Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Prophecy of Habakkuk Nearly fifty years ago, when the bright light of heaven shone around my path-way, I commenced the study of the prophecy of Habakkuk, being convinced that among the Minor Prophets he ranks as one of the most interesting and important. Soon, in the mysterious Providence of God, darkness settled down on me; crippled by this experience, all special study was laid aside for several years, my time being devoted to the duties then required of me as pastor of the Dickinson church in the Presbytery of Carlisle. At inter vals in after years friends kindly offered to be eyes for the blind. I must mention here my wife, Louisa W. Kennedy, the Rev. Cornelius R. Lane, D. D., a fellow-member of the fac ulty of Wilson Female College, the Rev. H. R. Schenck, pastor, and Mr. W. G. Reed. Elder, of the Falling Spring Church. By their aid I now, after passing the allotted years of three score and ten, am able to present this work, in the hope that its readers will gain a plainer insight into the glorious truths presented by this prophet of old. Much ex egetical matter has been omitted in this effort to present the interpretation of the prophecy clearly and fully. Though prosecuted under serious difficulties, the work has been a source of great pleasure to me. If this pleasure is shared by my friends, and my labor in any way redounds to the glory of God, through the better understanding of His Word, I will feel abundantly rewarded. That small, obscure part of the Old Testament tucked away somewhere in the middle of the minor prophets,--as Gowan put it--Habakkuk has been a middle child of too many Bible students' non-attention. Yet Gowan makes no claim that this book should be more central than it has been. Instead, he shows his own personal, pastoral, and scholarly involvement with this powerful tract. After an introductory chapter, the author examines each of Habakkuk's three sections. Gowan offers his own translation of the text, applying a critical approach, and providing a decisive commentary. Gowan compares the first section's dialogue between the prophet and God (Habakkuk 1:1--2:4) with other Old Testament dialogues about God's justice. He also discusses God's response, But the just shall live by faith, as a meaningful answer to Habakkuk's questions. While the woe-oracles of the second section (Habakkuk 2:5-20) have not seemed very important in the past, Gowan shows how they form a mock funeral dirge sung in advance of a great tyrant's death. He then applies this insight to the problems of tyranny and liberty today. The psalm (Habakkuk 3) which concludes the book is discussed in terms of Israelite traditions, theophany, faith, and history. The central focus is placed on Habakkuk's striking personal statement concerning the ability of the man of faith to live through suffering joyfully. Recognizing the relationship of our suffering to that of Christ, Gowan concludes The Triumph of Faith in Habakkuk by drawing together relevant themes from Habakkuk's time and Jesus's experience.

It shows that the pesherist identified the Kittim with the Romans who conquered Judaea in 63 BCE, and suggests that the scroll refers to several righteous and wicked figures, including the last Hasmonean high priests.
