Allowance was made for needful drill in preliminary work and for the care and storage of materials and utensils customary at the close of the year. Designed primarily for beginners, these lessons have, through a teaching experience of several years, proved satisfactory in grammar, secondary, and higher classes. The theoretical portion was condensed, expanded, simplified, or omitted, and the order of lessons changed according to special needs. It has seemed advisable to include in the present course only simple experiments which can be performed with utensils to be found in an ordinary school kitchen, since excellent laboratory manuals are published for students of domestic science, and opportunity for experimental work varies in different schools. Book Household Arts for Home and School Vol 2

Download or read book Household Arts for Home and School Vol 2 written by Anna M. Cooley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Household Arts for Home and School, Vol. 2: Care of the Home Cooking and Serving Selection of Food Laundering Hospitality Introduction and mending one hour each week, because they had learned at school how much time is needed for this work and how hard it is to do everything alone. This book will tell you how the girls helped Miss Ashley to keep the Sunnyside apartment clean; about the food they learned to buy, cook, and serve; about the parties and other good times they had; and about what they did at home to help their mothers. Everybody at the Ellen H. Richards School believes that a girl should make use of what she learns at school in her home, and it used to be great fun for the girls to compare notes to see which of them practiced what they said they believed. They took great pride in doing some special work on Saturdays and Sundays, and their mothers were quite surprised at times by what they did. Their great interest in their work was due no doubt to the fact that they helped to decide what they should do in their home-making classes. After the girls had arranged the new kitchen Miss Ashley surprised them very much one morning by asking, What would you like to do in this nice new laboratory and at Sunnyside this year? They never before had had any choice in their school work and did not know just what to say, so Miss Ashley told them to talk it over among themselves and with their mothers, and hand in a report next time. The girls stood on the corner a long time trying to think out some good answers to the question and finally decided to meet at Dorothy Vincent's home after school and make some plans. If it is to be a home-making course I suppose we should learn to do those things that we are asked to do at home, said' Edith Potter. Mother thinks that I might help more than I do, but she always wants me to wash the dishes and I hate dishwashing. Book Shelter and Clothing

Download or read book Shelter and Clothing written by Helen Kinne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shelter and Clothing: A Textbook of the Household Arts This book and the companion volume, Foods and Household Management by the same authors, are intended for the girl pursuing any type of high school or normal school course, as well as for the home maker. They cover the course in household arts for the general high school. The authors feel that household arts in high schools should not be confined to problems in cooking and sewing. They are only a part of the study of home making. The questions of home organization, management, care, repair, home sanitation, and decoration, are also important, and should find a place in the household arts course of study in every high school. The question of what to include in a general textbook has been a difficult one for the authors to answer because of the scope of the field of household arts. It has been planned so as to give the most helpful suggestions in relation to each subject. This book deals with the home, its ideals in organization, its sanitation, decoration, and furnishing; also with the questions of textiles, sewing, and dressmaking. Foods and Household Management treats of the study of foods, their manufacture, composition, preparation, and serving, and the home problems of management, accounts, buying, housewifery, care and repair of household furnishings. Among the early tribes, the chieftain was Often the only one to have a fire in his home. The hearthstone thus became the center of the home life, the. Abode of the household gods, and even at the present time it is impossible for some persons to sep arate the spirit of the home from the kitchen fire. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foods and Household Management: A Textbook of the Household Arts This volume, like its companion, Shelter and Clothing, is intended for use in the course in household arts in the high school and normal school, whether the work be vocational or general in its aim. It is hoped that both volumes will prove useful in the home as well, including as they do a treatment of the homecrafts, and the related topics now so significant to the home maker, - the cost and purchasing of foods and clothing, the cost of operating, the management of the home, and questions of state and city sanitation vital to the health of the individual family. The volume treats specifically of foods, their production, sanitation, cost, nutritive value, preparation, and serving, these topics being closely interwoven with the practical aspects of household management, and they are followed by a study of the household budget and accounts, methods of buying, housewifery, and laundering. It includes about 160 carefully selected and tested recipes, together with a large number of cooking exercises of a more experimental nature designed to develop initiative and resourcefulness. Shelter and Clothing deals with the organization and ideals of the home, house sanitation, decoration, and furnishing; and treats in full, textiles, sewing, costume design, and dressmaking. Some of the recipes here given are adapted from those of such authorities as Mrs. Lincoln, Miss Farmer, and Miss Barrows, and others are original and from private sources.
