Catholicism has always had a universal claim, but the globalization of Catholicism as a truly "world church" became part of Catholic theology only thanks to that gathering—decided by St. John XXIII—of bishops, theologians, lay observers, ecumenical representatives, and journalists. Vatican II is the most important event in church history after the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, and it is the key to understanding Catholicism and its inner tensions today.

Book A Council That Will Never End

Download or read book A Council That Will Never End written by Paul Lakeland and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2013-09-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lumen Gentium, Vatican II's Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, changed how the church thinks about the laity, holiness, baptism, and even the nature and purpose of the church itself. In A Council That Will Never End, the highly regarded ecclesiologist Paul Lakeland marks the fiftieth anniversary of this document's promulgation by taking up three major themes of the constitution, analyzing the text, and identifying some of the questions with which it leaves us. These themes are the role of the bishop in the church and the ways Lumen Gentium's teaching relates to various tensions in today's church the laity and in particular the mixed blessing of describing them in the category of "secularity" and the relationships between the church and the people of God and what they tell us about the ways in which all people are offered salvation. Lakeland is convinced that Lumen Gentium leaves much unfinished business (as any historical document must), that attending to it will take us beyond much of the now sterile ecclesial divisions, and that the ecclesiology of humility it implies marks the way that theology must guide the church in the years ahead.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of globalization evokes either euphoria or alarm. Some view it as an unmistakable sign of progress, while others see it as a threat. Nevertheless, the accelerated development of economic, scientific, political and social links among all the peoples of the world has turned our planet into a megalopolis replete with slums. In this work, Archbishop Anastasios presents his conviction that the ecumenical vision of the Orthodox Church is the "best response" to the growing global condition. In the Orthodox tradition, everything is understood within a universal context, from the creation of the world to the vision of the new heaven and new earth. Human enterprise as a whole and the salvation of the entire world are seen as the basic themes of Holy Scripture. In this work, Archbishop Anastasios discusses Orthodox perspectives on human rights, the dialogue with Islam, and the relationship between culture and the gospel, and provides an analysis of world religions. His words invite us to broaden our field of vision to encompass the whole earth.

Download or read book Keys to the Council written by Richard R. Gaillardetz and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the church marks the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council, too few Catholics have an adequate grasp of what the council contributed to the life of the church. The problem is understandable. The Second Vatican Council produced, by far, more document pages than any other council. Consequently, any attempt to master its core teachings can be daunting. There is a danger of missing the forest for the trees. With this in mind, Keys to the Council identifies twenty key conciliar passages, central texts that help us appreciate the Vision of the council fathers. Each chapter places the given passage in its larger historical context, explores its fundamental meaning and significance, and finally considers its larger significance for the life of the church today. Chapters include exploration of Sacrosanctum Concilium's demand for full, conscious, and active participation in the liturgy; Lumen Gentium's eucharistic ecclesiology; Gaudium et Spes's vision of marriage as an intimate partnership of life and love; Nostra Aetate's approach to non-Christian religions; and more.

Book Vatican II

    Book Details:

  • Publisher : Paulist Press
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 1616430893
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Vatican II written by Massimo Faggioli and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The death of John Paul II and the election of Benedict XVI constituted two important elements in the broad theological and cultural landscape of Catholicism. This change of pontificate has also nourished the journalistic and political dispute about Vatican II, its history and its legacy, and not only the historiographical and theological debate. But the research on Vatican II is already proceeding forward and beyond the state of knowledge about the Council reached at the end of the 90s. For 21st century Catholics and theologians interested in understanding contemporary Catholicism in the light of Vatican II the intellectual undertaking is far from accomplished yet. The book offers comprehensive presentation of the theological and historiographical debate about Council Vatican II. The attempt to go beyond "the clash of interpretations" - Vatican II as a rupture in the history of Catholicism on one side, the need to read Vatican II in continuity with the tradition on the other - is necessary indeed because the ongoing debate about Vatican II is largely misrepresented by the use of "clashing interpretations" as a tool for understanding the role of the council in present-day Catholicism.

InWithout Oars, Wesley Granberg-Michaelson blends history, storytelling, biblical insights, personal reflections, and spiritual formation in an inviting call to discover pilgrimage as a way of life. Book The Global Church The First Eight Centuries

Download or read book The Global Church The First Eight Centuries written by Donald Fairbairn and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the Variety and Unity of the Early Church The Christian church of the early centuries spread throughout much of Asia, Africa, and Europe, spoke many languages, was situated within diverse cultural settings, and had varied worship practices; yet it maintained a vital unity on core teachings at the heart of the Christian faith. In The Global Church--The First Eight Centuries: From Pentecost through the Rise of Islam, author Donald Fairbairn helps readers understand both the variety and unity of the church in this pivotal era by: Re-centering the story of the church in its early centuries, paying greater attention to Africa, Turkey, and Syria, where most of the church's intellectual energy was nurtured Highlighting Christian communities outside the Roman Empire, as far afield as Persia and India, alongside those within it Identifying key events by their global, not merely Western, significance and taking into account early Christian interactions with other religions, particularly Islam The Global Church--The First Eight Centuries is an ideal introduction to the patristic era that broadens the narrative often recounted and places it more firmly in its varied cultural contexts. Students of the early church, formal and informal alike, will appreciate the fresh approach and depth of insight this book provides.
