Book excerpt: A statistical comparison of two test batteries, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) and the General Aptitude Battery (GATB), is presented. The comparison is based on a sample that is predominantly male and white. Four different analyses were carried out and are reported here. The first analysis described the sample and its performance on the subtests and the composites of the GATB and the subtests and Department of Defense Student Testing Program composites of the ASVAB. The second analysis investigated the extent to which the ASVAB can predict GATB subtests and composites, and vice versa. The third analysis was a canonical correlation of the subtests of the two batteries. The fourth analysis consisted of principal components factor analyses of the two batteries, both separately and combined. Results showed that the batteries do not overlap enough to be considered equivalent or interchangeable, but that they do share a large amount of variance. Such shared variance is to be expected in batteries which have been developed for occupational selection or guidance for similar populations. Book excerpt: "In order to provide aptitude information for vocational place-ment used in all military services and to be used in the Department of Defense High School Testing Program, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) wlas developed. This instrument was designed specifically to be used in counseling high school students regarding military and civilian occupations and for aiding the military with selection, training, and assignment. This study involved an original sample of 157 volunteer students enrolled in one of four vocational programs at a community college. The groups were designated as: Heavy Equipment, Automotive, Electronics, and Industrial Electricity. Keith Kirkbride, Director of Vocational Programs for the Spokane Community Colleges, provided helpful assistance in obtaining useful student data for the study. The community college was interested in finding an assessment tool that would predict a student's success in a vocational program. The ASVAB was administered to each group and data were analyzed to determine the predictability of the ASVAB in this community college setting. Significant relationships were found between individual subtests of the ASVAB which identified three measurement areas: intelligence measures; achievement tests reflecting specific high school coursework, and vocational tests measuring first-hand experience in such areas as auto mechanics and electronics. The profiles constructed by regression equations to predict GPA were not significant within groups or for the ttotal sample. Also, these data were not effective in identifying students who withdrew from the programs. Several confounding variables were identified which suggest future research"--Document.

Book excerpt: Aptitude and achievement data of students detained at the Utah State Industrial School were studied in order to establish occupational aptitude patterns to serve as guidelines in the formation of a vocational educational curriculum at the institution. Based on scores attained on the California Achievement test, the total group sample was found to be retarded 3.7 years in achievement level, compared to norms established by this instrument. Based on the scores attained on the General Aptitude Test Battery, the total group sample was found to be significantly below the norms established by this instrument in aptitudes relating to intelligence, verbal, numerical, and clerical perception, and above average norms in manual dexterity and form perception. Occupational aptitude patterns were established from the General Aptitude Test Battery, and it was determined that 60 percent of the student sample group could qualify for seven of these occupational aptitude patterns. Based on established occupational aptitude patterns and other extenuating factors, the type of vocational education curriculum which was suggested for the Utah State Industrial School was a general vocational curriculum with stress on vocational guidance and a well-defined work experience program.
