Book Boys and Girls From George Eliot Classic Reprint

Download or read book Boys and Girls From George Eliot Classic Reprint written by Kate Dickinson Sweetser and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boys and Girls From George Eliot Among the novels of the great English writer, George Eliot (mary Ann Evans), it is the exception to find one which does not contain a pretty picture of child life. And always the children are bright, active, normal children, who even when they have nothing to do with the develop ment of the plot, yet are great additions to the novels from which they are taken, just because they are such true pictures of boys and girls as they exist in everyday life. It is for this reason that they have been thought worthy of being gathered together in a single volume. If the boys and girls who read about them are interested in Tom and Maggie, a true history of George Eliot's youthful experience with the brother only three years older than herself; in Eppie, the weaver's adopted daughter; and in the other children whose pranks and pastimes are here related, - and if they follow up these stories by turning to the books from which they have been taken, then will the volume have served its purpose well; for only as a means to an end, and that end the reading of George Eliot's novels by the young people of to-day, has it been compiled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of George Eliot, Vol. 1 With a single drop of ink for a mirror, the Egyptian sorcerer undertakes to reveal to any chance comer far-reaching visions of the past. This is what I undertake to do for you, reader. With this drop of ink at the end of my pen, I will show you the roomy workshop of Mr. Jonathan Burge, carpenter and builder, in the village of Hayslope, as it appeared on the eighteenth of June, in the year of our Lord 1799. The afternoon sun was warm on the five workmen there, busy upon doors and window-frames and wainscoting. A scent of pine-wood from a tent-like pile of planks outside the open door mingled itself with the scent of the elder-bushes which were spreading their summer snow close to the open window opposite; the slanting sunbeams snone through the transparent shavings that flew before the steady plane, and lit up the fine grain of the oak panelling which stood propped against the wall. Dickens's favorite theme low In the great city of London; Thackeray's, the higher social stratum. Sir Walter gave us a vivid picture of Scotland such as no one else ever attempted, while George Eliot pre ferred the rural life of the lviidlands of Eng land. Here she was thoroughly at home. The daughter of a prosperous land-agent, whose daily life was not above that of the plain country-folk who were his neighbors, she was, throughout her youth, in daily con tact with farmers and their wives, country parsons and dissenting preachers, village doctors and rural schoolmasters, while now and then her father's business connection with several of the wealthiest estates in Eng land gave her an opportunity to visit the most aristocratic homes of the vicinity. Download or read book The Life and Works of George Eliot Vol 17 written by George Eliot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Works of George Eliot, Vol. 17: Poems It must not be supposed that this is by any means a matter of mere fluency, correctness, or ease of numbers. Macaulay wrote verses far su perior in these particulars to many of Mr. Henry Taylor's and many of Wordsworth's. Yet verse was, unequivocally, Macaulay's left-hand; and after adolescence, few people can read his verse for poetry. If I were not unwilling to rouse the prejudice of (i fear!) most of my readers, I should here add Edgar Poe; and, indeed, I really cannot Spare him as an illustration. He must have some queer hybrid place, all to himself (which it would take an essay to define) but though he may be said to have felt verse his right-hand medium of expression, some few of us hesitate to call him a poet. Not to complicate this matter, let us come at once to the point. What is it that in excellent verse differentiates 1 that which is poetry and that which is not? Not mere fluency, but unconscious fluency; in a word, simplicity. Whatever art may do for the poet, he must be a simple musician to begin with.
