Book The Effect of Trait Anxiety on State Anxiety and Free Throw Performance of Female Collegiate Basketball Players

Download or read book The Effect of Trait Anxiety on State Anxiety and Free Throw Performance of Female Collegiate Basketball Players written by Kayla A. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cattell (1965) and Spielberger (1966) proposed that there are two types of anxiety: state (fluctuating, temporary anxiety) and trait (stable, personality characteristic). The Yerkes-Dodson Law (1908) states that an individual’s performance can either be enhanced or impaired depending on the individual’s level of anxiety/arousal. Nideffer’s (1989) theory of Attentional and Interpersonal Style offers an explanation for the relationship between anxiety/arousal and performance, stating that the levels of anxiety/arousal effect an athlete’s willingness/ability to concentrate on task-relevant cues that aid performance. The purpose of this study was to determine if trait anxiety affects state anxiety and free throw performance of female collegiate basketball players. The revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) was used to measure the participants’ trait anxiety and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used to measure the participants’ state anxiety in a pre-post design during two conditions (no pressure vs pressure). An ANOVA was used to test each hypothesis at the .05 level. Results demonstrated that trait anxiety had a significant effect on state anxiety with the level of state anxiety increasing as the level of trait anxiety increases. However, trait anxiety did not have a significant effect on performance. State anxiety had a significant effect on performance with performance decreasing as state anxiety increases. Condition also had a significant effect on performance with performance increasing in the second condition (pressure). These results indicate that individuals perform worse when they experience increasing levels of arousal and that pressure causes performance to increase.

Book Don t Worry about It

Download or read book Don t Worry about It written by Chad McCoy and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pre-performance routines have been found to enhance performance in many sports. These routines may have effects both cognitively and physiologically on those who perform them. Difference in physiological arousal, as measured by heart rate, was measured on participants during a basketball free throw under varying pressure situations. One treatment condition was given a pre-performance routine as means of controlling arousal. Those who received a pre-performance routine experienced less physiological arousal on Day 1 and Day 3 when compared to the no-routine control condition. Findings suggest that the implementation of a pre-performance routine prior to basketball free throws may help decrease physiological arousal."--Abstract of thesis.

Book The Effect of a Brief Mindfulness Intervention on Free throw Shooting Performance

Download or read book The Effect of a Brief Mindfulness Intervention on Free throw Shooting Performance written by Nathan James Wolch and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressure situations in sport can be a source of anxiety for athletes (Craft, Magyar, Becker, & Feltz, 2003). Research indicates that a brief mindfulness training can improve math performance under pressure (Brunye et al., 2013); however, no known studies have examined the effects of mindfulness practice on an athletic performance under pressure. Therefore, this experiment investigated the effects of a brief mindfulness training on basketball free-throw shooting under pressure. Participants were 32 college-aged (Mage = 21.29), male competitive basketball players. Participants shot 20 free-throws in a low-pressure phase, then were pair-matched by free-throws made and randomly assigned to mindfulness (n = 16) or control (n = 16) conditions. Pressure was induced before participants listened to a 15-minute mindfulness or history of basketball recording. Next, free-throws made and free-throw shot quality were recorded for 20 free-throws. A mixed ANOVA revealed that during the high-pressure phase, the experimental groups' free-throw shooting average (M = 70.6%) was not statistically significantly different from the control groups' (M = 61.6%). Results of an ANCOVA revealed that the mindfulness group's shot quality was higher than the control group's during the high-pressure phase and approached a statistically significant difference when controlling for trait mindfulness (F = 2.33, p = .051, Ƞp2 = .13). During the high-pressure phase, the mindfulness group reported statistically significantly lower levels of cognitive anxiety (t = 2.06, p = .048) and somatic anxiety (t = 2.67, p = .014) than the control group. Although the brief mindfulness intervention did not have a statistically significant effect on performance, the findings are discussed in terms of practical significance. The mindfulness group's significantly lower anxiety indicates that mindfulness training may improve athletes' subjective experience during pressure situations.

Book Psychoneuroendocrinology of Sport and Exercise

Download or read book Psychoneuroendocrinology of Sport and Exercise written by Felix Ehrlenspiel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-22 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychoneuroendocrinology is the study of the interaction between hormones, the brain and human behaviour. This is the first book to examine psychoneuroendocrinology in the context of sport and exercise, offering a comprehensive review of current research and assessment techniques and highlighting directions for future research. The book explores the links between hormones and behaviour, and draws important conclusions for how their study will aid in the understanding of the bidirectional link between sport and behaviour, central to the psychology of sport and exercise. It presents the key hormones that underpin behaviour in a sporting context, including the description of their physiologic mechanisms and behavioural effects. The book reports benchmark standards for the assessment and analysis of hormonal influences of behaviour in sport, and examines practical issues and contexts such as emotional state, overtraining and stress. Psychoneuroendocrinology in Sport and Exercise is a breakthrough text that will be of interest to all advanced students and researchers working in the psychology and physiology of sport and exercise.
