Book A Comprehensive Examination of Factors Influencing Auto Ownership Decisions

Download or read book A Comprehensive Examination of Factors Influencing Auto Ownership Decisions written by Mateusz Dolata and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Household auto ownership levels influence travel behavior in a variety of ways, including the number of trips made, the distance traveled to activity locations, and the travel mode chosen. In recent years, significant effort has been placed on designing urban policy strategies with the intended goal of decreasing dependency on automobile travel. Included within these policies has been movement towards principles of new urbanism - urban areas with higher density of development, diversity of land-uses, and design for pedestrian and bicycle modes. This paper attempts to shed light on how a variety of factors, including urban form, impact auto ownership. By knowing which factors truly impact auto ownership decisions, effective policy decisions can be made to impact travel behavior in metropolitan areas. This work examines the impact of explanatory variables through a Multinomial Logit (MNL) model. A MNL model based on San Francisco Bay Area data is developed and the impact of significant explanatory variables on auto ownership is examined. Variables include measures of the urban form and household demographics. This work provides an empirical model that synthesizes the advances made in use of detailed urban form measures together with demographic data describing household characteristics

Book EcoDesign and Sustainability II

Download or read book EcoDesign and Sustainability II written by Yusuke Kishita and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 643 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights cutting-edge ecodesign research, covering product and service design, smart manufacturing, and social perspectives in ecodesign. Featuring selected papers presented at EcoDesign 2019: 11th International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing, it also includes diverse, interdisciplinary approaches to foster ecodesign research and activities. In the context of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it addresses the need for the manufacturing industry to design innovations for sustainable value creation, taking into account technological developments, legislation, and consumer lifestyles. Further, the book discusses the concept of circular economy, which originated in Europe and aims to increase resource efficiency by shifting away from the linear economy. Focusing on product life cycle design and management, smart manufacturing, circular economy, and business strategies, and providing useful approaches and solutions to these emerging concepts, this book is intended for both researchers and practitioners working in the broad field of ecodesign and sustainability.

Book excerpt: An accessible introduction and essential reference for an approach to machine learning that creates highly accurate prediction rules by combining many weak and inaccurate ones. Boosting is an approach to machine learning based on the idea of creating a highly accurate predictor by combining many weak and inaccurate “rules of thumb.” A remarkably rich theory has evolved around boosting, with connections to a range of topics, including statistics, game theory, convex optimization, and information geometry. Boosting algorithms have also enjoyed practical success in such fields as biology, vision, and speech processing. At various times in its history, boosting has been perceived as mysterious, controversial, even paradoxical. This book, written by the inventors of the method, brings together, organizes, simplifies, and substantially extends two decades of research on boosting, presenting both theory and applications in a way that is accessible to readers from diverse backgrounds while also providing an authoritative reference for advanced researchers. With its introductory treatment of all material and its inclusion of exercises in every chapter, the book is appropriate for course use as well. The book begins with a general introduction to machine learning algorithms and their analysis; then explores the core theory of boosting, especially its ability to generalize; examines some of the myriad other theoretical viewpoints that help to explain and understand boosting; provides practical extensions of boosting for more complex learning problems; and finally presents a number of advanced theoretical topics. Numerous applications and practical illustrations are offered throughout.
