Book The AFCRL 29 ft Millimeter wave Antenna

Download or read book The AFCRL 29 ft Millimeter wave Antenna written by L. M. Keane and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general description of AFCRL's new 29-ft parabolic antenna is given. This antenna, designed for operation at 35 Gc, has Cassegrain feed optics and a precise reflecting surfdce supported on an elevation over azimuth mount. Design parameters include a gain of 67.5 dB at 35 Gc and a pointing capability of better than =1 arc min under 30-knot wind loads, normal solar loading, and peak accelerations of .012 deg/sq sec. The servo system was designed primarily to track objects traveling at sidereal rates. A limited satellite tracking capability should exist, however. Emphasis is given to engineering aspects of the tower, mount, drive system, and reflector assembly which should provide efficient rf operation and extreme precision in pointing. (Author).

Book Earth Science Applied to Military Use of Natural Terrain

Download or read book Earth Science Applied to Military Use of Natural Terrain written by Stanley M. Needleman and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of the state-of-the-art in the evaluation of natural terrain by earth-science techniques and measurement systems is presented in response to a need that existed for many years. This report considers the terrain as an envelope of the environment and all related parameters that are basic in an evaluation for relevant military applications such as unimproved landing areas, trafficability, site selection for operational facilities, terrain reconnaissance and surveillance, and target detection within a masked terrain complex. Methods of terrain-data acquisition, analysis, and evaluation and their limitations are reviewed. The status of research and development, specifying the gaps in technology, is summarized with accompanying conclusions. The report forecasts the requirement for an automated terrain-data acquisition, storage, and display system. Information pertaining to the classification of terrain data, field devices to measure bearing strength, and a visualized optimum remote sensing system is also given in the appendix. A glossary and a comprehensive bibliography are included. (Author).

Book A Family Outbreak of Severe Local Storms

Download or read book A Family Outbreak of Severe Local Storms written by K. A. Browning and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is a case study of an outbreak of severe local storms that produced several tornadoes and extensive large hail in Oklahoma on 26 May 1963. Several authors have combined to describe the organization, structure, and evolution of these storms from a number of points of view. The storms are analyzed on four different size scales: (1) as products of their large-scale environment, (2) as members of a mesoscale system or family unit, (3) as individual evolving cells, and (4) as tornado and hail factories, with the emphasis on the tornadoes and the hailstones themselves. Data are obtained from conventional synoptic and mesosynoptic networks, visual and photographic observations, surface weather surveys, weather radars, sferics detectors, balloon tracks, radioactivity measurements in precipitation, and hailstone thin sections. Simple models are presented describing the airflow, structure and life cycle of individual severe local storms. (Author)

Book Tables Related to Light Scattering in a Turbid Atmosphere

Download or read book Tables Related to Light Scattering in a Turbid Atmosphere written by E. DeBary and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tables present the results of computations of the intensity and the degree of polarization of sky radiation and radiation scattered by a unit volume of air containing natural aerosols. The tabulated data are based upon new values of the scattering functions i sub 1 and i sub 2 and the scattering cross sections k, derived using the Mie theory with m = 1.5. In the case of primary scattering of radiation, the results are valid for a turbid atmosphere. The tables of the scattering coefficients and optical thickness, the absolute scattering functions, the intensities, and the degrees of polarization are computed for various wavelengths between 0.4 and 1.2 microns and for discrete scattering angles between 0 degrees and 180 degrees. Aerosol size distributions of the form dn(r) = c.r/v dlogr, with v = 2.5, 3.0, and 4.0, are assumed. The lower and upper limits for the size range were chosen as r sub 1 = 0.04, 0.06, and 0.08 micron and r sub 2 = 3, 5, and 10 microns respectively. (Author).

Book Study of Ferrimagnetic Crystals by Parallel Pumping

Download or read book Study of Ferrimagnetic Crystals by Parallel Pumping written by James C. Sethares and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of single-crystal ferrimagnetic crystals at microwave frequencies was conducted. The parallel pumping technique was used to experimentally measure spin-wave line width, magnetoelastic coupling constants, energy exchange constants, and phonon linewidths. The experiments were carried out at 300K, 194K, 77K, and 4.2K at X- and K-band frequencies. Four samples of pure, single-crystal yttrium iron garnet (one disk, and three spheres) were extensively investigated. Conditions for optimum detection sensitivity of spin-wave instability measurement are given and discussed. The theory of parallel pumping is explained and worked out in detail. Expressions are obtained for spin-wave and phonon linewidths, magnetoelastic constants and exchange constants in terms of experimentally measured quantities. A literature search was made for publications dealing with parallel-pumping phenomena. These articles (over 75) are abstracted for their contents relative to this investigation. (Author).
