Book State Building and Late Development

Download or read book State Building and Late Development written by David Waldner and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does state building sometimes promote economic growth and in other cases impede it? Through an analysis of political and economic development in four countries—Turkey, Syria, Korea, and Taiwan—this book explores the origins of political-economic institutions and the mechanisms connecting them to economic outcomes. David Waldner extends our understanding of the political underpinnings of economic development by examining the origins of political coalitions on which states and their institutions depend. He first provides a political model of institutional change to analyze how elites build either cross-class or narrow coalitions, and he examines how these arrangements shape specific institutions: state-society relations, the nature of bureaucracy, fiscal structures, and patterns of economic intervention. He then links these institutions to economic outcomes through a bargaining model to explain why countries such as Korea and Taiwan have more effectively overcome the collective dilemmas that plague economic development than have others such as Turkey and Syria. The latter countries, he shows, lack institutional solutions to the problems that surround productivity growth. The first book to compare political and economic development in these two regions, State Building and Late Development draws on, and contributes to, arguments from political sociology and political economy. Based on a rigorous research design, the work offers both a finely drawn comparison of development and a compellingly argued analysis of the character and consequences of "precocious Keynesianism," the implementation of Keynesian demand-stimulus policies in largely pre-industrial economies.

Book Development and Foreign Policy in Turkey

Download or read book Development and Foreign Policy in Turkey written by Mustafa Kutlay and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sketches an institutional political economy framework to discuss the interaction between development and foreign policy in the global South with reference to Turkey. The authors argue that although the developmental state framework has commonly been employed to explore domestic economic development processes without analytically focusing on the foreign policy dimension, developmental state institutions are highly relevant in the creation and pursuit of a development-oriented foreign policy at a time of growing uncertainty marred by geopolitical and geoeconomic tensions. The book develops a two-level ‘Regime Coherence Framework’ to account for the domestic and international dimensions of development-oriented foreign policy. The main argument posits that the development regime in Turkey and associated foreign policies lack coherence, due to weak institutional complementarities between economic governance, state-business relations, and financial statecraft at the domestic-external nexus.

Download or read book Peripheralization written by Matthias Naumann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-12 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peripheries emerge as a result of shifts in economic and political decision-making at various scales. Therefore peripheral spaces are not a “natural” phenomenon but an outcome of the intrinsic logic of uneven geographical development in capitalist societies. Discussing examples from Germany, Eastern Europe, Turkey, Iraqi Kurdistan, Pakistan, India and Brazil, the volume describes the social production of peripheries from different theoretical and methodological perspectives. In so doing, it argues in favour of a re-politicization of the recent debate on peripheralization.

Download or read book Strategic Planning in Local Communities written by Călin Emilian Hințea and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comparative international study of the patterns of planning in local governments. While strategic planning has been a field of interest for public management and administrative science for over half a century there are very few cross-national studies of the specifics of planning in local governments. The book analyses the planning activities of local authorities in 7 diverse countries: France, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Spain, Turkey and USA. Although theoretical models of strategic planning are used, the book’s findings point to a very diverse and interesting environment with cultural, political and legal factors playing a significant role in shaping how planning is done in each country.

Book Turkey a Century of Change in State and Society

Download or read book Turkey a Century of Change in State and Society written by Bayram Balci and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of Turkey celebrates the centenary of its proclamation in 2023. Founded on the ruins of the Ottoman Empire, one of the world’s greatest empires both in terms of its geographical extent and its longevity, Republican Turkey has gone through a century of profound and constant changes and transformations from politics to society, economy to religion, or culture to history. These changes have been produced by inner and foreign policies carried out and implemented by the country’s leaders – from Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the current Turkish President in 2023 - but also under the influence of the regional and international context. This collective work aims to take stock of the great achievements of the Turkish republican project. It attempts to draw a general presentation of the evolution of contemporary Turkey in six main areas which constitute six major issues for the country: the general political evolution of Turkey focusing on the issue of citizenship; the transformations in the Turkish economy through a political economy analysis; the evolution of the relationship between religion, state and society; Turkey’s nation-building and the Kurdish question, which still seeks a solution; the changes in Turkish foreign policy focusing on the relationship between Turkey and the West; the relationship between Turkey and Europe, caught between the model of civilization for the republican regime and the prospects of accession to the European Union. Several “focus points” also concentrate on specific subjects such as the Alevi issue, the Cyprus issue or the Turkish soft power with an accent on Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Burawoy has helped to reshape the theory and practice of sociology across the Western world. Public Sociology is his most thoroughgoing attempt to explore what a truly committed, engaged sociology should look like in the twenty-first century. Burawoy looks back on the defining moments of his intellectual journey, exploring his pivotal early experiences as a researcher, such as his fieldwork in a Zambian copper mine and a Chicago factory. He recounts his time as a graduate and professor during the ideological ferment in sociology departments of the 1970s, and explores how his experiences intersected with a changing political and intellectual world up to the present. Recalling Max Weber, Burawoy argues that sociology is much more than just a discipline – it is a vocation, to be practiced everywhere and by everyone.

Book Political Economy of Development in Turkey

Download or read book Political Economy of Development in Turkey written by Emre Özçelik and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 2023-03-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adopting a political-economy perspective, this book is an original collection of research chapters that focus on Turkey’s economic-development experience from the nineteenth century to the present. It provides a systematic and chronological examination of Turkey’s major historical dynamics in the economic and socio-political spheres. The chapters are organized according to the consecutive phases of Turkey’s political-economic development. Each chapter not only reflects on the country-specific aspects of those development phases, but also clarifies the dependence of domestic-policy orientations on the dynamics of the world economy. As such, the book provides a historically-conscious, political-economic account of Turkey’s dependent-development experience. The book serves as a quality reference on the political economy of modern Turkey, bringing together fourteen prominent experts as contributing authors who have devoted their intellectual lives to the understanding and explanation of political-economic dynamics in both Turkey and the world. All contributors write on a historical period of the Turkish economy in which they are most specialized. This aspect of the book is a momentous advantage in the field of Turkey's political economy, enabling the highest degree of academic expertise to concentrate in each chapter.
