This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comparison of the Features of the Earth and the Moon The story of the physical conditions of the moon had best be begun by noting that the relation of our satellite to a larger sphere is not exceptional, but' the most characteristic of all the relations of one stellar body to another. Of the planets in the solar system, all save the two nearest to the sun, Mercury and Venus, have one or more smaller spheres circling about them. The relation of the sun to the several planets in a larger way repeats this plan of grouping lesser about greater orbs. It is generally believed by astronomers that the celestial spheres have been formed by a process of condensation, due to gravitation, of matter which was originally widely diffused; that our solar system, before it was organized into the sun and lesser bodies, was in the form of a diffused nebulous mass of spheroidal form which extended beyond the orbit of the outermost planet. As this matter gathered towards the center, the material now in each of the planets and its satel lites parted from the parent body, probably at first in the form of a nebulous ring, or spiral, which in time broke and gathered into a spheroidal mass. In that detached portion of the parent nebula the process of concentration was repeated, with the result that satellites, or, as we may term them, secondary planets, were formed substantially as the greater Spheres were set off from the sun. There are many questions and doubts concerning the details of this nebular theory, but that the evolution of our solar system and probably of all stellar sys tems took place in substantially the manner indicated appears to be eminently probable; it is, indeed, fairly well established by what we know of the distant nebular: and by the rings of Saturn, which apparently contain the material which normally Should have formed one or more of its satellites, but which for some unknown reason have remained unbroken. It is not certain at just what stage in the concentration of a nebula a planet or a satellite may be set off from the parent body; nor can the present distance of the satellite from the main sphere be assumed as that at which the parting took place. It is possible that the concentration of the parent body had gone so far that the diffused or nebulous stage of its materials had been passed by and the more advanced stage of igneous fluidity entered on. It is, however, more likely that in all cases the separation occurred while the particles of matter were di vided as they are in a gas or vapor. As soon as the two spheres are separated from one another, and so long as they remain in any measure fluid, the difference in their gravitative attraction on the nearer and more remote part of their masses induces tides, and the effect of these tidal movements, as has been shown by Professor George Darwin, is necessarily to impel the two bodies farther apart. It seems certain that before the earth and the moon became essentially rigid, as they now are, the effect of these tides in driving them apart must have been great enough to account for a considerable part of the interval which now separates them. Book excerpt: Routinely going through daily life, people may be inured to the fact that Earth takes up only a small fraction of a solar system, let alone the universe. Still, the planet we call home is unique for a number of reasons. The more we can learn about Earth and its Moon—the two bodies in the solar system of which the most has been discovered to date—the more likely scientists are to uncover truths about the universe as a whole. The properties, motions, and cycles that characterize the Earth and Moon are the subjects of this mesmerizing volume, supported with details, sidebars, and labeled illustrations that any earthling would love.

Book Origin of the Earth and Moon

Download or read book Origin of the Earth and Moon written by Robin M. Canup and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2000-11-01 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The age-old question of how our home planet and its satellite originated has in recent times undergone a minor revolution. The emergence of the "giant impact theory" as the most successful model for the origin of the Moon has been difficult to reconcile with some aspects of the Earth, and the development of an integrated model for the origin of the Earth-Moon system has been difficult for this reason. However, recent technical advances in experimental and isotopic work, together with intensified interest in the modeling of planetary dynamics, have produced a wealth of new results requiring a rethinking of models for the origin of the Earth and Moon. This book is intended to serve as a resource for those scientists working closely in this field, while at the same time it provides enough balance and depth to offer an introduction for students or technically minded general readers. Its thirty chapters address isotopic and chemical constraints on accretion, the dynamics of terrestrial planet formation, the impact-triggered formation of the Earth-Moon system, differentiation of the Earth and Moon, the origin of terrestrial volatiles, and conditions on the young Earth and Moon. Covering such subjects as the history and origin of the Moon's orbit, water on the Earth, and the implications of Earth-Moon interactions for terrestrial climate and life, the book constitutes a state-of-the-art overview of the most recent investigations in the field. Although many advances have been made in our ability to evaluate competing models of the formation of the Earth-Moon system, there are still many gaps in our understanding. This book makes great strides toward closing those gaps by highlighting the extensive progress that has been made and pointing toward future research.

Book Lunar and Hawaiian Physical Features Compared Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lunar and Hawaiian Physical Features Compared Classic Reprint written by William H. Pickering and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lunar and Hawaiian Physical Features Compared The force of gravitation at the surface of the Moon is but one-sixth as great as it is upon the Earth, and this difference is usually given as the cause of the great compara tive size of the lunar formations. On the old theory that the lunar craters were due to explosions of steam, like our explosive volcanoes, it was evident that matter expelled from a crater vent could be thrown six times as far as upon the Earth. Although this theory is now practically abandoned, gravitation would still have an in uence on the relative size, since a cliff or pinnacle upon the Moon could be six times the height of one upon the Earth, and yet exert no greater crushing force on the material beneath it. Still it is very evident that this explanation alone is inads quate to account for the great difference in size actually observed. Book Origin of the Moon New Concept

Download or read book Origin of the Moon New Concept written by Erik M. Galimov and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of the Moon remains an unsolved problem of the planetary science. Researchers engaged in celestial dynamics, geophysics, and geochemistry are still discussing various models of creation of our closest cosmic neighbour. The most popular scenario, the impact hypothesis involving a collision early in the Earth's history, has been substantially challenged by the new data. The birth and development of a planet-moon system always plays a role in the formation of an entire planetary system around our Sun or around another star. This way, the story of our Moon acquires broader ramifications for one of the hottest topics of the modern scholarship. All this has motivated the authors of this book to consider a new concept and to compare the currently discussed theories, analyzing their advantages and shortcomings in explaining the experimental data.

  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Earth Moon and Planets written by Fred Lawrence Whipple and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1968 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increase in our knowledge of the solar system during the five years since the author last revised this book (1963) greatly exceeds that in the previous two decades. The program of the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the space program of the U.S.S.R. have been prime contributors to this rapid progress, but the impetus has carried over to groundbased studies of the Moon and planets as well. The advances in radio and radar astronomy alone are striking, and are continuing at an accelerating pace. This third edition of Mr. Whipple's popular and authoritative book is thoroughly revised in light of this new knowledge. The most extensive revisions are in the chapters on the Moon, Mars, and Venus--the members of the solar system on which the various space programs have concentrated. The author has included many new and dramatic illustrations in this third edition, among them photographs taken from U.S. and Russian space craft. There are striking photographs of the Moon, with close-up views of its surface texture, pictures of Mars taken from Mariner IV, and radar pictures of Venus that "see through" that planet's obscuring cloud layer. The book is written in nontechnical language and with a lucid, witty style that is readily understandable to the interested layman. Mathematics has been avoided, and scientific methods and processes are described in simple terms. In presenting the latest information about the planets and their moons, Mr. Whipple discusses their origin and evolution, motions, atmospheres, temperatures, surface conditions, the environment essential for life as we know it, and the possibilities of life outside the Earth. He concludes with a discussion of current theories about the origin of the solar system.
