This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third Uni ted Nations Conference on the Lawof the Sea is preparing rules far the establishment of an international legal regime governing the exploration and exploitation of the resources of the international seabed. The Draft Convention on the Law of the Sea (Informal Text) of 27 August 1980 which has so far been the result of the negotiations during the preceding sessions of the Conference, provides for a so-called "parallel system" under which an international "Enterprise" as weIl as national private or state-owned companies will be granted access to the resources of the international seabed under the control of an International Seabed Authority. The Draft Convention also envisages the condusion of joint venture agreements between the international Enterprise and national companies or consortia, and encourages such cooperation through grant ing various incentives. Such joint ventures will probably play an important part in making the international Enterprise operative in the early years of its existence. At the Conference concerns have been expressed whether and when the Enterprise as a newcomer would be in a position to start seabed mining and to compete effectively with the national companies. The Draft Convention provides for a number of ways and means to enable the Enterprise to develop its technological and financial capabilities for deep sea mining as early as possible.

Book International Law and Ocean Use Management

Download or read book International Law and Ocean Use Management written by Lawrence Juda and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book places contemporary problems of ocean use management in historical context beginning with the time of Hugo Grotius, whose seminal 1609 work The Freedom of the Seas was the basis of ocean law for the next three centuries. Individual use problems are dealt with in detail and include overfishing, migrating fish stocks and fish wars, oil drilling, deep sea mining and marine pollution. Throughout the author notes the need to seek solutions in ocean management from a more integrated perspective. Book Deep Seabed Mining in the Indian Ocean Economic and Strategic Dimensions

Download or read book Deep Seabed Mining in the Indian Ocean Economic and Strategic Dimensions written by Commander (Dr) Nitin Agarwala and published by National Maritime Foundation. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book looks at the need of minerals for humanity, how and what the oceans offer as minerals in general, the technological developments achieved and the insight into future technologies and designs in this field before finally focusing on the mineral wealth of the Indian Ocean. It eventually poses some tough questions that need answers if deep seabed mining is to become a success in the future. In addition, it discusses the efforts of the key players in this field operating in the Indian ocean that has rejuvenated the deep seabed mining both economically and strategically. Since, commercial profitability of marine minerals occurs only if the demand is greater than the supply, at times, the decision gets governed by strategic reasoning. Hence, the book aims to give an idea of the driving forces that guide such decision-making and the development of deep seabed mining.

Book Japan And The New Ocean Regime

Download or read book Japan And The New Ocean Regime written by Robert L. Friedheim and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The regime under which humankind has governed its uses of the ocean is in the process of change—shifting away from the traditional freedom of the seas toward a “mixed†system in which most of the valuable near-shore resources come under coastal jurisdiction. The transition to a new regime has been difficult for many states, most notably Japan, whose rights to use the entire ocean were well protected by the traditional regime. Japan’s response to the need to develop a modern ocean policy— to adapt to the emerging ocean management regime—is the subject of this multiauthor volume. U.S. and Japanese scholars look at what Japan is doing, how, and with what results. They first assess general trends in ocean management, then examine the role of Japan in the international political economy of the oceans, and finally look at Japan’s ocean policy in various sectors: shipbuilding, fisheries, mineral resources, offshore petroleum, and nuclear power generation. Given Japan’s importance in ocean affairs, the authors point out that the lessons that can be learned from its experience are of prime international importance.
