Book excerpt: The five works chosen for study are the Konzert fur Violine and Blasorchester (1924), Vom Tod im Wald (1927), Kleine Dreigroschenmusik fur Blasorchester (1928), Berlin im Licht fur Militarorchester (1928), and Das Berliner Requiem (1928). The Violin Concerto was composed at the end of a period of study with Busoni, but does not seem to have been composed under his direct tutelage. Vom Tod im Wald is a setting of Bertolt Brecht poetry and was included as the opening number of Das Berliner Requiem, but later became separated from that work. At the suggestion of conductor Otto Klemperer, Weill rescored music from the popular Die Dreigroschenoper to form a suite of eight movements, the Kleine Dreigroschenmusik. The Berlin im Licht-Song composed for the Berlin im Licht Festival in the Fall of 1928 was hastily arranged for military band by Weill and another arranger. Among the works Weill composed for the Frankfort Radio was Das Berliner Requiem. The composition was the subject of controversy and underwent several changes in movement order. Weill's approach to instrumentation and orchestration demonstrates a preference for certain tone colors, and an emphasis on the clean sound of orchestral scoring. Traditional treatment of forms and melodic material was avoided. Half-step motion played a major role in melodic structure and harmonic progression. The use of semi-tonal sideslip is evident in all the works discussed. In the most harmonically ambiguous works, tonality is sustained by the use of authentic cadences at important points. Considerable harmonic freedom was allowed between these points of tonal polarity. Atonal set sonorities contributed to the obscurity of harmonic orientation. In Weill's concept of gestus he believed that through the use of certain rhythmic, melodic, harmonic and accompaniment figures, concert music, as well as music for the stage, could take on dramatic character. A search for system or method in Weill's music leads to no satisfactory conclusion, but only the observation of purposeful, intuitive skill in composition. Weill's stylistic direction may be described as a kind of neoclassicism. His wind pieces are a valuable part of the contemporary wind ensemble repertory.
