Book A Concise Dictionary of Musical Terms

Download or read book A Concise Dictionary of Musical Terms written by Frederick Niecks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise Dictionary of Musical Terms: To Which Is Prefixed an Introduction to the Elements of Music That a few months after the publication of the "Concise Dictionary of Musical Terms" a Second Edition was already called for could not but be gratifying to the Author, and spur him on to improve his work as much as he was able. The Second Edition which I now lay before the public differs from the First by a complementary Appendix, by a few corrections of misprints, and by some additions to and emendations of the original matter. I shall take advantage of this opportunity, and say a word or two about the plan of the work. This explanation of my intention will at the same time serve as a direction to the reader how to use the "Concise Dictionary." My chief endeavour in writing the book was to give the most exact information in the fewest possible words. I prefixed an "Introduction to the Elements of Music" to the "Concise Dictionary" because this enabled me to refer in many short articles to complete expositions of the branches of musical theory in question, and thus to avoid, on the one hand, repetitions and, on the other hand, obscurity and fragmentariness. The length of some articles as compared with that of others may at first sight appear excessive, but, I think, a closer examination will show that the importance of the subjects or the haziness of the knowledge that prevails about them justifies the apparent disproportion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980, Traditions of the Classical Guitar has been described as the first book to examine in detail the many traditions of one of today's most popular instruments. With its central focus on Andres Segovia's pioneering work in establishing the guitar as an international concert instrument, it goes on to examine in detail its subsequent developments with reference to great artists such as Bream, Williams, Diaz and Yepes.Traditions of the Classical Guitar continues to be a classic of twentieth-century guitar scholarship, offering a challenging assessment to perceptions of the guitar's progress throughout the ages. It is also a timely reminder of the glorious years of Segovia's concert career between 1909 and 1987; Segovia himself said of the work: "e;Graham Wade has shown his love for the guitar from the first page to the last; true love and understanding"e;.

Book excerpt: Music in Words is a compact guide to researching and writing about music, addressing all the issues that anyone who writes about music--from students to professional musicians and critics--may confront when putting together anything from brief program notes to a lengthy thesis. The book is a writing guide and a reference manual in one: the first part, a "how to" section, offers a clear explanation of the purpose of music research and how it is to be done, including basic introductions to the most necessary tools for musical inquiry (with special emphasis on strategic use of the internet), and how they can be accessed and used. The second part is a compendium of information on style and sources for quick reference, including a straightforward presentation of the purpose and use of citation and reference systems as they are applied to and in music. As a whole, the volume gives readers a clear picture of how to write about music at different levels and for different purposes in a handy, thoroughly cross-referenced format. This American edition has been thoroughly revised and expanded, and features an extensive section on writing for the Internet and new sections on writing for jazz, popular music, world musics, and ethnography. Additionally, a companion website presents a broad range of writing samples and links to key resources.
