Book A Study of English Words Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Study of English Words Classic Reprint written by Jessie MacMillan Anderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Study of English Words is a study of the growth of the English language. Anderson's book is not a dictionary or an examination of grammatical principles, but rather a detailed examination of the English language and the changes it had undergone as of the late nineteenth century. The book opens with a chapter on the defining principals of language development in which Anderson outlines his belief in the importance of etymology. The book then proceeds to examine the major changes that English words have undergone, focusing primarily on the external influences that have caused these changes. Individual chapters are devoted to Greek, Latin, and French elements in English, the artist's and scientist's use of words, the ever expanding list of synonyms for English words, and several other topics. While the author states in his preface that the book is intended as a textbook, A Study of English Words is surprisingly devoid of any review questions. Anderson's book is a thorough and competent examination of the growth of the English language. The author has appropriately identified the major forces that influence change in the language, and has effectively highlighted these changes. While the book can seem dry at times, Anderson's concise language ensures the major teaching points are never obstructed. A Study of English Words is a book that will appeal to the true English-language enthusiast. Those fascinated by the development of language will find this to be an informative and worthwhile read. Book Inductive French Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book Inductive French Grammar Classic Reprint written by William Whitfield Lamb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inductive French Grammar Exercise (a) consists of a large number of detached sentences, illustrating the idioms and constructions of the current lesson, with much review matter, either separately or in combination with topics presented in the current lesson. Exercise (b) is a drill on current and review idioms and construo tions in the form of connected discourse. Exercise (c) consists of questions in French, based on exercise (b). Exercise (d) consists of a wide variety of drill material. It is not expected that all of it will be used, but that selections will be made therefrom, according to the needs of the class and the time that can be afforded. A typical assignment covering exercise (d) might be: Write out 3, 7, and 8. Boys write out also 4 (a) and (b). Girls write out 4 (e) and (g). Study without writing 2 and 6. Omit the remainder. Exercise (e) consists of a large number of detached English sen tenoes for translation into French. Teachers will find that their classes can do more of these sentences for a lesson than would at first seem possible, because of the predominance therein of the element of review. Every fifth lesson is a review lesson, each of these ending with a passage of connected English for translation into French. While no suggestions need be offered as to the thoroughness with which these shall be done, it is assumed that they will be done pretty thoroughly, particularly when a review lesson happens to coincide with the close of a term. Book Beginning Latin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginning Latin: An Introduction, by Way of English, to the Latin Language Why American Boys and Girls Should Study Latin. The study of Latin is an intensive study of English. Besides its impor tance for a mastery of French, Spanish, and Italian, the study of Latin fosters habits of persistence, thoroughness, and accuracy; it cultivates the power to understand the thoughts of others and to express one's own. Translating is labors tory work in literature, admirable exercise in expression, ih suring steadily increasing power in the use of a varied and rich vocabulary as the great authors, Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil, are successively read. This Book Emphasizes the Relation of Latin to English. The value most nearly at hand in studying Latin and the most practical of all reasons for its study is the help given by Latin in understanding and using the English language. This book, therefore, lays special emphasis upon the relation of Latin to English. Related English words, with the Latin element typo graphically emphasized, are placed in the vocabularies, beside the Latin. Thus familiar and unfamiliar English words are illuminated by the Latin. S. Fischer, of which the following 1s a translation, has been much used and highly approved in the German and French schools. Book Selections for French Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selections for French Composition Classic Reprint written by Charles Hall Grandgent and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-13 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections for French Composition This book was written in response to a general demand for an easy but comprehensive manual that could be used both in colleges and in schools. Its leading characteristic, as compared with similar works, is the nature of the English texts, which though I have tried to make them sufficiently idiomatic - are all so constructed that, when translated, they will be real French, and not English written with French words. Parts I. And II. Follow the imitative method; the others are taken from French sources. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Teaching and Cultivation of the French Language in England During Tudor and Stuart Times

Download or read book The Teaching and Cultivation of the French Language in England During Tudor and Stuart Times written by Kathleen Lambley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching and Cultivation of the French Language in England During Tudor, and Stuart Times: With an Introductory Chapter on the Preceding Period The present work, begun during the author's tenure of a Faulkner Fellowship in the University of Manchester, and completed in subsequent years, is an endeavour to trace the history of the teaching and use of French in England during a given epoch, ending with the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes and the Revolution of 1689, which events mark the beginning of a new period in the study of the French language in this country. No attempt has been made to treat the wider topic of French influence in England in its literary and social aspects (this has already been done by competent hands), though this side of the question is naturally touched upon occasionally by way of reference or illustration. I gladly take this opportunity of expressing my gratitude to Professor L. E. Kastner, at whose suggestion this investigation was undertaken, for his generous assistance, and the unfailing interest he has shown in my work during the whole course of its preparation. I am likewise considerably indebted to Dr. Phoebe Sheavyn for helpful criticism and advice, to Professor Tout for kindly reading through the introductory chapter, and to Mr. J. Marks for a careful revision of the proofs and many useful indications. I owe a great deal to my father also, whose sympathetic advice and encouragement did much to lighten my task. Nor can I close this list of acknowledgments without recording my obligation to the Secretary of the Press, Mr. H. M. McKechnie, for the valuable assistance he has so freely given me during the progress of this volume through the Press.
