Book A Comparison Between Two Turkish Heroines in Lord Byron s Poetry

Download or read book A Comparison Between Two Turkish Heroines in Lord Byron s Poetry written by Mona Sulaiman Farraj Albalawi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Book demonstrates and examines the similarities of two Turkish heroines in Lord Byron's poetry, Leila in "The Giaour," and, Leila in Don Juan, and asserts that both Leilas are portrayed as passive characters, with no role and no effect on the hero's life. Both heroines are being silenced. Their voice is nowhere to be found in Byron's poetry. Both heroines experience different types of death, one physical as punishment for infidelity, and the other is cultural, erasing her Islamic identity and adopting a western perspective through Western education. The analysis support critics' views of Byron's relationship with the East, that Lord Byron is an "Orientalist" whose portrayal of both Leilas reflects a superior attitude toward the Turks, and reflects an unsympathetic view toward Islam through the repetition of the negative stereotypical images of the Turkish women that existed in his time. While silencing both heroines, Byron plays the role of the benevolent colonist and the western liberator.

The chapters are organized into five sections-'Works', 'Biographical Contexts', 'Literary and Cultural Contexts', 'Afterlives', and 'Reading Byron Now'-that guide readers through the most important issues and frameworks for interpreting Byron. 'Works' presents original readings of Byron's key works and many of his lesser-known ones, giving space to extensive studies of his great epic, Don Juan, and the poem that brought him fame, Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. 'Biographical Contexts' invites readers to consider Byron's life through key themes and patterns. 'Literary and Cultural Contexts' sets out the most important intellectual traditions from which Byron's work emerged and in which it developed. 'Afterlives' shows readers the extent of Byron's influence on literature, art, music, and politics in Europe and beyond. 'Reading Byron Now' advances the critical agendas that are shaping Byron Studies today. The Handbook tackles key themes associated with Byron including the Byronic Hero, cosmopolitanism, liberalism, sexuality, mobility, scepticism, the Gothic, celebrity culture, and much more. For new readers of Byron, the volume provides an excellent grounding in his life and work, and for specialists, it opens up exciting new approaches to an icon of Romantic literature.

Book Encyclopedia of Greece and the Hellenic Tradition

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Greece and the Hellenic Tradition written by Graham Speake and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-31 with total page 1941 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hellenism is the living culture of the Greek-speaking peoples and has a continuing history of more than 3,500 years. The Encyclopedia of Greece and the HellenicTradition contains approximately 900 entries devoted to people, places, periods, events, and themes, examining every aspect of that culture from the Bronze Age to the present day. The focus throughout is on the Greeks themselves, and the continuities within their own cultural tradition. Language and religion are perhaps the most obvious vehicles of continuity; but there have been many others--law, taxation, gardens, music, magic, education, shipping, and countless other elements have all played their part in maintaining this unique culture. Today, Greek arts have blossomed again; Greece has taken its place in the European Union; Greeks control a substantial proportion of the world's merchant marine; and Greek communities in the United States, Australia, and South Africa have carried the Hellenic tradition throughout the world. This is the first reference work to embrace all aspects of that tradition in every period of its existence.
