Book A Brief Introduction to Qur anic Exegesis

Download or read book A Brief Introduction to Qur anic Exegesis written by Ali Suleiman Ali and published by International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generating precise comprehension of the Quran and the true meaning of its verses is arguably the essence of the most important of the Islamic sciences, Qur’anic exegesis or tafsÏr. Since the passing of the Prophet many scholars have worked hard to bring a proper understanding of the meaning of the Qur’an to Muslims, and indeed to the world at large, as fully as possible, in an attempt to widen knowledge of the guidance contained therein, and how to live life in accordance with its principles. The result has been a wealth of historical Muslim literature on the subject which has come to be known as Ulum al-Tafsir or the sciences of tafsir, a systematic exegesis of the Qur’an following several methodologies. This work traces the evolution of Qur’anic exegesis, from the time of the Prophet, the Companions, the Successors, the early mufassirun (exegetes) with independent tafsir works, to the present day. In doing so, it addresses some major issues including to what extent has tafsir been influenced by differing theological traditions (classical, mystical sufi, persian), political and sectarian interests etc. and how interpretation has differed in some cases, mainly pertaining to juridical, theological, historical, and linguistic issues. Certain scholars and Qur’anic commentaries have stood the test of time and stand in greater prominence to others. Their works are introduced, and different methodologies compared and critiqued. What we are left with is a broad yet important overview of a subject which otherwise can be too complex and extensive for the ordinary reader to grasp acting as a valuable addition to his/her understanding and study of the Qur’anic text.

Book The Seal to what was Revealed

Download or read book The Seal to what was Revealed written by Hussain Ayad and published by Hussain Ayad. This book was released on 2009 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exegesis of the Qur'an has been a subject of great controversy. Many attempted to attack this topic using various tools at their disposal. Some explained the Qur'an through the traditions narrated from the prophet and those after him and rejected any explanation of the Qur'an by the Qur'an itself, while others used empirical evidence from the natural sciences. Some even tried to fit the verses of the Qur'an to the philosophies of the Greeks and the ancient civilizations which were considered to be advanced. Others tried to say that the Qur'an was known only through a sort of deep, esoteric perfection of the soul. So the Qur'an was betrayed by the people, and progress in the Muslim world was stifled. The minds stagnated and the hearts grew cold as the Qur'an was put to the side. And so many Muslims fell into backwardness, unable to master their own religion due to contradictory ideas on the Qur'an from various groups, and the Muslims failed to properly utilize their holy scripture. It is the goal of this work to introduce the inquisitive mind to the grand science of exegesis by exploring its roots, and explaining its importance. It will argue for the methodology of exegesis in which the Qur'an is used to explain itself, and it will make clear the fallacies of others styles of exegesis. Finally, it will look at the different tools available to the exegete.

Book excerpt: Millions of non-Muslims know the name of the Muslim scripture, whether it is written as "Qur'an" or "Quran" or "Koran." But for most, that is all they know. Many have fallen victim to the mass of misinformation that circulates about the Qur'an. Others may have tried to read the Qur'an, but the text itself is tough to decipher. With no sense of context, chronology, or interpretive history, many would-be readers of the Qur'an quickly give up the effort. As for those trying to find out what the Qur'an says about any particular subject or issue, they, too, soon discover that this is not a simple or straightforward undertaking. A clear, concise introduction to the holy book that guides the lives of 1.6 billion people on our planet, this brief volume opens the world of the Qur'an to interested readers who want to know where this scripture came from and how it has achieved a profound influence in today's world. Where did the Qur'an come from? Do Muslims believe that the Qur'an is God's own word? How do Muslims study the Qur'an? What does the Qur'an say about God? About family? About ethics? About violence? By answering the questions that many people have about the Qur'an and its role in Muslim faith, this book offers an invaluable resource for anyone who is curious about one of the world's most important faiths.

Book Qur anic Exegesis in Classical Literature

Download or read book Qur anic Exegesis in Classical Literature written by Rashīd Aḥmad Jālandharī and published by The Other Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Abu. al-Qāsim al-Qushayrī (b. 376), the author of al-Risāilah (Epistle to the Sufis), one of the earliest manuals of the science of taṣawwuf, was also a mufassir who wrote a complete commentary of the Qurʼan. His work is regarded as the first original mystical commentary written by a man who was both a theologian and a sufi. It is also considered a fusion of both the Sharīʻah and Ṭarīqah, bridging the gap between the ʻulamāʼ and the sufis, during a time when the friction between sufis and traditional ʻulamāʼ was at its peak with both sides accusing each other of deviating from Islam. In studying this historic tafsīr, the author first discusses the science of Qurʼanic exegesis and its development from the earliest days. He discusses briefly the history of early tafsīr works, the various kinds of tafsīrs and their historical and political backgrounds. He also aims to show how sufi scholars have given a new life to the interpretation of the Qur'an."-- Book cover
