Book A Comprehensive Model for Energy Transport and Ablation of Metal Films Induced by Ultrashort Pulsed Lasers

Download or read book A Comprehensive Model for Energy Transport and Ablation of Metal Films Induced by Ultrashort Pulsed Lasers written by Yunpeng Ren and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive laser material ablation model was developed to describe energy transport, ultrafast phase changes, and material ablation of metal films irradiated by ultrashort laser pulses. The two optical models were incorporated into the TTM to simulate laser energy deposition and the resulting thermal response, ultrafast phase changes from solid to liquid and from liquid to vapor, and phase explosion of metal films irradiated by ultrashort laser pulses. It was found that dynamic optical properties could play a very important role in modeling ultrashort-pulsed laser interactions with metal materials. In the semi-classical TTM, due to the effect of electron drifting, slightly lower electron and lattice temperatures were obtained compared to those calculated by the classical TTM under the same laser irradiation conditions. Higher laser fluence and longer pulse duration could result in more distinct difference between the two models. For multi-pulse irradiations, the results showed that with the same total energy in a laser burst, more pulses with a shorter separation time, e.g., 1 ps, or fewer pulses with a longer separation time, e.g., 100 ps, could achieve higher lattice temperature. Results of laser material ablations show that for high laser fluences phase explosion is a dominating mechanism in material ablation. The simulated ablation depths correlated very well with existing experimental data over a broad range of fluences, 0.6 - 30 J/cm2.

Book High Speed Direct Imaging of Thin Metal Film Ablation by Movie mode Dynamic Transmission Electron Microscopy

Download or read book High Speed Direct Imaging of Thin Metal Film Ablation by Movie mode Dynamic Transmission Electron Microscopy written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obliteration of matter by pulsed laser beams is not only prevalent in science fiction movies, but finds numerous technological applications ranging from additive manufacturing over machining of micro- and nanostructured features to health care. Pulse lengths ranging from femtoseconds to nanoseconds are utilized at varying laser beam energies and pulse lengths, and enable the removal of nanometric volumes of material. While the mechanisms for removal of material by laser irradiation, i.e., laser ablation, are well understood on the micrometer length scale, it was previously impossible to directly observe obliteration processes on smaller scales due to experimental limitations for the combination of nanometer spatial and nanosecond temporal resolution. Here, we report the direct observation of metal thin film ablation from a solid substrate through dynamic transmission electron microscopy. Quantitative analysis reveals liquid-phase dewetting of the thin-film, followed by hydrodynamic sputtering of nano- to submicron sized metal droplets. We discovered unexpected fracturing of the substrate due to evolving thermal stresses. This study confirms that hydrodynamic sputtering remains a valid mechanism for droplet expulsion on the nanoscale, while irradiation induced stress fields represent limit laser processing of nanostructured materials. Ultimately, our results allow for improved safety during laser ablation in manufacturing and medical applications.

Book Metal Processing with Ultra Short Laser Pulses

Download or read book Metal Processing with Ultra Short Laser Pulses written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Femtosecond laser ablation has been shown to produce well-defined cuts and holes in metals with minimal heat effect to the remaining material. Ultrashort laser pulse processing shows promise as an important technique for materials processing. We will discuss the physical effects associated with processing based experimental and modeling results. Intense ultra-short laser pulse (USLP) generates high pressures and temperatures in a subsurface layer during the pulse, which can strongly modify the absorption. We carried out simulations of USLP absorption versus material and pulse parameters. The ablation rate as function of the laser parameters has been estimated. Since every laser pulse removes only a small amount of material, a practical laser processing system must have high repetition rate. We will demonstrate that planar ablation is unstable and the initially smooth crater bottom develops a corrugated pattern after many tens of shots. The corrugation growth rate, angle of incidence and the polarization of laser electric field dependence will be discussed. In the nonlinear stage, the formation of coherent structures with scales much larger than the laser wavelength was observed. Also, there appears to be a threshold fluence above which a narrow, nearly perfectly circular channel forms after a few hundred shots. Subsequent shots deepen this channel without significantly increasing its diameter. The role of light absorption in the hole walls will be discussed.

Book Laser Ablation and Its Applications

Download or read book Laser Ablation and Its Applications written by Claude Phipps and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser ablation describes the interaction of intense optical fields with matter, in which atoms are selectively driven off by thermal or nonthermal mechanisms. The field of laser ablation physics is advancing so rapidly that its principal results are seen only in specialized journals and conferences. This is the first book that combines the most recent results in this rapidly advancing field with authoritative treatment of laser ablation and its applications, including the physics of high-power laser-matter interaction. Many practical applications exist, ranging from inertial confinement fusion to propulsion of aerostats for pollution monitoring to laser ignition of hypersonic engines to laser cleaning nanoscale contaminants in high-volume computer hard drive manufacture to direct observation of the electronic or dissociative states in atoms and molecules, to studying the properties of materials during 200kbar shocks developed in 200fs. Selecting topics which are representative of such a broad field is difficult. Laser Ablation and its Applications emphasizes the wide range of these topics rather than - as is so often the case in advanced science – focusing on one specialty or discipline. The book is divided into four sections: theory and modeling, ultrafast interactions, material processing and laser-matter interaction in novel regimes. The latter range from MALDI to ICF, SNOM’s and femtosecond nanosurgery to laser space propulsion. The book arose from the SPIE series of High Power Laser Ablation Symposia which began in 1998. It is intended for a graduate course in laser interactions with plasmas and materials, but it should be accessible to anyone with a graduate degree in physics or engineering. It is also intended as a major reference work to familiarize scientists just entering the field with laser ablation and its applications.
