Book The Song of Deeds

Download or read book The Song of Deeds written by Neil Corcoran and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Jones's long poem The Anathemata first published in 1952, has always been admired, particularly by other poets. Eliot thought it the "remarkable" work of a writer "of major importance," and Auden described it as "the greatest long poem written in English in this century." Neil Corcoran's study is concerned with the critical task of suggesting the nature, scope and significance of David Jones's achievement. It explores the affinities between Jones's work and that of other modernists, particularly Eliot and Joyce; and it attempts to trace Jones's importance in the history and development of modern British poetry.

Book David Jones and the Craft of Theology

Download or read book David Jones and the Craft of Theology written by Elizabeth R Powell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an imaginative exploration of the art of David Jones which addresses Christian teaching through engagement with selected artistic works: a poem, a painted inscription and a wood engraving. Elizabeth R. Powell's study does not just enable readers to understand Jones but also to use his kind of loving attention in their own lives – which, Jones would argue, is theology's most important task. Through close readings of material objects, Powell draws the reader into the participatory, performative and dialogical possibilities of the craft of theology. She frames an older style of theology in a distinctive and modern way, as a graced human practice and a place of transforming relation with the divine. Powell argues that Jones's art works offer places of beauty in which to 'become beauty' along the way. Located at the cross-section of theology, literature and the arts, this volume shows that being interdisciplinary is nothing less than finding ways for theology and humanity to be more richly itself.

Book David Jones and Rome

Download or read book David Jones and Rome written by Jasmine Hunter Evans and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary and archival study explores the reception of ancient Rome in the artistic, literary, and philosophical works of David Jones (1895-1974)—the Anglo-Welsh, Roman Catholic, First World War veteran. For Jones, the twentieth century was a period of crisis, an age of conflict, disillusionment and cultural decay, all of which he saw as evidence of the decline of Western civilisation. Across his lifetime, Jones would create a dynamic vision of ancient Rome in an attempt both to understand and to challenge this situation. His reimagining of Rome was not founded on a classical education. Instead, it was fashioned from his lived experience, extensive reading, and—most importantly—his engagement with four areas of contemporary discourse that were themselves built upon intricate and conflicting representations of Rome: British political rhetoric, cyclical history, the Catholic cultural revival, and the Welsh nationalist movement. Tracing Jones's developing approach to Rome across these contexts can provide a way into his art and thought. Whether in his poetic fragments, watercolours, essays, letters, marginalia or unique painted inscriptions, Jones strove to question, complicate and remake Rome's relationship with modernity. In this way, Rome appears in Jones's works both as a symbol of transhistorical imperialism, totalitarianism, and the mechanisation of life, and simultaneously as the cultural and religious progenitor of the West, and in particular, of Wales, with which artists must creatively reconnect if decline was to be avoided.

Book David Jones A Christian Modernist

Download or read book David Jones A Christian Modernist written by Jamie Callison and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Jones: A Christian Modernist? is a major reassessment of the work of the poet, artist and essayist David Jones (1895-1974) in light of the complex, ambiguous idea of a ‘Christian modernism’. His richly experimental and palimpsestic poetry, art and thought drew extensively on Christian tradition and symbolism as a key to the future: rejecting a technocratic and utilitarian modernity in favour of a revitalised culture of sign and sacrament. This volume examines historical influences on Jones’s development, his impassioned engagement with the idea of modernity and with modernist literature and art, the theological sources and resonances of his work, and contemporary or late-modern perspectives on his achievement.

Book Selected Works of David Jones from In Parenthesis The Anathemata The Sleeping Lord

This book was released on 1992 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Jones is regarded by many to be one of the great writers of the modern age. T.S. Eliot called "In Parenthesis" "a work of genius" and W.H. Auden wrote that "The Anathemata" "is probably the finest long poem written in English in this century". In addition to generous selections from these two book-length poems, this volume includes "The Tribune's Visitation", "The Tutelar of the Place", "The Hunt", and an except from the title poem from "The Sleeping Lord", the books Jones published shortly before his death.

Book David Jones

Download or read book David Jones written by Thomas Dilworth and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2017-04-15 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the revolutions of the last century, none was more important or potentially more lasting than the one in the arts called "Modernism". Among the giants of that movement were writers who changed our conceptions of poetry and prose forever. Now, well into the new century, we can look back to admire and reflect on figures from that period. Last year saw biographies of two monumental poets of Modernism: Robert Crawford's first volume on T. S. Eliot, and David Moody's concluding third volume on the life of Ezra Pound. We are excited to announce the first full–length critical biography of the third member, too often overlooked, of that extraordinary group. The beautifully illustrated David Jones: Engraver, Soldier, Painter, Poet by Thomas Dilworth will stand for generations as the great biography this wonderful artist deserves. Jones (1895–1974) was a painter, a wood– and copper–engraver and maker of painted inscriptions, but it was as a poet that he left his most lasting mark. Eliot called him "one of the most distinguished writers of my generation" and Dylan Thomas said he "would like to have done anything as good as David Jones has done." Auden praised his poem In Parenthesis as "the greatest book [ever] about the Great War", and The Anathemata as one of the "truly great poems in Western Literature." His work, the whole of it, enables him to stand alongside Eliot, Pound, and James Joyce as an incomparable figure in literary Modernism.

Book David Jones s The Grail Mass and Other Works

Download or read book David Jones s The Grail Mass and Other Works written by David Jones and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on new archival discoveries, this book presents an authoritative reconstruction of David Jones's The Grail Mass, the unfinished and unpublished project from which came both his masterpiece The Anathemata – a work described by W.H. Auden as 'one of the most important poems of our times' – and The Sleeping Lord and other fragments, his final collection. With detailed commentary on the development and reconstruction of the text, this edition provides a full picture of Jones's literary endeavours over the second half of his life and further establishes his status as a major figure in the first wave of British modernist writers alongside T.S. Eliot and James Joyce. In addition to the text of The Grail Mass, this edition includes a number of unpublished fragments by Jones that emerged from this larger project, complete with textual commentaries.

Book Recharting the Thirties

    Book Details:
  • Author : Patrick J. Quinn
  • Publisher : Susquehanna University Press
  • Release : 1996
  • ISBN : 9780945636908
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Recharting the Thirties written by Patrick J. Quinn and published by Susquehanna University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of Recharting the Thirties is to revitalize the awareness of the reading public with regard to eighteen writers whose books have been largely ignored by publishers and scholars since their major works first appeared in the thirties. The selection is not based on a political agenda, but encompasses a wide and divergent range of philosophies; clearly, the contrasts between Empson and Upward, or between Powell and Slater, indicated the wide-ranging vision of the period. Women writers of the period have largely been marginalized, and the writings of Sackville-West and Burdekin, for example, not only present distinct feminine voices of the period, but also illuminate how much good literature has been forgotten.

Book David Jones

Download or read book David Jones written by Christine Pagnoulle and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christine Pagnoulle's commentary provides a detailed study of eight among David Jones's more accessible poems: those pieces in fact which he reluctantly detached from his work-in-progress and released for publication between 1955 and his death in 1974. It elucidates difficult passages, relates them to his other works, whether poems, essays, or drawings, and shows how David Jones's vision of the world in the middle of our century bears on our present concerns. While developing orignal interpretations this commentary also integrates previous critical approaches into a comprehensive overview. It will thus be welcome reading for specialists of David Jones's poetry, and will also be of interest to those readers who are discovering or still have to discover his work.
