Book Kinematic Comparison of the Cartwheel Versus Glide Shot Put Techniques

Download or read book Kinematic Comparison of the Cartwheel Versus Glide Shot Put Techniques written by Nathaniel H. Lawton and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A somewhat new technique in the shot put is the use of a cartwheel, such as a gymnast would use to generate horizontal velocity in tumbling. The position of the body at landing may result in a large muscular stretch-shortening response in the trunk. This stretch-shortening response combined with the horizontal velocity generated by the cartwheel may lead to greater velocity of the shot at release increasing horizontal distance. The purpose of this study is to compare the kinematics of the cartwheel and glide technique in the shot put. Three individual case studies were performed. Data collection occurred over two days. Subjects threw a 4 kg women's indoor shot put during the study, the same implement thrown in competition. 10 trials of the glide technique were performed on the first testing day, and 10 trials of the cartwheel technique on the second testing day. All trials were videotaped using a standard digital video camera (60 Hz). Horizontal distance of each trial was recorded. All video data was analyzed using Peak Motus software v 9.0 (Vicon Peak, CO). Descriptive statistics of mean, standard deviation (SD), and coefficient of variation (COV) were used to compare the variables of release height, angle, and velocity, and horizontal distance of each trial. All subjects recorded their best single throw using the cartwheel technique. One subject showed an improvement of 1.14 m with the cartwheel technique. Subject 2 showed decreased variation of performance and all release variables with the cartwheel technique compared to the glide. All subjects showed average increases in release height and release angle using the cartwheel technique. Further research is needed to determine specific performance enhancing qualities of the cartwheel technique in the shot put"--Document.
