This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, language: English, abstract: In the thesis at hand, a special emphasis will be on Turkish English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ errors and their difficulties when learning English as a second language. Further, it will provide interpretative approaches regarding the reasons for this. The errors that will be analyzed are subject-verb-agreement errors in different subcategories in Turkish EFL students’ writings in the form of argumentative essays. Furthermore, the essays are analyzed for incorrect verb phrases because of missing verbs, which could be due to the different sentence structures in English and Turkish. The aim is to conduct a corpus-based error analysis in order to investigate and answer two main questions. The first question is, if Turkish EFL students are having difficulties in applying the rules in their essays. The second question deals with the analysis of the error sources to be able to interpret them in order to provide pedagogical implications towards them.

Book A Corpus Based Study on the Preposition Error Types in Turkish EFL Learners Essays

Download or read book A Corpus Based Study on the Preposition Error Types in Turkish EFL Learners Essays written by Mehmet Tunaz and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the categories of preposition errors made by EFL learners of elementary and intermediate proficiency levels by comparing the rate of preposition errors (addition, omission, substitution) to their total preposition uses in their essays, and by comparing the overall preposition usage of learners of both proficiency levels. The study was conducted with 75 learners of elementary level (A2) and 75 learners of intermediate level at Erciyes University School of Foreign Languages. Initially, 550 elementary and 230 intermediate level essays were scanned, and 75 exam papers for each group were randomly chosen as the sample of the research. In the analysis, depending on Grammar of Spoken and Written English of Biber et al. (1999), total preposition numbers and erroneous preposition uses in each essay were counted and color coded by the researchers by blind-checking the papers separately to assure the reliability. Then, the erroneous prepositions were subcategorized as addition, omission and substitution according to Corder's (1973) Common Errors in English and Categorization of Error Types. The results of the independent-sample t-test indicated that; a) there was no difference between groups in terms of addition type error; b) learners of elementary level made statistically more omission type errors than learners of intermediate learners; c) learners of intermediate level made statistically more substitution type errors than learners of elementary level; d) percentages of preposition errors to total preposition usage in elementary level essays were statistically higher than those of intermediate level. In the light of the findings of this research, the importance of teaching preposition in chunks for elementary level, and providing learners of intermediate level with more detailed linguistic features of preposition were emphasized.

Download or read book Error Analysis in New Language Acquisition written by Andrea Letzel and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Anglistik - Linguistik, Note: 1,3, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Error Analysis, used in second language analysis, studies the errors learners make in speech and writing. It also studies the different types of errors and why they were made. In this term paper two different types of learners will be considered who perform spontaneously with the help of a picture story. There will be a special focus on the differences and similarities of their errors. There are various possibilities how samples of learner language can be influenced: Firstly, the learner and his proficiency level have to be described and it is important if he speaks or learns other languages irrespective of the MT and the target language that is considered in the analysis. The way of instruction plays also an important role because instructed language learning provides a different error background as if the learner tries to learn the language naturalistically. The second part that has to be described is the language itself. The medium can either be oral or written. Generally, the oral production consist of a more colloquial English for the simple reason that the learner has not as much time to think about formulation than in written speech. Therefore, the Genre and the content of the language production is Error Evaluation and Error correction are additional parts that have not to be included in every Error Analysis. According to the dictionary of Linguistics the error analysis is subdivided and classified in modality, levels of linguistic description, form, type and cause.

Book Pattern Grammar

Download or read book Pattern Grammar written by Susan Hunston and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes an approach to lexis and grammar based on the concept of phraseology and of language patterning arising from work on large corpora. The notion of 'pattern' as a systematic way of dealing with the interface between lexis and grammar was used in Collins Cobuild English Dictionary (1995) and in the two books in the Collins Cobuild Grammar Patterns series (1996; 1998). This volume describes the research that led to these publications, and explores the theoretical and practical implications of the research. The first chapter sets the work in the context of work on phraseology. The next two chapters give several examples of patterns and how they are identified. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss and exemplify the association of pattern and meaning. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 relate the concept of pattern to traditional approaches to grammar and to discourse. Chapter 9 summarizes the book and adds to the theoretical discussion, as well as indicating the applications of this approach to language teaching. The volume is intended to contribute to the current debate concerning how corpora challenge existing linguistic theories, and as such will be of interest to researchers in the fields of grammar, lexis, discourse and corpus linguistics. It is written in an accessible style, however, and will be equally suitable for students taking courses in those areas.
