Book Lifelong Learning for Tourism

Download or read book Lifelong Learning for Tourism written by Violet V. Cuffy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the middle of the last century tourism has demonstrated almost continual growth, with international tourist arrivals now recorded in excess of one billion per annum. Given the global socio-economic significance of tourism, it is imperative to develop educational opportunities for those working in tourism-related industries. These opportunities should fulfil the changing needs of both industry, travellers, and the learners themselves. While the concept of lifelong learning in the tourism industry plays an important role, it has received little academic attention to date. This book provides a theoretical overview of lifelong learning for tourism, exploring its history, practice, and conceptualization. It demonstrates the importance of lifelong learning for tourism from a variety of perspectives, drawing on educational, industry, policy, and socio-economic insights. The book explores managerial and political implications, critical issues, best practice examples, and draws on a range of international case studies to demonstrate theory in practice. Finally, it offers a conceptual framework for future curriculum approaches. This book will be of interest to students, scholars, and practitioners of tourism studies, hospitality, business and management, and international development. It will also appeal to those interested in adult education, vocational training, professional development, and pedagogy.

Book Comparison of Student Perceptions of Classroom Instruction

Download or read book Comparison of Student Perceptions of Classroom Instruction written by Mary Jo Garcia Biggs and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article reports the results of a project that examined student perceptions of the psychosocial learning environment in a distance education classroom. The study utilized a survey instrument, Distance Education Learning Environments Survey (DELES) that was distributed as a pre-test/post-test to three sections of the same course taught in three distinct formats: traditional classroom instruction, distance learning, and hybrid (partially on-line/partially face-to-face). The DELES survey is a web-based tool specifically designed to assess the learning environment using a standardized, validated instrument. At the beginning of the project, the DELES-Preferred was administered to the three pilot groups. It measures the perception of the "actual" environment, perceptions of the preferred environment, or the "ideal" learning environment of the students. In addition, a brief overview of the DELES instrument is described as well as the implications of the research project findings. Project results, based on the DELES administration, indicate that "Instructor Support" was rated highest by the students enrolled in the course taught in the traditional manner (4.68 mean) closely followed by the Hybrid course (4.66 mean) while the course taught totally at a distance averaged a 3.62 mean. However, "Student Interaction and Collaboration" averaged higher scores in the course taught in the Hybrid manner (4.23) followed by the traditional course (3.97) and then the distance course (3.12). Specific scales of "Personal Relevance," "Authentic Learning," "Active Learning," "Student Autonomy" and "Satisfaction" (scale of affect) are further addressed in the article.

Book Exploring Students Perceptions of Learning and Satisfaction with On line Learning to Understand Their Pedagogical Experiences at a Private Government University

Download or read book Exploring Students Perceptions of Learning and Satisfaction with On line Learning to Understand Their Pedagogical Experiences at a Private Government University written by Robert L. Daugherty and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extent to which students in the Department of Defense (DoD) are satisfied with the content and quality of on-line learning at the Private Government University (PGU) is not clearly understood. The PGU is the component of DoD chartered by the law, The Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) of 1990, with delivering instruction and learning content to the Defense Acquisition Workforce (DAW) as part of the acquisition professional certification process. The purpose of this qualitative methods study was to describe and analyze the student perceptions of their satisfaction with on-line learning pedagogical experiences at PGU. This study used as its foundation Moore's (1993) theory of transactional distance and its four interaction components: student-content, faculty-student, student-student, and student character. The study was designed to use the experiences and words of the participants to not only determine the findings of the study, but also to inform the leadership and faculty of the PGU for awareness and potential curriculum improvement. The results of the study related the student perceptions about on-line learning at PGU. Of note, the perceptions and reported preferences did not vary significantly due to demographic variables. There was significant alignment on the prioritization of Moore's interactions, with majority agreement on the more significant interactions. It is important for the university administration to commission more studies in the near future to examine interactions between students in the on-line program. The results of the study demonstrate that course design, interactions between learners and teachers, the personality of students, and interactions between learners themselves all play a role in determining the success and happiness of learners in the on-line environment. Participants want to see improvements in the way courses are designed and delivered, including instructor support. Book Effect of a Cooperative Learning Environment on Students Attitudes Relative to the Accounting Course at Blaine High School

Download or read book Effect of a Cooperative Learning Environment on Students Attitudes Relative to the Accounting Course at Blaine High School written by Rachel A. Bausman and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a call for change regarding secondary accounting curriculum by the Accounting Education Change Commission in hopes of developing active learning for students utilizing case studies in the classroom (Libby, 1991). Teachers need to enhance their conventional teaching techniques from the traditional format for students to be able to develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. When students can think critically, they will develop a deeper understanding of the content and will be developing the 21st century skills required in the workplace. The purpose of this study was to gain the perceptions of students' attitudes towards accounting during and after the instruction where cooperative learning strategies were implemented. Permission was obtained from 26 parents and students from one classroom at Blaine High School. A pre- and post-survey was used to compare the student perceptions and confidence after the cooperative learning, and a paired t-test was used to analyze the data. The Blaine accounting program is taught by a licensed/certified business and marketing teacher and the results of the study showed a slight increase in student confidence about completing the activities after the cooperative learning took place. The results demonstrated beneficial outcomes when cooperative learning is utilized in the classroom setting.

Book excerpt: "Internships: Theory and Practice" focuses on the history, theory, value, design, administration, and evaluation of professional internships as an educational experience for college students. Internships are guided, pre-professional experiences that combine academic and professional components as a managed transition to professional careers. Touted by many as an educational innovation for the 21st century, internships (or experiential learning, or apprenticeships, as they once were called) have been a staple of professional preparation for centuries, dating back at least to the earliest documentation in the Middle Ages and no doubt far beyond that.Charles Sides and Ann Mrvica trace this history through primary sources to explore the development of internship experiences over the past 800 years, create an introduction to the topic of internships, and provide a foundation for modern college-corporation partnerships in professional education and training. The authors present specific guidelines and discussions on issues important to corporations, in terms of providing for internship experiences; issues important to colleges, in terms of designing and evaluating internships; and issues important to students, in terms of participating in and learning from internships.

Book Student Perceptions Of Quality Learning Experiences In Online Learning Environments

Download or read book Student Perceptions Of Quality Learning Experiences In Online Learning Environments written by Jamie Rhoads and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the higher education undergraduate student body and the structure of course offerings have drastically changed. As we continue to transition from emergency remote courses to quality online learning experiences, we must respond thoughtfully as well as empirically. The purpose of this study was to examine quality learning experiences as perceived by students in online courses and use the new knowledge generated to add to current research and enhance practice. Through qualitative data collection, I intended to answer the following research questions: (a) What do students perceive as quality learning experiences in their online courses? and (b) How can understanding the student experience and perception of quality in their online learning environments improve course development procedures in online courses? Eight participants were interviewed regarding their experiences of quality in online courses. Results of the study determined Barriers, Interaction, Structure, and Community are the themes that students identify when defining quality online learning experiences. It was also indicated that students were more satisfied with their high quality online learning experiences. Implications and recommendations for improved practice and action steps are also provided. The researcher contends that these findings demonstrate the need to systematically build quality into online courses, which will offer students better learning experiences.
