Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer. This book was released on 1988-10-31 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.

Book Flow Injection Spectrophotometric Determination of Formaldehyde Using New Color Reaction

Download or read book Flow Injection Spectrophotometric Determination of Formaldehyde Using New Color Reaction written by Sara Keiko Murase Fernández and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formaldehyde (HCHO) is the most common air pollutant of the aldehyde family. It is known to be a toxic and carcinogenic compound present in both residential indoor and industrial environments. Exposition to formaldehyde in higher concentrations (over 0,1 ppmv) can cause well-known effects as irritation of the eyes and upper respiratory tract, headache, nausea, difficulty in breathing, allergic skin reactions, among others. Rapid and reliable methods are still required for the determination of formaldehyde, so the objective of this project is to develop an affordable, cost-effective and easy-to-use flow based spectrophotometric method for the measurement of formaldehyde (HCHO) in liquid samples. This Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) provides advantages as reproducibility, simplicity, low cost, flexibility and high sensitivity that previous batch-wise assays didn't have. Previous research has been carried out to find a suitable chemical basis and referring to previous papers of chemical journals the reaction will be held between hydroxyl ammonium sulfate and the analyte, formaldehyde. After this, a reaction between exceeds of hydroxyl ammonium sulfate, Fe(III) and a ligand will take place. A colored-complex will be produced. To determine the concentration of formaldehyde an indirect analysis is done. The decrease of the colored-complex compound is proportional to the concentration of formaldehyde. The flow-based system will be studied and developed to obtain the optimum work conditions. Studied parameters will be: temperature in reaction coil, length of reaction coils, flow rate, pH of buffer, and concentration of reagents. Under the optimum conditions the calibration curve will be determined. The reliability of the system will be checked by the analysis of industrial waste water that contains formaldehyde and compared to a standard method. As direct application of the system is the analysis of industrial wastewater it will be necessary a study of interference compounds. Results of the study accomplish the prospects above mentioned. The system is a reliable flowbased spectrophotometric method for the easy and rapid determination of the concentration of formaldehyde. Moreover it is a highly sensitive system with high repeatability that has no significant difference in results compared to a standard method.
