Book Platonic and Ciceronian Studies

Download or read book Platonic and Ciceronian Studies written by John Glucker and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-25 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of essays published by John Glucker between 1987 and 2014 in various books and periodicals, now assembled for the first time. They deal with aspects of the contributions to Western thought of two of its major representatives – indeed, two of the major figures in the whole of European intellectual history – Plato and Cicero. All but one of the book’s chapters are in English, but ancient texts are usually quoted in the original Greek or Latin. Some of these essays deal with the interpretation of sections or parts of Plato and Cicero’s philosophical works, while others study the influence of these writings on the history of ancient and modern thought. Some of the articles are more technical, and will therefore be of interest to scholars and reserachers, while others are directed at ‘laymen’ with a good basic background knowledge of Western thought.

Book Michael Oakeshott Notebooks 1922 86

Download or read book Michael Oakeshott Notebooks 1922 86 written by Michael Oakeshott and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1920s to the 1980s Oakeshott filled dozens of notebooks with his private reflections, both personal and intellectual. Their contents range from aphorisms to miniature essays, forming a unique record of his intellectual trajectory over his entire career. This volume makes them accessible in print for the first time, drawing together a host of his previously inaccessible observations on politics, philosophy, art, education, and much else besides. Religion in particular emerges as an ongoing concern for him in a way that is not visible from his published works. The notebooks also provide a unique source of insight into Oakeshott's musings on life, thanks to the hitherto unsuspected existence of the series of 'Belle Dame' notebooks that were written in the late 1920s and early 1930s but which only came to light two decades after his death. At the same period in which he was developing the concepts that would form Experience and its Modes, Oakeshott's personal life lead him to reflect extensively on love and death, themes that highlight his enduring romantic affinities. Accompanied by an original editorial introduction, the volume allows readers to see for themselves exactly which works Oakeshott used in compiling each of his notebooks, providing a much clearer record of his intellectual influences than has previously been available. It will be an essential addition to the library of his works for all those interested in his ideas.

Book Michael Oakeshott the Ancient Greeks and the Philosophical Study of Politics

Download or read book Michael Oakeshott the Ancient Greeks and the Philosophical Study of Politics written by Eric Steven Kos and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2016-07-20 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a question fundamental for Oakeshott throughout his life, which is what we are doing when we read and discuss some memorable work in the history of political thought. The approach the book takes to Oakeshott’s response to this question is of particular interest in that it explores in detail extensive notes he made on the beginnings of political philosophy in ancient Greece in an unpublished set of notebooks in which he recorded his thoughts on many different subjects throughout his life. In addition, the book gives contemporary significance to Oakeshott’s interpretation of the history of political thought by using it to confront a series of contemporary challenges to the study of the history of political thought and to the study of the ‘great books.’ In particular, Oakeshott’s distinction between ‘various kinds or levels of political thought’ is carefully analyzed, as is also the extent of his agreement and disagreement with Quentin Skinner. In the concluding chapter, the author relates Oakeshott’s view of the nature of the history of political thought to his well-known description of philosophy as ‘conversation’, describing it as an introduction to that conversation.

Book Explorations in Ancient and Modern Philosophy Volume 3

Download or read book Explorations in Ancient and Modern Philosophy Volume 3 written by Myles Burnyeat and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myles Burnyeat (1939–2019) was a major figure in the study of ancient Greek philosophy during the last decades of the twentieth century and the first of this. After teaching positions in London and Cambridge, where he became Laurence Professor, in 1996 he took up a Senior Research Fellowship at All Souls College, Oxford, from which he retired in 2006. In 2012 he published two volumes collecting essays dating from before the move to Oxford. Two new posthumously published volumes bring together essays from his years at All Souls and his retirement. The main body of Volume 3 presents studies written for a wide readership, first on Plato's Republic and then on the reading and interpretation of Plato in subsequent periods, particularly in nineteenth-century Britain. The volume also includes hitherto unpublished lectures, 'The Archaeology of Feeling', on the ancient origins of some key modern philosophical and psychological concepts.
