Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1825 edition. Excerpt: ...est, Cels. 1.3: ego id respondeo, quod animadverti, Cic. Amic. 2. However numerous such instances may be, yet they are so few when compared with the others, where the accusative and infinitive are used, that they cannot be considered of moment, and are a proof that the ancients preferred the other usage. b) Dico, scribo &c., when they include the notion of command, will, desire, do not belong to this place, siuce they must then be followed by ut; e. g. pater dixit mihi, ut ad se venirem: scripsi ei, ut festinaret, I have written to him that he should hasten &c.: so, nuntiavit ei, ut veniret: nuntius venit, ut rediret &c. c) Exceptions from these general usages occur in the ancients: e. g. we find adde quod, add thereto, that, i. e. further; e.g. Ovid. Pont. 2. 9. 47: 4. 11. 21: 4. 14. 45; where, in fact, the sense of adde requires an accusative with an infinitive. So we often find accedit ut, hereto there is added that, e. g. Cic. Or. 2. 48: Liv. 1. 49: Caes. B. G. 3. 13, where, usually, quod occurs; e. g. Cic. Harusp. 3. So we find ut after certum est, Cic. Att. 10. 4, nihil esse certius, quam ut omnes--restituerentur, for restitutum iri: so also after verum est, verisimile est; e. g. Nep. Hann. 1, si verum est, quod nemo dubitat, ut populus Romanus--superarit, if it be true, that the Roman people &c., for populum Romanum--superasse: Cic. Rose. Am. 41, non verisimile est ut Chrysogonus hortim literas adamant, it is not probable, that &c., for Chrysogonum--adamasse; unless, perhaps, ut be translated how, how Chrysogonus &c.; yet this is unnecessary: Cic. Verr. 4.6, verisimile non est, ut ille homo locuples--religioni suae--pecuniam anteponeret, for illum hominem--anteposuisse. Yet here, though it is unnecessary, ut...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Copious Latin Grammar, Vol. 1 of 2: With Alterations, Notes and Additions It has been necessary to make many alterations of the original, to accommodate it to the difference between the German and English languages. But these are not the only changes. The Author's style is exceedingly heavy and from a strange suppo sition that a work of this kind could be put into the hands of beginners, he often enters into super fluons and tiresome repetitions as, therefore, this is not a work ofimagination or taste, the style has been freely re-modelled, and all those parts which seemed useless have been suppressed the transla tion, though still long, has been thus reduced by as many as a hundred pages. For the same reason the Author's Prefaces have been omitted, as they merely contain remarks upon the necessity of clearly explaining the principles and terms of Gram mar, and its object and extent, which are repeated in the bod y of the work. The Index has also been retrenched of all those particulars which could as well be learnt from the table of Contents. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Copious Latin Grammar, Vol. 1 of 2: With Alterations, Notes and Additions The following Translation, whatever may be its merits or defects, has arisen from the desire of being useful. The Translator, in common with many other teachers, often found the want of a copious Grammar to which he might refer advanced students. The Port-Royal Latin Grammar, which is generally used for this purpose, though in many respects excellent, is also as frequently and greatly defective, particularly in the arrangement and illustration of the Syntax. From the Preface to Matthiæ's valuable Greek Grammar, the Translator became acquainted with Scheller's Latin Grammar, as the model by which the former was executed. Upon procuring and examining it, he was persuaded that it was calculated to remove a great deficiency, and therefore induced to attempt the translation. Book The Eton Latin Grammar

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eton Latin Grammar: With the Addition of Many Useful Notes and Observations, and Also of the Accents and Quantity; Together With an Entirely New Version of All the Latin Rules and ExamplesThis Work consists: of the common Eton Text, with very slight alterations in four or five places only; but with the addition of accent: on all English words of more than one syllable; and of the quantities of the several syllables of all the Latin words; and also of the acute accent on the syllable to be accented in every Latin word of more than one syllable. The vast utility of this plan can never be so fairly appreciated as by comparing the pronunciation of boys in schools where this Grammar is used, with the pronunciation of boys in schools where it is not used: and by viewing at the same time the diminution of labour to persons engaged in tuition, and also the satisfaction they must feel, at the accuracy, and accelerated progress, of their pupils.Independent of the improvements just named, the common Eton text is rendered clearer than heretofore, by the method Of printing the Latin, and by the amplification of the English Of several of the words. The Notes, appended to the Text, are of the most useful description, being selections from the best authors of antiquity condensed into as few words as possible, yet always preserving a lucidity. The same plan of marking the accents and quantities is pursued in the Notes as in the Text.Again, in the present Work, the Construiu g is entirely new, -the genitive case of the several nouns, and, when anomalous, sometimes even other cases, being given with whatever else appeared to me to be calculated to render the Latin more intelligible, and the whole more profitable to learners, than the old mode of translating the Rules and Examples could render it.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
