This book was released on 1989 with total page 1298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities and Their Vital Systems asks basic questions about the longevity, utility, and nature of urban infrastructures; analyzes how they grow, interact, and change; and asks how, when, and at what cost they should be replaced. Among the topics discussed are problems arising from increasing air travel and airport congestion; the adequacy of water supplies and waste treatment; the impact of new technologies on construction; urban real estate values; and the field of "telematics," the combination of computers and telecommunications that makes money machines and national newspapers possible.

Book Computational Mechanics 95

Download or read book Computational Mechanics 95 written by S.N. Atluri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 3181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AI!, in the earlier conferences (Tokyo, 1986; Atlanta, 1988, Melbourne, 1991; and Hong Kong, 1992) the response to the call for presentations at ICES-95 in Hawaii has been overwhelming. A very careful screening of the extended abstracts resulted in about 500 paper being accepted for presentation. Out of these, written versions of about 480 papers reached the conference secretariat in Atlanta in time for inclusion in these proceedings. The topics covered at ICES-95 range over the broadest spectrum of computational engineering science. The editors thank the international scientific committee, for their advice and encouragement in making ICES-95 a successful scientific event. Special thanks are expressed to the International Association for Boundary Elements Methods for hosting IABEM-95 in conjunction with ICES-95. The editors here express their deepest gratitude to Ms. Stacy Morgan for her careful handling of a myriad of details of ICES-95, often times under severe time constraints. The editors hope that the readers of this proceedings will find a kaleidoscopic view of computational engineering in the year 1995, as practiced in various parts of the world. Satya N. Book Fracture and Damage in Quasibrittle Structures

Download or read book Fracture and Damage in Quasibrittle Structures written by Z.P. Bazant and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-01-14 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding of failure of quasibrittle materials is of paramount importance in many engineering fields. This subject has become a broad and important field of considerable mathematical complexity, with many competing models and unsolved problems. Attention in this volume focuses on concrete, rock, masonry, toughened ceramics, ice and other quasibrittle materials characterized by the development of large zones of cracking or other microstructural damage, and its localization into major fractures.

Book Dynamics of Heterogeneous Materials

Download or read book Dynamics of Heterogeneous Materials written by Vitali Nesterenko and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with the behavior of essentially nonlinear heterogeneous materials in processes occurring under intense dynamic loading, where microstructural effects play the main role. This book is not an introduction to the dynamic behavior of materials, and general information available in other books is not included. The material herein is presented in a form I hope will make it useful not only for researchers working in related areas, but also for graduate students. I used it successfully to teach a course on the dynamic behavior of materials at the University of California, San Diego. Another course well suited to the topic may be nonlinear wave dynamics in solids, especially the part on strongly nonlinear waves. About 100 problems presented in the book at the end of each chapter will help the reader to develop a deeper understanding of the subject. I tried to follow a few rules in writing this book: (1) To focus on strongly nonlinear phenomena where there is no small parameter with respect to the amplitude of disturbance, including solitons, shock waves, and localized shear. (2) To take into account phenomena sensitive to materials structure, where typical space scale of material parameters (particle size, cell size) are presented in the models or are variable in experimental research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ram accelerators are among the most advanced tools for generating fluid dynamcis data in supersonic reacting systems. They require the combined action of combustion, wave systems and turbulence and are still a serious challenge for physicists and engineers. This book will serve as an introductionary textbook on ram accelerators and gives a thorough overview on research activities, performance modeling and high-pressure detonation dynamics.

Book Dynamic Plasticity

Download or read book Dynamic Plasticity written by Nicolaie D Cristescu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007-02-08 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a self-contained and comprehensive look at the field of dynamic plasticity for researchers and graduates in mechanical engineering. Drawing on the author's long career in the field, the book greatly extends material from the 1967 original edition with the addition of fresh research chapters as well as a full introduction to the elementary theory of plasticity. The coverage of new areas includes a chapter on rocks and soils, the various developments in research on rate type, and novel problems concerning non-homogenous Bingham fluids, such as flow along an inclined slope. Other chapters consider the latest issues in metal working, such as drawing, floating plug, and extrusion. New problems concerning the perforation of plates with high velocity are also included.
