Book excerpt: I have worked with a lot of projects which was written by usual "everything in controller" way and when they become to grow their support complexity grows exponentially. Sometimes developers tried to move code to helper classes, but it doesn't help a lot. Every project had the same illnesses: Copy-paste driven development, God classes, etc. Modern frameworks offers a lot of features to implement functionality super-fast, but when project grows almost all these "optimizations" becomes a big pain for developers. In the same time there a lot of dogmas, like SOLID and others, which described very abstractly and becomes some kind of cargo cults. "if project has 100% code coverage by unit tests, it has super code quality", "if project doesn't have static methods, it's well organized", etc. Someone very clever said: Software Engineering Is Art Of Compromise. Some of these dogmas have very important exceptions. Some of them easy to misunderstand.In this book I'm going to analyze usual project with common mistakes. How implementing new requirements can decrease code quality. Then step by step I'll show how I usually refactor the code: extracting classes, using DI, using exceptions. How this refactoring consequences moving to layered architecture. After moving to layered architecture we will talk about pro and contras of Command Query Responsibility Segregation(CQRS). After CQRS it's hard to don't talk about Event Sourcing(ES).I'll use examples in Laravel , but it's not very important. The book is about framework-agnostic code.

It was a dif?cult era for many people and organisations. Many were affected by war, terrorism, famine, ?re and tsunamis. First-world citizens enjoyed opportunities to relax in a technologically driven n- vana. People on streets, trains and planes from London, Tokyo to New York sported the white ear buds of iPhones as de rigueur adornments. The pace and intensity of our lives now seems to run at warp speed, we rush from appointment to appoi- ment swigging vitamin-enhanced mineral water obsessing about ?uctuations in our body mass index and the Dow Jones index in equal measure. Yet as individuals we can choose to accept or reject some of these changes. Those with suf?cient ma- rial resources can cocoon themselves in high-security fortress homes or relocate to safer, more tranquil environs, or even redesign themselves with the aid of Botox and a skilled plastic surgeon. Yet some organisations do not have the luxury of volition, they cannot choose whether to accept or reject the affects of environmental changes. A type of organisation that has found itself situated in environments that are increasingly complex and turbulent are academic units (departments, schools and faculties) in many publicly funded universities around the globe.

Book excerpt: This book turns conventional global-historical analysis on its head, demonstrating, first, that local events cannot be derived — logically or historically — from large-scale, global-historical structures and processes and, second, that it is these structures and processes that, in fact, emerge from our analysis of local events. This is made evident via an analysis of three disparate events: the New York City Draft Riots, AIDS in Mozambique, and a 2007 flood in central Uruguay. In each case, Baronov chronicles how expressions of human agency at the level of those caught up in each event give form and substance to various abstract global-historical concepts — such as slavery in the Americas, global capitalist production, and colonial/postcolonial Africa. Underlying this repositioning of the local and the ephemeral is an immanent, phenomenological analysis that illustrates how mere transient events are the progenitors of otherwise abstract, global-historical concepts. Traversing the intersections of human agency and structural determinism, Baronov deftly retains the nuance and serendipity of everyday life, while deploying this nuance and serendipity to further embellish our understanding of those enduring global-historical structures and processes that shape large-scale, long-term, historical accounts of social and cultural change across the historical social sciences.
