Book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans Classic Reprint written by William Sanday and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans The Commentaries will be international and inter-con fessional, and will be free from polemical and ecclesiastical bias. They will be based upon a thorough critical study of the original texts of the Bible, and upon critical methods of interpretation. They are designed chiefly for students and clergymen, and will be written in a compact style. Each book will be preceded by an Introduction, stating the results of criticism upon it, and discussing impartially the questions still remaining open. The details of criticism will appear in their proper place in the body of the Commentary. Each section of the Text will be introduced with a paraphrase, or summary of contents. Technical details of textual and philological criticism will, as a rule, be kept distinct from matter of a more general character; and in the Old Testa ment the exegetical notes will be arranged, as far as possible, so as to be serviceable to students not acquainted with Hebrew. The History of Interpretation of the Books will be dealt with, when necessary, in the Introductions, with critical notices of the most important literature of the subject. Historical and Archaeological questions, as well as questions of Biblical Theology, are included in the plan of the Commentaries, but not Practical or Homiletical Exegesis. The Volumes will constitute a uniform series. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary: On the Epistles to the Ephesians and to the Colossians The following Commentary is primarily philological. Its aim is to ascertain with as great precision as possible the actual meaning of the writer's language. The Commentaries which have been regularly consulted are those of Chrysostom and Theodore of Mopsuestia, amongst the ancients; and amongst the moderns, Alford, Barry, De Wette, Eadie, Ellicott, Meyer (W. Schmidt), Moule, von Soden, and the Speaker's; also for Ephesians, Harless, Stier, and Macpherson; and for Colossians, Lightfoot The Commentary of von Soden, though concise, is very acute and independent. Mr. Moule's also, although bearing a modest title, is of great value. Other writers have been occasionally consulted. Much use has been made of Fritzsche's occasional notes in his various commentaries, especially in connexion with the illustration of the language of the Epistles from classical and late Greek authors. Wetstein, of course, has not been overlooked. The text adopted is that of the Revisers, except where otherwise stated. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans This Commentary on Paul's Epistle to the Romans was written at the request of the Board of Publication whose imprint it bears. It was the desire of the board, as expressed by Dr. W. J. Darby, that I should base my work on the King James version of the epistle, and that it should little exceed a hundred thousand words, being only a handy commentary intended chiefly for those readers who, in all Churches, will ever be the majority. And yet it is hoped that the volume may not be without value to many ministers of the gospel, who may not often have opportunity to study those works which deal at greater length with questions of critical detail. Not only, however, was the previous intellectual prepara tion on the part of the reader for commentary study to be taken into consideration, but his purse as well; for if the book had been much larger it would also have cost much more, and hence while it might have done a greater good to the few, it would have done less to the many. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Exegetical: Hand-Book to the Epistle to the Romans The design of the publishers of the present edition of Meyer's work is to place it within the reach Of the largest possible numberof theo logical students and ministers, in order that the influence of its profound scholarship, its true methods, its honest truth-seeking purpose, its relig ious spirit and its manly confidence in Christianity may be most widely extended. The. Commentary is printed in full and precise accordance with the English Translation - except that, in many instances, references to authorities and to Greek writers are transferred from the page to foot notes - and by an arrangement with the English publishers. The translation of this volume was made, as indicated on the title-page, by the Rev. John C. Moore and the Rev. Edwin Johnson; the work of the former covering the first eight chapters, and that of the latter the remainder of the Epistle. The translation, it is believed, has com mended itself to those who have used it since its first publication. The Rev. Dr. William P. Dickson, of the University of Glasgow, was the superintending editor of the work when this portion of it was pre pared, and the entire translation, so long as his editorship continued, was reviewed and revised by him. As the Commentary on the Romans was the first of the series which was published, Dr. Dickson introduced it by a General Preface. This preface it has been thought proper to omit in this edition, inasmuch as the principal facts connected with Meyer's life, which it contained, have been already stated in the volume on the Acts, edited by Dr. Ormiston, andbecause the Commentary is now so much better known than when it was first issued in Edinburgh, that such introductory words seem to be scarcely necessary. The Topical Index at the end Of the volume has been prepared by the Rev. G. F. Behringer, of Brooklyn, N. Y., who has kindly exercised a general supervision of the work, while'passing through the press. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle to the Romans, in Greek and English: With an Analysis and Exegetical Commentary Tnus far the Apostle has conducted his argument with a view to the unde niable fact that both Gentiles and Jews have flagrantly broken God's moral law, and consequently that justification on the ground of obedience thereto is precluded. And it is the moral law to which generally in the argumentative part of the Epistle he refers. But this is not invariably the case. The Jews attached an undue estimate to their ceremonial and ritual law, and. Especially to the initiatory rite of circumcision. And as this institution originated in the person of Abraham, their great ancestor, and fi'om him had been perpetuated in his descendants through Isaac and Jacob to their own times, their connection by this covenant rite with the distinguished patriarch had become the occasion of extraordinary self confidence. This ecclesiastical and national pride had been rebuked by John the Baptist but weakness and vanity often inseparable associates. Book excerpt: For over one hundred years, the International Critical Commentary series has held a special place among works on the Bible. It has sought to bring together all the relevant aids to exegesis - linguistic and textual no less than archaeological, historical, literary and theological-with a level of comprehension and quality of scholarship unmatched by any other series. No attempt has been made to secure a uniform theological or critical approach to the biblical text: contributors have been invited for their scholarly distinction, not for their adherence to any one school of thought. The first paperback editions to be published cover the heart of the New Testament, providing a wealth of information and research in accessible and attractive format.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Epistle to the Romans When Paul and the other apostles were called to enter upon their important duties, the world was in a deplorable and yet most interesting state. Both Heathenism and Judaism were in the last stages of decay. The polytheism of the Greeks and Romans had been carried to such an extent as to shock the common sense of mankind, and to lead the more intelligent among them openly to reject and ridicule it. This scepticism had already extended itself to the mass of the people, and become almost universal. As the transition from infidelity to superstition is certain, and generally immediate, all classes of the people were disposed to confide in dreams, enchantments, and other miserable substitutes for religion. The two reigning systems of philosophy, the Stoic and Platonic, were alike insufficient to satisfy the agitated minds of men. The former sternly repressed the best natural feelings of the soul, inculcating nothing but a blind resignation to the unalterable course of things, and promising nothing beyond an unconscious existence hereafter. The latter regarded all religions as but different forms of expressing the same general truths, and represented the whole mythological system as an allegory, as incomprehensible to the common people as the pages of a book to those who cannot read. This system promised more than it could accomplish. It excited feelings which it could not satisfy, and thus contributed to produce that general ferment which existed at this period. Among the Jews, generally, the state of things was hardly much better. They had, indeed, the form of true religion, but were in a great measure destitute of its spirit. The Pharisees were contented with the form; the Sadducees were sceptics; the Essenes were enthusiasts and mystics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The International Critical Commentary: A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians I had hoped that in my present position this diversion of time and attention would prove less exacting; but the very Opposite has been the case. Accordingly my task in preparing for publication the work of past years upon the Epistle has suffered from sad lack of continuity, and has not, with the exception of a few sections, been carried beyond its earlier chapters. That the Commentary appears, when it does and as it does, is due to the extraordinary kindness of my old friend, tutor at Oxford, and colleague at Durham, Dr. Plummer. His generous patience as Editor is beyond any recognition I can express: he has, moreover, supplied my shortcomings by taking upon his shoulders the greater part of the work. Of the Introduction, also, he has written important sections; the Index is entirely his work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
