Book excerpt: The report confronts the nature of the process of learning an intellectual skill, the ability to solve problems efficiently in a particular domain of discourse. The investigation is synthetic; a computational performance model, HACKER, is displayed. HACKER is a computer problem-solving system whose performance inproves with practice. HACKER maintains performance knowledge as a library of procedures indexed by descriptions of the problem types for which the procedures are appropriate. When applied to a problem, HACKER tries to use a procedure from this 'Answer Library'. If no procedure is found to be applicable, HACKER writes one using more general knowledge of the problem domain and of programming techniques. This new program may be generalized and added to the Answer Library. (Modified author abstract).

Chapter 6 embarks on describing expert modeling-based models, suggesting modeling an expert through elicitation or guidance for the acquisition of knowledge & skills, development of expertise, and performance improvement. Chapter 7 covers some newer movements toward cognition-based models, which are theories or models focusing on mechanisms of cognitive learning for the acquisition of knowledge & skills, development of expertise, and performance improvement. Chapter 8 concludes the book by integrating views from various thought leaders to explain a famous staged skill acquisition model.

It was a quasi-experimental design research. A sample of four schools consisting of two hundred and thirty five (235) senior secondary one (SS 1) students from Awka South L.G.A of Anambra state were selected using purposive sampling technique. The study was guided by four research questions and four null hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance. Two research instruments, namely the Computer Achievement Test (CAT) and the Computer Practical Skill Acquisition Test (COMPSAT), which have a reliability of 0.69 and 0.60, using Kuder Richardson formula 20 (KR-20), were used to collect data for the study. The mean and standard deviation statistics were used to answer the research question, while the ANCOVA and Z-test was used to test the hypothesis.
