in Neurorobotics.

Book Ethology and Behavioral Ecology of Odontocetes

Download or read book Ethology and Behavioral Ecology of Odontocetes written by Bernd Würsig and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concentrates on the marine mammalian group of Odontocetes, the toothed whales, dolphins, and porpoises. In 23 chapters, a total of 40 authors describe general patterns of ethological concepts of odontocetes in their natural environments, with a strong bent towards behavioral ecology. Examples are given of particularly well-studied species and species groups for which enough data exist, especially from the past 15 years. The aim is to give a modern flavor of present knowledge of ethology and behavior of generally large-brained behaviorally flexible mammals that have evolved quite separately from social mammals on land. As well, the plight of populations and species due to humans is described in multiple chapters, with the goal that an understanding of behavior can help to solve or alleviate at least some human-made problems.

Book Micro and macro plastics in marine species from Nordic waters

Download or read book Micro and macro plastics in marine species from Nordic waters written by Inger Lise N. Bråte and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarises the knowledge on plastics in Nordic marine species. Nordic biota interacts with plastic pollution, through entanglement and ingestion. Ingestion has been found in many seabirds and also in stranded mammals. Ingestion of plastics has been documented in 14 fish species, which many of them are of ecology and commercially importance. Microplastics have also been found in blue mussels and preliminary studies found synthetic fibres in marine worms. Comparability between and within studies of plastic ingestion by biota from the Nordic environment and other regions are difficult as there are: few studies and different methods are used. It is important that research is directed towards the knowledge gaps highlighted in this report, to get a better understanding on plastic ingestion and impact on biota from the Nordic marine environment.

Book Addis Ababa Principles and Guidelines for the Sustainable Use of Biodiversity

Download or read book Addis Ababa Principles and Guidelines for the Sustainable Use of Biodiversity written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Addis Ababa principles and guidelines for the sustainable use of biodiversity provide a framework for assisting governments, indigenous and local communities, resource managers, the private sector and other stakeholders, about how to ensure that their uses of biological diversity will not lead to its long-term decline. The practical principles in most instances apply to both consumptive and non-consumptive uses of biodiversity components. They take into account requirements related to policies, laws, and regulations; management of biological diversity; socio-economic conditions; and information, research, and education.
