Book A Compilation of Forest Biomass Harvesting and Related Policy in Canada

Download or read book A Compilation of Forest Biomass Harvesting and Related Policy in Canada written by Jean Roach and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this literature review is to summarize policies, including legislation, regulations and guidelines, related to the harvest of woody forest biomass in Canada. The focus of the literature review is on policy that applies to Crown land. The report focusses on policy related to biomass harvesting from logged blocks and roadside debris, rather than purpose-grown plantations, since this is seen as the major new forest biomass energy source, and policy relating to the latter has not been developed in Canada.--Document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing deployment of bioenergy frequently raises issues regarding the use of land and raw materials, infrastructure and logistics. In light of these sometimes conflicting interests Advances in Bioenergy provides an objective and wide-ranging overview of the technology, economics and policy of bioenergy. Offering an authoritative multidisciplinary summary of the opportunities and challenges associated with bioenergy utilization, with international researchers give up-to-date and detailed information on key issues for biomass production and conversion to energy. Key features: *Discusses different bioenergy uses such as transportation fuels, electricity and heat production. *Assesses emerging fields such as bio-based chemicals and bio-refineries. *Debates conditions for the mobilization of sustainable bioenergy supply chains and outlines governance systems to support this mobilization. * Dedicated chapters to sustainability governance and emerging tools such as certification systems and standards supporting growth of a sustainable bioenergy industry. *Considers the political, environmental, social and cultural context related to the demand for energy resources, the impact of this demand on the world around us, and the choices and behaviours of consumers. This book will be a vital reference to engineers, researchers and students that need an accessible overview of the bioenergy area. It will also be of high value for politicians, policymakers and industry leaders that need to stay up to date with the state-of-the-art science and technology in this area.

Book Global Change and Forest Soils

Download or read book Global Change and Forest Soils written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-11-23 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Change and Forest Soils: Cultivating Stewardship of a Finite Natural Resource, Volume 36, provides a state-of-the-science summary and synthesis of global forest soils that identifies concerns, issues and opportunities for soil adaptation and mitigation as external pressures from global changes arise. Where, how and why some soils are resilient to global change while others are at risk is explored, as are upcoming train wrecks and success stories across boreal, temperate, and tropical forests. Each chapter offers multiple sections written by leading soil scientists who comment on wildfires, climate change and forest harvesting effects, while also introducing examples of current global issues. Readers will find this book to be an integrated, up-to-date assessment on global forest soils. - Presents sections on boreal, temperate and tropical soils for a diverse audience - Serves as an important reference source for anyone interested in both a big-picture assessment of global soil issues and an in-depth examination of specific environmental topics - Provides a unique synthesis of forest soils and their collective ability to respond to global change - Offers chapters written by leading soil scientists - Prepares readers to meet the daily challenges of drafting multi-resource environmental science and policy documents

  • Pages : 60 pages

Download or read book Tree Power written by Peter Love and published by [Ottawa]: Energy, Mines and Resources Canada, Renewable Energy Resources Branch. This book was released on 1978 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report is to present a preliminary estimate of the potential contribution of forestry biomass to Canada's energy requirements to the year 2025. It begins with a review of forestry biomass conversion technologies, from which three reference cases have been formulated to facilitate discussion: direction conversion of wood to electricity in a 50-megawatt boiler; low-Btu gasification of wood combined with on-site utilization; and wood gasification combined with methanol production from the resulting synthesis gas. The report then estimates the total resource of forest biomass in Canada and evaluates sources of supply, including forest residues and energy plantations. It discusses principal uses for the different types of energy (steam, electricity, fuels) that can be produced from forest biomass, the factors affecting implementation of forest biomass energy technologies (including institutional constraints and environmental and social impacts), and the costs of energy produced by the three reference cases.
