Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to compare the ability of the Feedback-with-Bypass (FWB) and the Derivative-Switching (DS) flight control system filters to prevent PIO during actuator rate limiting, and the filters' effects on aircraft handling qualities. This comparison was conducted in three steps: computer simulation, ground simulation in the Large Amplitude Multimode Aerospace Research Simulator (LAMARS), and flight tests conducted in the Variable Stability In-flight Simulator Test Aircraft (VISTA). During computer simulation, the FWB filter better reduced the phase lag and prevented sustained or divergent oscillations during the closed-loop analysis. During both ground simulation and flight tests, the FWB filter was more effective at preventing divergent PIO and improving handling qualities. Overall the FWB filter performed better during all tests.

By the close of the century it had developed into a global religious phenomenon claiming millions of adherents. As the most common form of contemporary prophecy belief, dispensationalism has played a major role in transforming religion, politics, and pop culture in the U.S. and throughout the world. Despite its importance and continuing appeal, scholars often reduce dispensationalism to an anti-modern, apocalyptic, and literalist branch of Protestant fundamentalism. In Dispensational Modernism, B. M. Pietsch argues that, on the contrary, the allure of dispensational thinking can best be understood through the lens of technological modernism. Pietsch shows that between 1870 and 1920 dispensationalism grew out of the popular fascination with applying engineering methods -- such as quantification and classification -- to the interpretation of texts and time. At the heart of this new network of texts, scholars, institutions, and practices was the lightning-rod Bible teacher C. I. Shimmy and brake-induced vibrations can lead to accidents due to excessive wear and shortened life of gear parts and contribute to pilot and passenger discomfort. To increase understanding of these problems, a literature survey was performed. The major focus is on work from the last ten years. Some older publications are included to understand the longevity of the problem and the background from earlier researchers. The literature survey includes analyses, testing, modeling, and simulation of aircraft landing gear; and experimental validation and characterization of shimmy and brake-induced vibration of aircraft landing gear. The paper presents an overview of the problem, background information, and a history of landing gear dynamics problems and solutions. Based on the survey an assessment and recommendations of the most critically needed enhancements to the state of the art will be presented. The status of Langley work contributing to this activity will be given.
