Book excerpt: Multiple Regression was used to examine the relationship between the principal's leadership styles (Independent Variable) and growth in the Performance Index (Dependent Variable). The 19 principals' dominant leadership style was transformational leadership. The regression model failed to be significant; therefore, based on the data, leadership as measured by the MLQ-5X is not a good predictor for growth. The relationship on school leadership and growth was not significantly substantial. Although there was no predictive relationship, the data verify that the 19 schools that have shown growth had transformational leaders. Future research suggests a larger sample size to determine if leadership styles have a relationship to student growth.

American students continue to fall behind their counterparts mathematically in developing countries. The U.S. Department of Education (2009) warned that the current state of math performance “shortchanges our students’ future and endangers our nation's prosperity and security” (p. 26).Test results from the 2016 New York State Education Department (NYSED), for example, reported that 889,296 students took the Common Core Math State Exam last spring. The New York City (NYC) students who met the math proficiency level by ethnic subgroups were: Asian/Pacific Islander (67.2%), White (56.7 %), American Indian/Alaska Native (32.2%), Hispanic (24.3%), and Black (20%). These disproportionate scores reflect an objective picture of the persistent mathematics achievement gap in America. The low statistics about student achievement are not a new phenomenon, as year after year, the academic performance metrics consistently show thousands of middle school students who are underperforming on the state mathematics exams. The statistics consistently highlight that most students who fail to meet the expected academic standards are African American, Latino and are from a low socioeconomic background (NYSED 2016). There have been numerous legislative reforms such as No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), and Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) enacted to try and close the achievement gap. According to Williams, Kirst, and Haertel (2010), the gap in middle school for mathematics gets wider, and this is concerning because middle school math is an indicator for success in high school, college, and beyond. Principals and their school communities search for instructional practices they can implement to increase student achievement with middle school math. This research study, Strategies Principals in New York City Public High-Needs Middle Schools Use to Increase Student Achievement in Mathematics, can be used to guide the work of improving student outcome in math. The research design for this study was quantitative and the instrument used was an electronic survey, that was emailed to middle school principals. There were 45 questions, the first 11 pertained to questions about the demographics of the principals; the other 34 questions were about math strategies principals should use to impact student achievement in mathematics. The sample size was 100 middle school principals, 73 of them responded. The data collected from the responses were analyzed using the statistical analysis software SPSS version 24. The findings of this study showed that the following practices when implemented by the principal had a significant association with student achievement: The principal hiring of effective Math Lead Teachers, students grappling with assignments that are common- core aligned and on the level of the state exams and teachers writing responsive lesson plans to address students’ misconceptions.

Despite years of educational reform efforts, America remains a Nation at Risk (1983). Towards the turn of the 21st century, America was well into it's third attempt to remedy one of its' major maladies, scholastic insufficiency. In the midst of schools failing to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), decreasing graduation rates, and increasing teacher turn-over rates, stands the school leader. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) mandates, Race to the Top dollars, and other numerous policies attempt to provide incentives for regions and leaders who change failing schools into achieving academic institutions. The paths to these incentives are separated by achievement gaps across the nation. This study attempts to conquer the quest that many school leaders have traveled by researching a change model that may embody the recipe for turning around failing schools. The purpose of this study was to research the experiences of four middle school principals, 2 female and 2 male, who utilized the processes and procedures embedded in the Four Dimensions of Principal Leadership (Green, 2010) to change their failing schools in to schools with a progressing status. The voices of these school leaders were captured by the researcher through three individual interviews, three focus groups, and artifact collections. The study uses case study analysis and phenomenological research along with other qualitative methodologies to answer the question, " What meaning to do school leaders in under achieving schools ascribe to the Four Dimensions of Leadership as they engage in the change process?" Findings of this study include eighteen major themes that surround the four dimensions. The first of the major themes supported the first dimension, understanding self and others. Theories connected with this dimension include, Hersey and Blanchard's (1960) Situational Leadership and Greenleaf's (1970) Servant Leadership. Second, it was found that the participants used the next dimension, understanding the complexities of organizational life, majorly to establish congruent visions of the change process by the internal and external populations. Theories connected with this dimension include Fullan's (1999) Change Theory and Senge's (1990) Systems Theory. The participants used the third dimension, building bridges through relationships, to stay connected with internal and external populations. Finally, the fourth dimension, utilizing leadership's best practices , was used to build a social network amongst the participants. In response to the turn-around challenge set forth by policy makers, the findings in this study reveal specific methods involving the Four Dimensions of Leadership that middle school level principals used to change the status of their schools. Ultimately, the findings within this study help to validate the Four Dimensions Leadership Model as a valued model for change in our 21st century schools. .

The role of the principal has changed and requires different skills to succeed in the 21st century. However, there are few studes that focues on revealing the perspective of a principal who applied a change theory in a school setting and positively transformed a low performing school into a high performing school. The purpose of this qualitative autoethnography was to study a principal's leadership in a middle school culture as the principal attempted to transform the school from 2005-2008.The leadership framework for the study was the Four Dimensions of Principal Leadership (Green, 2010) and the pratices, processes, and procedures embedded within the dimensions used to transform the low performing school into a high performing school. A document/artifact analysis was conducted to reveal leadership practices, processes, and procedures the principal used over time. The results of the document analysis indictaed the principal utilized knowledge of the Four Dimensions of Principal Leadership and identiied nineteen major themes that suround the four dimensions and eight practices that include leadership of the principal, collaboration of the faculty and staff, having high expectations for all students, structuring the school ina nurturing manner, using data to make instructional decisions, aligning the curriculum and using appropriate student interventions, implementing a focused professional development plan for all personnel, and engaging the parent and the community in the teaching and learning process. Analysis of data sources indicated that Red Middle School was transformed because the principal changed waht was taught, how it was taught, and what was expected of students.The culture of the school evolved through a process of implementing the Nurturing Schools Inventory (Green, 2010) which included building relationships with the students, community, staff, and the district. The implications of this study can assist aspiring principals in understanding the complex nature of implementing an effective change model to transform a school in the 21st century. .
