Book Occupying Niches Interculturality Cross culturality and Aculturality in Academic Research

Download or read book Occupying Niches Interculturality Cross culturality and Aculturality in Academic Research written by Andrzej Łyda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of thematically focused articles addressing culture-specific features of academic communication, with a particular focus on communication conducted in English as an Additional Language and directed at multicultural audiences. It comprises papers arranged in four sections: Expert writers, Novice writers and readers, Conference participants, and Non-research academic genres. The book explicitly addresses and is centred upon the concept of a research niche understood as a space to be captured and populated, as a temporary location to move or grow out of in the course of individual professional development from novice to expert, and as a space to consciously reach beyond, delimited by one’s linguistic, cultural, educational, and geopolitical background. Here the niche is approached as a frame of reference for discussion of what is culture-bound, culture-sensitive, and culture-free in the academic community and its practices.

Book Discourse and Social Life

Download or read book Discourse and Social Life written by Srikant Sarangi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together for the first time in a single volume many of the major figures in contemporary discourse studies. Each chapter is an original contribution which has been specifically commissioned for this book, and together they document the wide range of concerns and techniques which characterise the discipline at the turn of the century. Discourse and Social Life is concerned with a variety of different types of data - talk, text and interaction - and covers research sites which range from the home setting through the health care setting and the courtroom to the public sphere. The book not only provides a critical, historical overview of different traditions of discourse analysis, but also projects to some extent the possible developments of this field of study, as other allied disciplines (Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Rhetoric and Communication Studies) are taking a discursive turn. Readers are invited to draw parallels between these different approaches to studying discourse in its social context. The contributors are- Sally Candlin, Malcolm Coulthard, Justine Coupland, Nikolas Coupland, Norman Fairclough, Ruqaiya Hasan, Robert Kaplan, Geoff Leech, Yon Maley, Greg Myers, Celia Roberts, Srikant Sarangi, Ron Scollon, Theo van Leeuwen, Henry Widdowson and Ruth Wodak.

Book A Contrastive Analysis of Rhetorical Patterns in English and Spanish Expository Journal Writing

Download or read book A Contrastive Analysis of Rhetorical Patterns in English and Spanish Expository Journal Writing written by ngel Sánchez-Escobar and published by . This book was released on 2012-10-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prof. Sanchez Escobar's study reflects careful collection and analysis of linguistic data in the most scientifically accurate details. Although the data itself is most interesting, his conclusions really constitute his major contribution to the academic and pedagogical communities. They explain why Spanish speakers learning English have such a difficult time learning the English structure for essays: thesis, supporting points, conclusion, and why English speakers learning Spanish seem to write compositions that are blunt, inelegant, and devoid of the verbal virtuosity so prized by Spanish speakers. Book Contrastive Rhetoric

Download or read book Contrastive Rhetoric written by Nagwa Kassabgy and published by American Univ in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume explore the field of contrastive rhetoric--the study of how a person's first language (L1) and culture influence the acquisition of another language. Contrastive rhetoric encourages inquiry into various levels of discourse and text, examining the conventions and rhetorical structures of L1 and their influence on the use of another language. It also studies the cognitive dimensions of transfer in relation to both writing and speech. The four sections of this volume--focusing on writing and translation, diglossia, second language acquisition, and pragmatics--cover a broad spectrum of studies in the field of contrastive rhetoric, with essays by some of its leading scholars from Cyprus, Egypt, Hong Kong, Jordan, Tunisia, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The collection will be invaluable to language teachers, students of applied linguistics, and anyone interested in second language acquisition and related issues. Book Second Language Writers Text

Download or read book Second Language Writers Text written by Eli Hinkel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive and detailed analysis of second language writers' text identifies explicitly and quantifiably where their text differs from that of native speakers of English. The book is based on the results of a large-scale study of university-level native-speaker and non-native-speaker essays written in response to six prompts. Specifically, the research investigates the frequencies of uses of 68 linguistic (syntactic and lexical) and rhetorical features in essays written by advanced non-native speakers compared with those in the essays of native speakers enrolled in first-year composition courses. The selection of features for inclusion in this analysis is based on their textual functions and meanings, as identified in earlier research on English language grammar and lexis. Such analysis is valuable because it can inform the teaching of grammar and lexis, as well as discourse, and serve as a basis for second language curriculum and course design; and provide valuable insight for second language pedagogical applications of the study's findings.

Book Contrastive Analysis in Language

Download or read book Contrastive Analysis in Language written by D. Willems and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about comparison in linguistics in general, rather than 'contrastive analysis' as a distinct branch of linguistics. It addresses the question 'Does the analytical apparatus used by linguists allow comparisons to be made across languages?' Four major domains are considered in turn: derivational morphology, syntax, semantics & pragmatics, and discourse. Contributions cover a broad spectrum of linguistic disciplines, ranging from contrastive linguistics and linguistic typology to translation studies and historical linguistics.
