Book Transmutations of Desire

Download or read book Transmutations of Desire written by Qiancheng Li and published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the West, love occupies center stage in the modern age, whether in art, intellectual life, or the economic life. We may observe a similar development in China, on its own impetus, which has resulted in this characteristic of modernity--this feature of modern life has been securely and unambiguously established, not the least facilitated by the thriving of literature about qing, whether in traditional or modern forms. Qiancheng Li concentrates on the nuances of a similar trend manifested in the Chinese context. The emphasis is on critical readings of the texts that have shaped this trend, including important Ming- and Qing-dynasty works of drama, Buddhist texts and other religious/philosophical works, in all their subtlety and evocative power. "The power of qing or strong emotion is a major theme in late imperial Chinese literature--some writers asserting that it can transcend even life itself. Qiancheng Li surveys a number of seventeenth-century philosophical, religious, and literary texts to elucidate the metaphysical aspects of emotional attachment and of sexual desire in particular. Through his broad and penetrating reading, Li demonstrates incontrovertibly how, to seventeenth-century writers, qing and religion were inextricably linked. To those writers, qing could bring enlightenment, and certainly Li’s study enlightens its readers to new levels of complexity in major literary works of that period. Transmutations of Desire sets a major new milestone in the study of traditional Chinese culture."--Robert E. Hegel, Washington University in St. Louis

  • Pages : 1621 pages

Download or read book Information China written by Zhongguo she hui ke xue yuan and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1989 with total page 1621 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of this work is enormous. The Chinese government and General Secretary Zhao Ziyang in particular, encouraged and supported the project. The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences commissioned over 100 of China's authorities to write for the work. The result is China's view of herself, written in a refreshingly self-critical style, highlighting past errors and plans for the future and identifying areas of collaboration between China and outside agencies. It embraces every aspect of the physical, political, economic, social, and cultural life of China, with a detailed historical background and soundly based projections for the future. Sections deal with geography and climate, natural resources, history, conservation, agriculture, economy, industry, trade and commerce, literature and the arts, and tourism. An end section, "China in Figures" provides a current statistical data source and an important primary resource. Topics are discussed in an historical context, followed by a detailed analysis of the current situation and by an analysis of defects and errors made to date, ending with future economic and cultural plans. The three volumes are illustrated with some 1250 photographs (250 in color), line drawings and tables. Well-printed in the UK on alkaline paper. Biennial supplementary volumes are planned starting in 1990. An important reference despite its self-congratulating bent. The bibliography is small and contains a disproportion of Pergamon Press titles. Those using Kaplan and Sobin, Encyclopedia of China today must consider this work. Book Further Adventures on the Journey to the West

Download or read book Further Adventures on the Journey to the West written by Master of Silent Whistle Studio and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the audacious Monkey King battles his way through a landscape of inexplicable places and unfamiliar passions, Further Adventures on the Journey to the West offers a wry, revisionist critique of the late-Ming fascination with desire. Building on the great sixteenth-century novel Journey to the West, which recounts the escapades of a monk and three companions traveling to India in search of Buddhist scriptures to carry back to China, this sequel is a parable of self-delusion that explores the tension between desire and emptiness from a Buddhist perspective. The consummate literati novel, written by an accomplished artist for a well-educated readership, it is filled with allusions and parodies and features a dream-sequence narrative that is innovative and sophisticated even by modern standards. This new, fully annotated translation by two acclaimed scholars and translators brings to life this remarkably inventive, playful early modern text. The volume includes the original commentaries and illustrations, a critical introduction and afterword, and notes that highlight the sources of the novel’s intertextual references, revealing the author’s erudition and versatility.

Book The Cambridge History of China Volume 2 The Six Dynasties 220 589

Download or read book The Cambridge History of China Volume 2 The Six Dynasties 220 589 written by Albert E. Dien and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Six Dynasties Period (220-589 CE) is one of the most complex in Chinese history. Written by leading scholars from across the globe, the essays in this volume cover nearly every aspect of the period, including politics, foreign relations, warfare, agriculture, gender, art, philosophy, material culture, local society, and music. While acknowledging the era's political chaos, these essays indicate that this was a transformative period when Chinese culture was significantly changed and enriched by foreign peoples and ideas. It was also a time when history and literature became recognized as independent subjects and religion was transformed by the domestication of Buddhism and the formation of organized Daoism. Many of the trends that shaped the rest of imperial China's history have their origins in this era, such as the commercial vibrancy of southern China, the separation of history and literature from classical studies, and the growing importance of women in politics and religion.

Book An Introduction to Chinese Poetry

Download or read book An Introduction to Chinese Poetry written by Michael Fuller and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This innovative textbook for learning classical Chinese poetry moves beyond the traditional anthology of poems translated into English and instead brings readers—including those with no knowledge of Chinese—as close as possible to the texture of the poems in their original language. The first two chapters introduce the features of classical Chinese that are important for poetry and then survey the formal and rhetorical conventions of classical poetry. The core chapters present the major poets and poems of the Chinese poetic tradition from earliest times to the lyrics of the Song Dynasty (960–1279).Each chapter begins with an overview of the historical context for the poetry of a particular period and provides a brief biography for each poet. Each of the poems appears in the original Chinese with a word-by-word translation, followed by Michael A. Fuller’s unadorned translation, and a more polished version by modern translators. A question-based study guide highlights the important issues in reading and understanding each particular text.Designed for classroom use and for self-study, the textbook’s goal is to help the reader appreciate both the distinctive voices of the major writers in the Chinese poetic tradition and the grand contours of the development of that tradition."
