But he places prayer in front, and he delights to contemplate it as the "ladder" which connects earth with heaven, by which the soul rises to highest communion, and spiritual blessings, like descending angels, come down to our world. The apostle knew the benefit of prayer from his own experience, and he is therefore anxious that they should pray with persevering energy, and give himself a prominent place in their intercessions. They were never to suppose that prayer was needless, either because their desires had been gratified, or God had bestowed upon them all His gifts. This perseverance was a prime element of successful prayer, as it proved their sincerity, and evinced the power of their faith. The phrase eV evxapiaria is not connected with the preceding Tjj irpoaevxji irpoaKaprepefre, but with the words last quoted--" watching in it with thanksgiving."
