Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle to the Philippians The passage of the Gospel from Eastern to Western civilization is an event of the highest importance and interest in the history of the Christian Church. With the exception of the extension of the offer of salvation from Jews to Gentiles, there is hardly anything of greater importance in the progress of Apostolic Christianity. It was an advance from a world in which the best elements of civilization were to be found in Judaism, to a world in which the best elements were centred in the art and literature of Greece, and in the military and political organization of Rome. Divine religion was seeking friendship with human philosophy and human law. It did not come uninvited. Macedonia, half Greek and half Roman, took the initiative under special guidance from heaven. The Spirit intimated that St. Paul, Silas and Timothy were not to preach the word in Asia, Mysia, or Bithynia: and, when Troas was reached and Luke had joined them, a man of Macedonia appeared to the Apostle with the urgent appeal, 'Come over into Macedonia and help us (Acts xvi. 6 ff.). Possibly the first ship that was available after this summons reached him was one that was bound for Neapolis (Kavalla), the port of Philippi, about nine or ten miles from it, and separated from it by a ridge which was then called Symbolum, and is about 1600 feet above the sea. More probably St. Paul saw the great advantages of starting from such a centre as Philippi, and chose his ship accordingly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's Epistle: To the Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and to Philemon N the present volume I have expounded the third group of St. Paul's Epistles, those written during his first imprison ment at Rome. It is well that the four Epistles are expounded in one volume. For they are most closely related in thought and expression, and unitedly present a very definite phase of St. Paul's thought; a marked development of the thought embodied in the great group already annotated. This rich development can be appreciated only by consecutive study of the whole group. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Grammatical Commentary on St. Paul's Epistles to the Philippians, Colossians, and to Philemon: With a Revised Translation This fervent, affectionate, and, in parts, pathetic Epistle was written by the apostle to his liberal and warmhearted converts in the Roman colony of Philippi. Towards the close of his first captivity at Rome (see Introd. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Critical and Grammatical Commentary St. Paul's Epistles to the Philippians, Colossians, and to Philemon: With a Revised Translation The present volume forms the fourth portion of my Commentary on St. Paul's Epistles, and contains an exposition of the important Epistles to the Philippians and Colossians, and of the graceful and touching Epistle to Philemon. The notes will be found to reflect the same critical and grammatical characteristics, and to recognize the same principles of interpretation as those which I endeavored to follow in the earlier portions of this work, and on which the experiences slowly and laboriously acquired during this undertaking have taught me year by year more confidently to rely. There is, however, a slight amount of additional matter which it is perhaps desirable briefly to specify. In the first place, I have been enabled to carry out more fully and completely a system of reference to the great versions of antiquity, and have spared no pains to approach a little more nearly to those fresh and clear, yet somewhat remote, well-heads of Christian interpretation. In the notes on the Pastoral Epistles it was my endeavor to place before the reader, in all more important passages, the interpretations adopted by the Syriac, Old Latin, and Gothic Versions. To these in the present volume I have added references to the Coptic (Memphitic) and Ethiopic Versions; to the former as found in the convenient and accessible edition of Botticher, to the latter as found in Walton's Polyglott, but more especially and exclusively to the excellent edition of the Ethiopic New Testament by the late Mr. Pell Piatt (1830), published by the Bible Society. Download or read book A Commentary on St Paul s written by Joseph Agar Beet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-23 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on St. Paul's: Epistle to the Galatians This historic light on St. Paul and his surroundings, supported as it is by the united testimony of the writers of the early Church, affords evidence which in all ages has assured all students, even those who have doubted the authorship of other Epistles attributed to him, that at least these four Epistles are from the pen of the Great Apostle. This certainty of authorship gives to these Epistles a special value, even amid the other Epistles bearing St. Paul's name and to those who confidently accept them all as genuine. In harmony with this mutual relation of the Epistles, the three volumes in which I have annotated them form one com plete work. I have endeavoured, by tracing the line of thought of these Epistles and by comparing them each with the others and with the Book of Acts, to reproduce the thought andthe movements and surroundings of the Apostle of the Gentiles at the noonday of his career. This reproduction I hope to supplement by another volume expounding the profound Epistles written during the seclusion of his first long imprisonment, viz. Those to the Ephesians, Philippians, Colos sians, and Philemon: by a fifth volume comprising both his two earliest and his three latest extant Epistles, viz. Those written during his second missionary tour, to the newly-founded Church at Thessalonica, and those written, as I hope to prove, after his release from his first imprisonment and to conclude the series by a volume expounding St. Paul's teaching as a whole, com paring it with that of the other writers of the New Testament, and tracing the manifold teaching of these various writers to its one immediate source in the Gospel proclaimed by Christ and to its ultimate source in the Eternal Purpose of God.
