Book From the Classroom to the Heart An Examination of the Doctrine of Entire Sanctification

This book was released on 2021-02-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several decades the author has taught college courses on theology. He has found that students reared in Wesleyan churches show confusion as to what constitutes a sin, carnal trait or temptation, and labor under the erroneous idea that somehow John Wesley invented the teachings of Christian perfection. He first provides a historical overview of the various streams of religious teachings that shaped the theology of Wesley from the ancient Church Fathers up to his own time. Then he addresses some of the erroneous views of sin that are circulating in contemporary preaching and teaching. He considers "sins of ignorance" and ethical decision-making before dealing with the differences between the two works of grace. He examines common carnal traits of the unsanctified and provides some instruction and illustrations to help readers deal with them. Employing First Thessalonians he directs the reader's attention to biblical examples of the two steps involved in the process of entire sanctification. Along the way he considers aspects that trouble believers: how competition and legitimate feelings of accomplishment might affect one's walk with the Lord and influence with others; the various "fillings" of the Holy Spirit that appear in both the Old and New Testaments, using Samson as an illustration; the three different kinds of fillings by the Spirit in Scripture; the various degrees of perfection found throughout Scripture; emotions and feelings and the critical role they play in one's spiritual life; the road to maturity; current misconceptions about entire sanctification; what perfect love won't and will do; what actually transpired in the Upper Room at Pentecost, the events at Samaria and the house of Cornelius- all these important topics are analyzed and discussed. The book ends with specific counsel on how the child of God can find wonderful deliverance from the carnal mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harald Lindstrom's classic study of John Wesley's doctrine of sanctification remains perhaps the most accurate and comprehensive description we have of the theology of the founder of Methodism. Its accuracy stems from the fact that Lindstrom relied principally on Wesley's sermons to define his understanding of scriptural Christianity. Its comprehensiveness reflects the fact that John Wesley saw, and spent his lifetime explaining, that the promise of salvation was the central theme of biblical theology and that the experience of sanctifying grace was the essence of salvation.

Download or read book A Plain Account of Christian Perfection written by John Wesley and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-17 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Plain Account of Christian Perfection by John Wesley is about the theory of perfection according to Christian theology. Excerpt: "1. WHAT I purpose in the following pages is, to give a plain and distinct account of the steps by which I was led, during the course of many years, to embrace the doctrine of Christian Perfection. This I owe to the serious part of mankind; those who desire to know all the truth as it is in Jesus. And these only are concerned with questions of this kind. To these I would nakedly declare the thing as it is, endeavoring all along to show, from one period to another, both what I thought, and why I thought so."

Book excerpt: Congregations are made up of people with all sorts of theologies. Pastor Mike Slaughter even says that these can stand in the way of the church’s mission of social and personal holiness. But most people do not adopt a theology on purpose, mostly they merely breathe in the prevailing cultural air. The theology "de jour" seems to be Calvinist, with its emphasis on “the elect” and “other worldly salvation.” In fact, there is so much Calvinism saturating the culture, that some do not even know there is an alternative way of thinking about their faith. They don’t know where to go to find a viable option; they don’t even know the key words to search Google. So people are left thinking like Calvinists but living with a desire to change the world, offering grace and hope to hurting people in mission and ministry—loving the least, the last, and the lost. In other words, they are living like Wesleyans. This book shows what Calvinist and Wesleyans actually believe about human responsibility, salvation, the universality of God’s grace, holy living through service, and the benefits of small group accountability--and how that connects to how people can live. Calvinists and Wesleyans are different, and by knowing the difference, people will not only see the other benefits of Wesleyan theology but will be inspired to learn more. By knowing who they are as faithful people of God, they will be motivated to reach out in mission with renewed vigor. And they won’t be obstacles to grace and holiness, but they can be better disciples and advocates for Christ through service in this world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley (1703-1791) is the chief architect and source of inspiration to the teaching commonly referred to as Christian perfection. Among his many publications, the book that best summarizes his teachings on holiness is A Plain Account of Christian Perfection, as believed and taught by the Reverend Mr. John Wesley, from the year 1725 to the year 1777. For many years this timeless classic has been reproduced in various formats. Now, for the first time, John Wesley's 'A Plain Account of Christian Perfection' is being offered in a definitive Annotated Edition by Mark K. Olson. This edition is volume one in a projected three volume series. The Annotated Edition offers the following: · The entire text has been divided into chapters and verses for detailed study and cross-referencing. · The introduction examines in detail when and why Wesley wrote A Plain Account. · The verse by verse commentary discusses the history and background behind the text, offering unsurpassed explanation of Wesley's doctrine of perfect love. · Five end notes address Wesley's early doctrinal development, the impact of Aldersgate on his perfection doctrine, many testimonies of attaining perfection, and other relevant material from early Methodism. · Over 150 quotations from Wesley's sermons, writings, and letters offer unlimited clarification to his views on perfection. · The insights of many Wesley scholars are included: Albert Outler, Randy Maddox, Kenneth Collins, William Greathouse, Thomas Oden, Harold Lindstrom, Stephen Gunter, H. Ray Dunning, Theodore Runyon, plus many others. · A timeline details every event in Wesley's lifetime corresponding to A Plain Account. · Several exhaustive indexes are included: scripture, annotation, subject, author, Wesley quotations, and two synonym indexes from Wesley's Journal and A Plain Account. · The Essential Reading Section further empowers the study of Wesley's theology of perfection. Included are: o Twenty key sermons, along with their dates and locations in Wesley's Works (both the Jackson and Bicentennial editions). · Wesley's most important writings on perfection, listing their date and location in his Works. · 250 letters relevant to his theology of perfection. The index includes their date and location in Wesley's Works, with a brief description of their contents. Two additional volumes are planned in the series. John Wesley's Theology of Perfection will offer specialized studies for those wanting to dig deeper into Wesley's theology of perfection. The third volume, John Wesley's Doctrine of Christian Perfection, will present in systematic format every facet of Wesley's views on perfection. The projected release for both volumes is 2006 and 2007. Together, these three volumes will present one of the most thorough and exhaustive studies ever done on Wesley's most beloved, yet, most controversial doctrine.

Book From Unity to Diversity

Download or read book From Unity to Diversity written by Gerhard Mielke and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current diversity within the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) reflects discontinuity with D.S. Warner's original doctrine of sanctification, but continuity with the claim of non-creedalism. At the outset of the Church of God movement, there was conformity and general agreement with the teaching of entire sanctification as Warner, the chief pioneer of the movement, understood it, but this has diversified into a broad spectrum of understandings. The claim of non-creedalism has always been made by the movement. It was held to be a result of sanctification. Warner believed that if people became truly sanctified, then united by the Holy Spirit in love, they would drop all formal creeds and adhere to the Bible as their rule of faith. Since the understanding of sanctification within the movement is no longer uniform and yet the claim to be non-creedal remains strong, the concept of non-creedalism has stood the test of time. This dissertationi traces the trajectory of the teaching of entire sanctification and non-creedalism in the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) and those groups that trace their theological roots back to Daniel S. Warner, the principal pioneer of the Church of God movement. The study highlights the history of the tension between the claim of non-creedalism and the desire to impose a doctrine of sanctification. Besides tracing the changes that took place over the one hundred and forty year history of the Church of God movement, the study also summarizes the present spectrum of thought. From a cultural-linguistic viewpoint this study examines the cultural grammar of sanctification to see if objectives are still intact, even though some of the language describing holiness may have changed. Much unity still exists among the diversity. Non-creedalism is stronger in practice today than at the inception of the movement. The teaching of entire sanctification, also referred to as Perfect Love, Christian Perfection, or holiness, has changed over time, not only within the Church of God, but also within the broader holiness community. Today's assessment of John Wesley's original view of Christian Perfection and the variations of the understandings among current Wesleyan scholars are highlighted as well, placing the history and views of the Church of God within the scope of the broader evangelical community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wesley's View of Entire Sanctification His opinion as to what constitutes Christian perfection underwent no change, although he had occasion to modify a few expressions in which he stated the doctrine. He saw clearly from this time that all grace, even in its highest de grees, is received by faith; andin this he never wavered. But he was weak in the faith, and a babe in Christ, as all young converts are. Doubts and fears crowded Upon him. He found it necessary to sit at the feet of those who had more perfect knowledge of the way of faith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
