Download or read book Manual of Conchology Vol 14 written by George W. Tryon Jr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Conchology, Vol. 14: Structural and Systematic, With Illustrations of the Species The author begs those who may use this work to begin by taking apart one specimen of each species to be studied then find the genus by the Key on page xxviii. After a certain amount of practice the genus may be' ascertained by removing valves vii and viii only but guessing it from the external features is in most cases uncertain and unscientific. As a rule, Chitons tell no secrets to those who will not take the trouble to disarticulate them. It is hoped that describers of new species will hereafter state the generic characters of their novelties. It is as rational to describe a bivalve without examining its hinge-teeth, as to notice the outside only of a Chiton. The synonymy is believed to be practically exhaustive, except that useless references to mere lists giving no new information are omitted. Attention should here be directed to the new theories of the origin of important structures of shell and girdle, given on pp. Ix, xii; to the original system of classification (p. Xxiii), and the phylogenies (pp. Xxvii, xxviii). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Manual of Conchology Vol 2 written by George W. Tryon Jr. and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Conchology, Vol. 2: Structural and Systematic With Illustrations of the Species In the preparation of the introductory portion of the present volume free use has been made of Keferstein's admirable work, forming part of "Broun's Klassen und Ordnungen d.Thierreichs: " - the most comprehensive treatise on the anatomy of the mollusca which has yet appeared. Of course many additional facts and some corrections have been published since the issue of that work, and abstracts of the most important of these have been herein incorporated. I have endeavored to avoid the prolixity of Keferstein without sacrificing clearness of language, but occasionally quote his very words. The few statements for which I alone am responsible, are made in the first person. The body of literature consulted is too extensive for quotation in a work like this, where much must necessarily be sacrificed for the sake of brevity. Wlilst I have freely used the admirable illustrations of Keiner, Reeve, Sowerby, Kiister, and other monographs. I have added to these hundreds of figures, names and items of information gleaned from fugitive papers and scientific periodicals; so that I am enabled to )resent a carefully arranged, concise account of all that is known concerning the Murices and Purpurae. I may be thought by some, to have treated the species in a too conservative spirit; my object in the investigations of which this work is the result, has been solely to ascertain truth, not to establish, maintain or destroy scientific reputations. Book Manual of Conchology Vol 23

Download or read book Manual of Conchology Vol 23 written by Henry A. Pilsbry and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Conchology, Vol. 23: Appendix to Amastridae; Tornatellinidae The present volume, mainly concerned with the Family Tornatellinidae, completes a trilogy treating of the snails of Pacific Islands, chiefly of the Hawaiian Islands; the other volumes deal with the Families Amastridae and Achatinellidae. Together with the Partulidae (Volume XX) these are numerically the most important families of the land-snail faunas of the Pacific. They also comprise nearly all of the large laud snails of these faunas. Members of the Superfamily Orthurethra, these primitive land snails, dispersed in the Palaeozoic, parallel the Sigmurethra in their adaptations. There are terrestrial and arboreal types, and cylindric, conic, Bulimoid, Achatinoid and Helicoid shell-forms. This remarkable parallelism has caused the Orthurethrous genera to be scattered, in former classifications, among the series of continental families of the Superfamily Sigmurethra, an arrangement which ignored the structural features of the pallial organs. Of the 219 species and 44 subspecies or named varieties described in this volume, 93 species and 38 subspecies are here defined for the first time. The type-specimens of 168 of the species and subspecies have been examined by one or (usually) both of the authors; also cotypes, paratypes or specimens from the original lots of many other species. Thirty-seven of the species and subspecies herein described have not been seen by either author. Part of these are nominal species, known only by the original descriptions, not subsequently identified by authors or collectors. As half the world separated the authors during the preparation of the manuscript, it was not always possible to collaborate upon every point. The first part of the work, up to p. 68, was therefore chiefly by the senior, the succeeding pages, up to p. 113, mainly by the junior author. In the rest of the book the work is mingled in every genus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
