Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comparison of the Potential and the Euler Formulations of the Equations of Motion for Transonic Flow It is well known that the most efficient cruising speed of modern commercial aircraft lies in a range of free stream Mach numbers M0 near 7, where the fluid flow past the body may be characterized as transonic or supercritical. The flight efficiency is measured by the dimensionless parameter Moo CL C D, where C L and C D are the coefficients of lift and drag, respectively. In this range of Mach numbers a region of supersonic flow forms above the wing, which is terminated by a shock wave across which the pressure, density, and velocity of the fluid change rapidly. A rapid rise in the drag due to these shock waves, which reduces the overall flight efficiency, occurs in the transonic range. The goal of the aeronautical engineer is to design supercritical airfoils that will postpone the onset of strong shocks until a higher cruising speed can be attained. Book excerpt: We are pleased to present the Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Computational Fluid Dynamics held at the University of Sydney, Australia, from July 15 to 19, 2002. The conference was a productive meeting of scientists, mathematicians and engineers involved in the computation of fluid flow. Keynote lectures were presented in the areas of optimisation, algorithms, turbulence and bio-fluid mechanics. Two hundred and fifty abstracts from many countries were received for con sideration. The executive committee, consisting of A. Lerat, M. Napolitano, J.J. Chattot, N. Satofuka and myself, were responsible for the selection of papers. Each of the members had a separate subcommittee to carry out the evaluation. One hundred and seventy papers were selected of which one hundred and fifty two were presented at the conference. All papers that appear in the proceedings have been peer reviewed by a panel of experts (with a minimum of two for every paper) before publication. The conference was attended by 160 delegates with a minimum of late with drawals. The informal and friendly atmosphere provided by the university sur roundings was highly appreciated, and the technical aspects of the conference were stimulating. It is appropriate here to thank Alain Lerat, the retiring secretary of the international scientific committee of the conference. We also wish to welcome J. J. Chattot who is the incoming secretary.

Book excerpt: This book Boundary Elements in Fluid Dynamics is the second volume of the two volume proceedings of the International Conference on Computer Modelling of Seas and Coastal Regions and Boundary Elements and Fluid Dynamics, held in Southampton, U.K., in April 1992. The Boundary Element Method (BEM) is now fully established as an ac curate and successful technique for solving engineering problems in a wide range of fields. The success of the method is due to its advantages in data reduction, as only the boundary of the region is modelled. Thus moving boundaries may be more easily handled, which is not the case if domain methods are used. In addition, the method is easily able to model regions to extending to infinity. Fluid mechanics is traditionally one of the most challenging areas of engi neering, the simulation of fluid motion, particularly in three dimensions, is always a serious test for any numerical method, and is an area in which BEM analysis may be used taking full advantage of its special characteris tics. The conference includes sections on turbomachinery, aerodynamics, viscous flow and turbulence models, and special flow situations. The organisers would like to thank the International Scientific Advisory Committee, the conference delegates and all of those who have actively supported the meet ing.
