Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Performance Analysis of Multiprocessor Interconnection Networks Using a Burst traffic Model

Download or read book Performance Analysis of Multiprocessor Interconnection Networks Using a Burst traffic Model written by Stephen Wilson Turner and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the development and use of a performance analysis methodology suitable for use in the evaluation of multiprocessor interconnection networks. The study is grounded in a detailed evaluation of the Cedar multiprocessor. Using characteristics of the behavior exhibited by the benchmarks studied on that system, a burst-traffic model is developed. The performance predictions of the model for adaptive and oblivious virtual-channel routers used in a 2D torus are compared to those of an open-loop random-traffic model, and significant differences are shown to exist. The design of a novel adaptive router, the Shunt router, is proposed. Proofs of its freedom from deadlock and livelock are provided, showing its suitability for use in the construction of a shared-memory multiprocessor. The burst traffic model is used to drive simple versions of the Shunt router and compare its performance to those of the virtual-channel routers discussed previously. The Shunt router is shown to provide a suitable base for explorations of alterations to the routing algorithms and size of buffers within the router, due to its simplicity of structure. The Shunt router is then augmented with a variety of adaptive routing algorithms. The performance of these algorithms, as well as two oblivious routing algorithms, is evaluated. The results show that structure in oblivious routing is important, and several adaptive routing schemes perform equally well. The Shunt router is also used to evaluate the impact of queue sizes on performance, as well as the interaction between queue lengths and adaptivity. Finally, a traffic-throttling network interface is used, with results that show it is primarily useful in cases of limited router buffering. Analytic performance bounds are developed, and used to place the improvements due to adaptive routing into perspective. These bounds are derived from considerations of the systems topology and the structure of the burst-traffic model. Minimum latency, bisection-width, and a complex mean value analysis model are developed, and each is shown to have utility in different areas of performance prediction and comparison. Given the context of the performance bounds, the adaptive routers are shown to achieve a significant percentage of the potential performance improvement.

Book Principles and Practices of Interconnection Networks

Download or read book Principles and Practices of Interconnection Networks written by William James Dally and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-03-06 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest challenges faced by designers of digital systems is optimizing the communication and interconnection between system components. Interconnection networks offer an attractive and economical solution to this communication crisis and are fast becoming pervasive in digital systems. Current trends suggest that this communication bottleneck will be even more problematic when designing future generations of machines. Consequently, the anatomy of an interconnection network router and science of interconnection network design will only grow in importance in the coming years. This book offers a detailed and comprehensive presentation of the basic principles of interconnection network design, clearly illustrating them with numerous examples, chapter exercises, and case studies. It incorporates hardware-level descriptions of concepts, allowing a designer to see all the steps of the process from abstract design to concrete implementation. Case studies throughout the book draw on extensive author experience in designing interconnection networks over a period of more than twenty years, providing real world examples of what works, and what doesn't. Tightly couples concepts with implementation costs to facilitate a deeper understanding of the tradeoffs in the design of a practical network. A set of examples and exercises in every chapter help the reader to fully understand all the implications of every design decision.

Book Parallel Computer Routing and Communication

Download or read book Parallel Computer Routing and Communication written by Sudhakar Yalamanchili and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workshop was a continuation of the PCRCW ’94 workshop that focused on issues in parallel communication and routing in support of parallel processing. The workshop series provides a forum for researchers and designers to exchange ideas with respect to challenges and issues in supporting communication for high-performance parallel computing. Within the last few years we have seen the scope of interconnection network technology expand beyond traditional multiprocessor systems to include high-availability clusters and the emerging class of system area networks. New application domains are creating new requirements for interconnection network services, e.g., real-time video, on-line data mining, etc. The emergence of quality-of-service guarantees within these domains challenges existing approaches to interconnection network design. In the recent past we have seen the emphasis on low-latency software layers, the application of multicomputer interconnection technology to distributed shared-memory multiprocessors and LAN interconnects, and the shift toward the use of commodity clusters and standard components. There is a continuing evolution toward powerful and inexpensive network interfaces, and low-cost, high-speed routers and switches from commercial vendors. The goal is to address the above issues in the context of networks of workstations, multicomputers, distributed shared-memory multiprocessors, and traditional tightly-coupled multiprocessor interconnects. The PCRCW ’97 workshop presented 20 regular papers and two short papers covering a range of topics dealing with modern interconnection networks. It was hosted by the Georgia Institute of Technology and sponsored by the Atlanta Chapter of the IEEE Computer Society.

Book Parallel Processing Algorithms For GIS

Download or read book Parallel Processing Algorithms For GIS written by Richard Healey and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last fifteen years GIS has become a fully-fledged technology, deployed across a range of application areas. However, although computer advances in performance appear to continue unhindered, data volumes and the growing sophistication of analysis procedures mean that performance will increasingly become a serious concern in GIS. Parallel computing offers a potential solution. However, traditional algorithms may not run effectively in a parallel environment, so utilization of parallel technology is not entirely straightforward. This groundbreaking book examines some of the current strategies facing scientists and engineers at this crucial interface of parallel computing and GIS.; The book begins with an introduction to the concepts, terminology and techniques of parallel processing, with particular reference to GIS. High level programming paradigms and software engineering issues underlying parallel software developments are considered and emphasis is given to designing modular reusable software libraries. The book continues with problems in designing parallel software for GIS applications, potential vector and raster data structures and details the algorithmic design for some major GIS operations. An implementation case study is included, based around a raster generalization problem, which illustrates some of the principles involved. Subsequent chapters review progress in parallel database technology in a GIS environment and the use of parallel techniques in various application areas, dealing with both algorithmic and implementation issues.; "Parallel Processing Algorithms for GIS" should be a useful text for a new generation of GIS professionals whose principal concern is the challenge of embracing major computer performance enhancements via parallel computing. Similarly, it should be an important volume for parallel computing professionals who are increasingly aware that GIS offers a major application domain for their technology.

Book On Shortest Disjoint Paths and Hamiltonian Cycles in Some Interconnection Networks

Download or read book On Shortest Disjoint Paths and Hamiltonian Cycles in Some Interconnection Networks written by Zaid Hussain and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parallel processors are classified into two classes: shared-memory multiprocessors and distributed- memory multiprocessors. In the shared-memory system, processors communicate through a common memory unit. However, in the distributed multiprocessor system, each processor has its own memory unit and the communications among the processors are performed through an interconnection network. Thus, the interconnection topology plays an important role in the performance of these parallel systems. Recently, some new classes of interconnection networks, referred as Gaussian and Eisenstein- Jacobi networks, have been introduced. In this dissertation, we study the problem of finding the shortest node disjoint paths in the Gaussian and the Eisenstein-Jacobi networks. Moreover, we also describe how to generate edge disjoint Hamiltonian cycles in Eisenstein- Jacobi and Generalized Hypercube networks. Node disjoint paths are paths between any given source and destination nodes such that the paths have no common nodes except the endpoints. Similarly, edge disjoint Hamiltonian cycles are cycles in a given graph where each node is visited once and returns to the starting node and every edge is in at most one cycle.
