Book Female Humpback Whale megaptera Novaeangliae Reproductive Class and Male female Interactions During the Breeding Season

Download or read book Female Humpback Whale megaptera Novaeangliae Reproductive Class and Male female Interactions During the Breeding Season written by Meagan E. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined whether female reproductive class (i.e., presence or absence of a calf) in humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) affects female behavior and male-female interactions on the Hawaiian breeding grounds. From 2003-2008, 295 female-calf groups (with or without a male escort) and 256 female no-calf groups (with a male) were observed. Forty-one female no-calf groups were confirmed male-female pairs by genetic sexing or photo-identification. Focal follows of 36 male-female pairs and 50 female-calf groups (29 escorted and 21 unescorted female-calf groups) were analyzed for time budget and movement estimates. Relative fluke size (fluke photogrammetry, n=30) and sighting histories (n=9) were used to estimate age-class for 39 individuals within focal follows. Escorted female-calf groups spent significantly more time traveling and less time resting than male-female pairs and unescorted female-calf groups. Indeed unescorted female-calf groups had time budgets more similar to male-female pairs than female-calf groups with a male. Male behavior and relative body size also affected female behavior and movement patterns: lone males chased females with calves significantly more than females without calves. Fluke sizes of mothers who were chased were significantly smaller than mothers not chased, and the chasing males tended to have smaller flukes (i.e., younger age-class) than males that did not chase. I also conducted 34 playback experiments (broadcasting sounds of competitive males) with 14 female no-calf groups (male-female pairs) and 20 female-calf groups (11 escorted and 9 unescorted female-calf groups). Results of playback trials indicated that females with calves were significantly more likely to avoid playbacks of sounds produced by adult males than females without calves. Overall, the range and variability of female behavior and movement patterns, especially around males, was striking. Results indicate that female reproductive class is a key factor in determining how females respond and interact with males during the breeding season, but also suggest that male-female interactions during the breeding season are a reflection of a combination of factors, beginning with female reproductive class, but also including costs and benefits of specific male escorts, stage of the reproductive cycle, relative body size and/or age-class.

Book Behavioral Physical and Acoustic Characteristics of Humpback Whales Megaptera Novaeangliae at Argus Island

Download or read book Behavioral Physical and Acoustic Characteristics of Humpback Whales Megaptera Novaeangliae at Argus Island written by Coleman Levenson and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the behavioral, physical, and acoustic characteristics of humpback whales was conducted at Argus Island Tower near Bermuda during April 1968. Swimming and diving habits were observed and photographed, and underwater sounds produced by the whales were recorded. Whale behavior at the surface prior to diving varied according to the time span of the succeeding dives. Information concerning the range of variation in physical appearance was sufficient to improve the quality of current visual identification aids. Preliminary analysis of humpback sounds indicates components at frequencies as high as 8kHz. (Author).

Book Occurrence Patterns and Social Behaviors of Humpback Whales Megaptera Novaeangliae Wintering Off Puerto Rico USA

Download or read book Occurrence Patterns and Social Behaviors of Humpback Whales Megaptera Novaeangliae Wintering Off Puerto Rico USA written by Mithriel Morningstar MacKay and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Occurrence patterns and social behaviors of North Atlantic humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) (NAHW) wintering off Puerto Rico were investigated to examine the relationship of this area to the aggregation wintering off the Dominican Republic. I described winter occurrence, movement and association patterns, and the relationship of group associations with bathymetric features in Mona Passage, immediately west of Puerto Rico. Data were collected from boat, land, and aerial surveys from 2011 to 2014. Acoustic data were collected with hydrophones deployed from a small vessel and units mounted to the sea floor, to determine the presence of singers (males). Photo-identification of individuals was used to describe intermixing of whales between higher latitudes and the study area. Social behaviors were described between intra- and inter-specific associations. A pilot study was conducted January-March 2011 from land platforms using scan sampling. In 2012, boat-based data collection and aerial reconnaissance were added. A total of 240.9 hours vessel, 13.0 hours aerial, and 303.6 hours land observations were conducted over 165 days. One hundred ninety-seven groups of humpback whales were observed with N = 331 individuals: 91 (46.2%) singletons, 67 (34%) dyads, 17 (8.6%) mother-calf pairs, 8 (4.1%) in competitive breeding groups, 8 (4.1%) mother-calf-escort groups, and 6 (3.1%) mixed-species associations. Group associations were not random. A multinomial linear regression model supported group composition and behaviors were correlated with "hotspots" associated with four bathymetric features. Dyads and surface active groups were dispersed among features in deeper water. Singletons were observed further from a shelf edge, while singing males were closely associated with a shelf edge. Mother-calf pairs occurred nearshore in shallow water moving offshore when accompanied by an escort. Identification photos matched against the NAHW catalog indicated movement between most feeding grounds and throughout the West Indies. It is important to continue and expand this study in Puerto Rico to monitor long-term population changes, and as a means of predicting where human activity overlaps with NAHW occurrence, especially due to possible U.S. delisting of NAHW as endangered. Book Maternal behaviour of humpback whales in southeast Alaska

Download or read book Maternal behaviour of humpback whales in southeast Alaska written by Andrew Ronald Szabo and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, I characterize the maternal care patterns of humpback whales in southeast Alaska. Through a study of proximity behaviour, I show that humpbacks behave similarly to terrestrial ungulate 'followers': the cow and calf are rarely more than several body lengths apart; proximity between the cow and calf is greatest during periods of travel relative to other behaviours; and, proximity is greatest when the dive behaviour of the pair is synchronized. Unlike that observed in typical follower species, however, proximity is not found to decrease significantly as the pair's association lengthens. To account for this, I argue that the length of the observation period was insufficient to detect such a trend since maternal pairs remain together for several months after the last observations. In addition, I analyze the diving behaviour of the maternal pair to examine the potential negative consequences for the female associated with the follower tactic in humpbacks. The results suggest that several behavioural modifications are made by the cow and calf in an effort to minimize the duration of separation between the two. Ultimately, I argue that behaviour observed in humpback whales is commensurate in function with following behaviour in terrestrial ungulate followers. Humpbacks are migratory, and as in many migratory species, following behaviour provides a mechanism whereby the maternal dyad can maintain close proximity during periods of travel. Moreover, as with many follower species, humpbacks can rely upon their large size as a means of defence against offspring predation. Finally, although obvious differences exist between the habitats in which humpbacks and ungulate followers reside, arguably both are open habitats that lack the cover necessary to allow for offspring concealment.

Book A Comparative Analysis of Humpback Whale Songs Recorded in Pelagic Waters of the Eastern North Pacific

Download or read book A Comparative Analysis of Humpback Whale Songs Recorded in Pelagic Waters of the Eastern North Pacific written by Thomas F. Norris and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comparative analysis of humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) songs recorded in the eastern North Pacific was performed in order to assess the feasibility of using songs to determine the stock and breeding area identity of migrating whales. Acoustic recordings were made in spring 1997 throughout temperate and subtropical waters of the eastern North Pacific during a marine mammal research cruise (SWAPS) and at the Revillagigedo Archipelago, Mexico during a separate investigation of humpback whales. Songs were analyzed from samples recorded at three distinct pelagic regions of the SWAPS cruise: 1) approximately 2000 km "E of Hawaii; 2) approximately 1200 km west of San Francisco, California; and 3) approximately 1400 km west of San Diego, CA. These samples were compared to songs recorded during a coincident period at Socorro Island, a humpback whale breeding area in the Mexican Pacific. More than 400 phrases were extracted, qualitatively categorized, and compared. Nine unique phrase types were identified from the Mexican sample of which eight were also identified from the two pelagic samples recorded off California. Reliable comparisons among the four regions sampled were problematic, primarily due to the poor quality of most recordings made during the SWAPS cruise. For future work, we recommend a dedicated effort to obtain high quality recordings of songs for all geographic areas to be compared. Furthermore, songs from respective breeding areas should be characterized quantitatively before proceeding with comparative analyses. In the near future, rapid advances in digital signal processing technology and worldwide deployments of acoustic monitoring equipment should make it more practical to use songs as an indicator of stock and breeding area identity. However, at present there other more efficient and reliable methods of accompiishing these goals.
