Book Imperialism and Expansionism in American History 4 volumes

Download or read book Imperialism and Expansionism in American History 4 volumes written by Chris J. Magoc and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 1665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This four-volume encyclopedia chronicles the historical roots of the United States' current military dominance, documenting its growth from continental expansionism to hemispheric hegemony to global empire. This groundbreaking four-volume encyclopedia offers sweeping coverage of a subject central to American history and of urgent importance today as the nation wrestles with a global imperial posture and the long-term viability of the largest military establishment in human history. The work features more than 650 entries encompassing the full scope of American expansionism and imperialism from the colonial era through the 21st-century "War on Terror." Readers will learn about U.S.-Native American conflicts; 19th-century land laws; early forays overseas, for example, the opening of Japan; and America's imperial conflicts in Cuba and the Philippines. U.S. interests in Latin America are explored, as are the often-forgotten ambitions that lay behind the nation's involvement in the World Wars. The work also offers extensive coverage of the Cold War and today's ongoing conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa, and the Middle East as they relate to U.S. national interests. Notable individuals, including American statesmen, military commanders, influential public figures, and anti-imperialists are covered as well. The inclusion of cultural elements of American expansionism and imperialism—for example, Hollywood films and protest music—helps distinguish this set from other more limited works.

Book Stephen A Douglas Western Man

Download or read book Stephen A Douglas Western Man written by Reg Ankrom and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-04-23 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It didn't take long for freshman Congressman Stephen A. Douglas to see the truth of Senator Thomas Hart Benton's warning: slavery attached itself to every measure that came before the U.S. Congress. Douglas wanted to expand the nation into an ocean-bound republic. Yet slavery and the violent conflicts it stirred always interfered, as it did in 1844 with his first bill to organize Nebraska. In 1848, when America acquired 550,000 square miles after the Mexican War, the fight began over whether the territory would be free or slave. Henry Clay, a slave owner who favored gradual emancipation, packaged territorial bills from Douglas's committee with four others. But Clay's "Omnibus Bill" failed. Exhausted, he left the Senate, leaving Douglas in control. Within two weeks, Douglas won passage of all eight bills, and President Millard Fillmore signed the Compromise of 1850. It was Douglas's greatest legislative achievement. This book, a sequel to the author's Stephen A. Douglas: The Political Apprenticeship, 1833-1843, fully details Douglas's early congressional career. The text chronicles how Douglas moved the issue of slavery from Congress to the ballot box.

Book Lincoln and His World

Download or read book Lincoln and His World written by Richard Lawrence Miller and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on deep consultation of seldom-examined primary sources, this third volume in Richard Lawrence Miller's massive Lincoln biography follows Lincoln's long effort to win a seat in Congress, his activity there, and his return to Illinois--chastened by his Washington experience. Topics include: Lincoln's anti-slavery efforts in Congress; the popularity of his stance against the Mexican War (which, contrary to common belief, didn't significantly harm his political reputation); his support of Zachary Taylor's presidential campaign and his subsequent efforts to win a patronage job from the Taylor White House; his political activities after returning to Illinois; and his generally happy home life with Mary and his sons. Throughout the work, a new portrait emerges of Lincoln as a canny politician, making his own luck by striking swiftly and strongly when opportunities arose.

Book Judicial Tyranny

Download or read book Judicial Tyranny written by Mark Sutherland and published by Amerisearch, Inc.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in the greatest nation on Planet Earth, but it is becoming more and more apparent that in order to keep it great, people must do something to stop the federal courts that are daily setting themselves above the law and dictating how we should live and what we should think. This book is designed to bring you up to speed on the ongoing struggle against an over-reaching judicial branch, without overwhelming you with legal double-speak. It is written in plain American, and presented in bite-sized pieces. After studying the principles in this book, you will better understand the role of government and how to react when the next judge throws out the will of the people in favor of the latest social engineering project. To bring our nation back from the elites in black robes that wish to redefine everything we are as Americans, it is going to take work. Edmund Burke, the famous British politician who supported our War of Independence while serving in the British Parliament, stated a simple truth that still applies to us today: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." We have done nothing for too long, and we are paying the price today. But it is not too late. The fight has only just begun. But by picking up this book you are taking the first step, and together we can turn our nation around. This book features chapters from some of our nation's most prominent leaders in the battle for continued liberty and freedom in our nation, such as: A CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS-US Attorney General Ed Meese THOU SHALT HAVE NO GOD BEFORE US-Benjamin D. DuPr , Esq. THE POWER OF OUR TRUE HISTORY-Dave Meyer A CHRISTIAN AMERICA?-David C. Gibbs III, Esq.
