This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book Decontextualized Skill cueing

Download or read book Decontextualized Skill cueing written by Kym Yvonne Atwood and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overarm throw is a difficult multi-limb task because the overarm throw requires synchronized dexterity of the entire body. Research has determined that the inability to throw hinders children's participation in physical activities. The dynamic systems theory, which describes the interactions and processes that manipulate development, framed this quantitative study to investigate the effects of overarm throw instruction without a ball accompanied by verbal, directional cueing set to music with counts (decontextualized skill-cueing). A repeatedmeasures analysis of variance analyzed the process scores of the overarm throw for accuracy across three periods for 78 girls and boys in kindergarten and first and second grades. Data analysis found the main effect comparing the genders was significant, indicating a difference in the process scores between genders across the three periods. Descriptive statistics indicated the means for both sets of participants gradually increased after the pretest through the posttest and the retention test with the highest mean at retention test; yet, the means for the female participants were not as high on any test as were the means for the male participants. Further, the main effect between the control and treatment groups was also significant. Both groups' process scores increased over time from pretest to posttest; however, the control group's scores decreased during the retention test, as evidenced by the means and standard deviations. The study upholds the dynamic systems theory constructs that posit the body's multiple physiological components combine to create over-time skill variability in the body relative to the task, individual, and environment.

Book Sport Fun and Enjoyment

Download or read book Sport Fun and Enjoyment written by Ian Wellard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport, Fun and Enjoyment explores the pleasurable aspects of sport within the context of everyday recreational and competitive physical activities. While much recent work has focused on the relationships between physical activity, health and wellbeing, much less attention has been paid to pleasure and fun, key aspects of our engagement with sport but not so easy to measure in terms of specific outcomes. By offering a critical exploration of what can be constituted as ‘fun’ in a sporting context, this book reveals the complex ways in which individuals approach sport and engage with it throughout the life course. The book considers the importance of pleasure and fun as a factor in our initial, formative experiences of sport activity, and as a factor in participation and continued participation. It explores the nature of fun as an embodied experience which incorporates a multitude of social, psychological and physiological components, and as a subjective experience which cannot be fully explained through simplistic binary formulations of pleasure and pain. Drawing on a wide research literature and original empirical research with children and adults, the book outlines a new theoretical framework for thinking about pleasure and fun in sport, highlighting the contrasting ways in which sport and physical activity is experienced and the interplay between individual and social contexts. Sport, Fun and Enjoyment is important reading for anybody with an interest in physical education, youth sport, the sociology of sport, physical activity and health, sport development or sport policy.

Book Teaching Physical Education

Download or read book Teaching Physical Education written by Muska Mosston and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive source for the groundbreaking ideas of the "Spectrum of Teaching Styles" introduced by Mosston and Ashworth and developed during 35 years in the field. This book offers teachers a foundation for understanding the decision-making structures that exist in all teaching/learning environments and for recognizing the variables that increase effectiveness while teaching physical education. In this thoroughly revised and streamlined edition, all chapters have been updated to include hundreds of real-world examples, concise charts, practical forms, and concrete suggestions for "deliberate teaching" so that teachers can understand their classrooms' flow of events, analyze decision structures, implement adjustments that are appropriate for particular classroom situations, and deliberately combine styles to achieve effective variations. As in prior editions, individual chapters describe the anatomy of the decision structure as it relates to teachers and learners, the objectives (O-T-L-O) of each style, and the application of each style to various activities and educational goals. For physical education teachers.

Book The Effect of Weight Bearing Through the Upper Extremity on Overhead Throwing Accuracy Among 3 to 4 Year Old Children

Download or read book The Effect of Weight Bearing Through the Upper Extremity on Overhead Throwing Accuracy Among 3 to 4 Year Old Children written by Anne E. Harwood and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the kinesthetic effect of weight bearing through the upper extremity on the acquisition of the gross motor skill of overhand throwing among 3 to 4 year old children. SUBJECTS: Forty-one 3 to 4 year old children, who were enrolled at local nursery schools or developmental centers, participated in this study. Exclusion criteria included: motor or sensory trauma to the upper extremity, shoulder problems, or developmental and learning disabilities. Parental consent was required. METHODS: Each subject was weighed and randomly assigned a weight bearing status (weight bearing or nonweight bearing group). Hand preference was determined. Each subject performed 1 warm up and 10 preliminary overhand throws. The distance from the landing site of the ball to the center of the target was measured for each throw. The weight bearing group was then placed in a modified push up position for 1 minute over a bolster with 2535% of their body weight translated through their forearms as measured by a digital scale. The nonweight bearing group sat for 1 minute. Each group then threw 8 times and the process was repeated two more times for a total of 24 throws and 3 minutes of weight bearing or sitting. Each group then sat for 5 minutes and concluded with 10 final throws to measure retention of the throwing accuracy. ANALYSES: A 2x5 factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test the effects of weight bearing on throwing accuracy. Secondary ANOVAs were run to determine the effects of age and gender. An alpha level of .05 was used to test for significance in each analyses. RESULTS: The mean distance from the center of the target for the weight bearing group decreased from a pretest mean of 33.7 cm + 12.6 to a posttest mean of 30.0 cm 2 12.3. The nonweight bearing group increased from a pretest mean of 33.5 cm 2 12.9 to a posttest mean of 35.0 cm + 16.4. The primary and all secondary ANOVAs revealed no statistically significant differences in throwing accuracy between weight bearing and nonweight bearing groups. A post-study power analysis indicated that the effect of weight bearing on throwing accuracy was medium-large (f=.37), and that the study had 62% power to detect significant differences. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The current study supported previous literature in showing the positive effects of weight bearing through the upper extremity on motor performance. Clinicians should be cautious when applying the results of this study as statistical significance was not demonstrated, however, the results may aid in the development of quality treatment for individuals with upper extremity motor dysfunctions.

Book Relative Effectiveness of Three Instructional Strategies on the Learning of an Overarm Throw for Force

Download or read book Relative Effectiveness of Three Instructional Strategies on the Learning of an Overarm Throw for Force written by Deborah Lee Adams and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the relative effectiveness of three instructional strategies on the learning of an overarm throw among preadolescent females. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of the following instructional strategies: a correct model supplemented with verbal cues, a learning model supplemented with verbal cues, and verbal cues only. The performance outcome, the quality of the motor reproduction, and the accuracy of the cognitive representation of the skill were measured to elucidate the effectiveness of the instructional strategies. A pictorial-arrangement test and a cognitive recognition test of correct form were used to describe the quality of the cognitive representation. The performance of an overarm throw was evaluated using both a behavioral analysis and biomechanical techniques to provide information about form and outcome. All groups were tested on four occasions, prior to each day of a three day instructional strategy intervention and two days after instructional intervention. A 3 X 4 (Instructional Strategy X Test Session) repeated measures DM MANOVA incorporated the dependent variables: overarm throwing form score, pictorial-arrangement test score, and a dynamic cognitive recognition score. The results of the repeated measures DM MANOVA revealed a significant test session main effect only (Wilks Lambda=.226, F(9,25)=9.40, p
