Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key component of social life, discourse mediates the processes of class formation and social conflict. Drawing on dialogic theory and building on the work of E. P. Thompson, Marc W. Steinberg argues for the importance of incorporating discursive analysis into the historical reconstruction of class experience. Amending models of collective action, he offers new insights on how discourse shapes the dynamics of popular protest. To support his thesis, he presents studies of two English trade groups in the 1820s: cotton spinners from Lancashire factory towns and London silk weavers. For each case, Steinberg closely examines the labor process, industrial organization, social life, community politics, discursive struggles, and collective actions. By describing how workers shared experiences of exploitation and oppression in their daily lives, he shows how discourses of contention were products of struggle and how they framed possibilities for collective action. Embracing work in literary theory, sociocultural psychology, and cultural studies, Fighting Words claims a middle ground between postmodern and materialist analyses.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course of Lectures on the Steam Engine: Delivered Before the Members of the London Mechanics' Institution Mr. Partington introduced the important subjects, which he was about to illustrate, by observing, That as it is an undeniable truth, that the length of our existence bears but a very smallproportion to the knowledge which science has to bestow, it is both an useful and an honour able office to give the benefits of long-tried experience, and the results of. The most painful labours, in as brief and po pular a fiorm as may be consistent with perspicuity and truth. Even to read the history and principles of any branch of science, and ull its members are essential portions of an enlightened education, is a work which few possess the time or inclination to efl'ect. Add to this, too, that the perusal of such works as induct us to the study of Natural Philosophy, requires much and careful examination so that the mind soon flags - our attention soon becomes be wildered - the references which are intended to explain, frequently confound - and for want of actual expel-imcnt, the established truths of science, and the wonderful com binations of art, are too frequently unintelligible. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Lectures on the Steam Engine, in Which Its Construction and Operation Are Familiarly Explained: With an Historical Sketch of Its Invention and Progressive Improvement In preparing an edition of the Rev. Dr. Lardner's Popular Lectures on the Steam-Engine for publication, a few additions have been considered necessary. These consist principally in descriptions of such improvements in the Steam-Engine as have been made in this country, or such notices as may render the work more useful to the American reader. They are embodied in the work in such places as appear fitted to receive them. They may be distinguished from the original paragraphs of the text from their being marked by letters instead of numbers, and their having the initials A. E. subscribed to each of them. Among these additions will be found a more full explanation of the application of the Steam-Engine to railways than is contained in the original; and an account (accompanied by a plate) of the very simple form of the high-pressure engine as it is now constructed in this City. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steam-Engine: Being a Popular Description of the Construction and Action of the Engine; With a Sketch of Its History, and of the Laws of Heat and Pneumatics There is a mixture of truth and exaggeration in the above quotation, which would be very apt to mislead one who is not precisely aware Of what DE caus had effected, and what had been done previously by others. It is true that DE caus was the first to propose the application of steam to raise water on the large scale.
