Book Volume of fluid Lagrangian eulerian Models for Spray Simulations

Download or read book Volume of fluid Lagrangian eulerian Models for Spray Simulations written by Chia-Wei Kuo (Ph.D.) and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical tool to study the physics of sprays is Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) via Volume- of-Fluid (VoF) methods. A noteworthy limitation of this method is its high computational power demand. In the cases of industrial sprays, the total number of computational cells required can be up to a trillion. Consequently, alternative strategies for alleviating the excessive computational burden of a DNS while still preserving a comparable level of solution fidelity are required. One strategy is the Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) method. The AMR serves to dynamically allocate high-resolution grids in the regions requiring them. Due to such a feature, the AMR is expected to provide a speedup benefit against a traditional static mesh. A detailed analysis of the AMR speedup promise for spray problems is performed. Results show that the envisioned advantage does not hold for high-velocity sprays, and two factors cause it. The first and obvious one is the number of AMR grids, which grows as the calculation proceeds. The second and less apparent factor is the decay of the cell-base speedup, which is related to the Frobenius condition number. The other engineering approach is to combine VoF and Lagrangian-Eulerian (LE) strategies (VoFLE). In this method, the liquid bodies that local grids can characterize are numerically captured by VoF. The liquid elements that fall below the local mesh resolutions, i.e., unresolved structures, are transitioned into discrete Lagrangian droplets and handled in a LE fashion. We present a new VoFLE method by including the capabilities of computing potential further breakup of unresolved structures. The calculation of breakup is based on Maximum Entropy Formalism (MEF) conditional on the satisfaction of mass, momentum, and energy conservation constraints. Reasonable agreements are shown in the comparison between the predicted mean Sauter mean diameter and the experimental measurements. Last, further expansion of the VoFLE solver for handling compressibility effect, heat transfer, and Lagrangian droplet vaporization is briefly addressed. This work is ongoing, and more detailed analyses and improvements are planned.

Book Small Scale Modeling and Simulation of Incompressible Turbulent Multi Phase Flow

Download or read book Small Scale Modeling and Simulation of Incompressible Turbulent Multi Phase Flow written by Stéphane Vincent and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides basic and recent research insights concerning the small scale modeling and simulation of turbulent multi-phase flows. By small scale, it has to be understood that the grid size for the simulation is smaller than most of the physical time and space scales of the problem. Small scale modeling of multi-phase flows is a very popular topic since the capabilities of massively parallel computers allows to go deeper into the comprehension and characterization of realistic flow configurations and at the same time, many environmental and industrial applications are concerned such as nuclear industry, material processing, chemical reactors, engine design, ocean dynamics, pollution and erosion in rivers or on beaches. The work proposes a complete and exhaustive presentation of models and numerical methods devoted to small scale simulation of incompressible turbulent multi-phase flows from specialists of the research community. Attention has also been paid to promote illustrations and applications, multi-phase flows and collaborations with industry. The idea is also to bring together developers and users of different numerical approaches and codes to share their experience in the development and validation of the algorithms and discuss the difficulties and limitations of the different methods and their pros and cons. The focus will be mainly on fixed-grid methods, however adaptive grids will be also partly broached, with the aim to compare and validate the different approaches and models.

Book A Eulerlan Lagrangian Model to Simulate Two Phase Particulate Flows

Download or read book A Eulerlan Lagrangian Model to Simulate Two Phase Particulate Flows written by S. V. Apte and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Figure 1 shows a snapshot of liquid fuel spray coming out of an injector nozzle in a realistic gas-turbine combustor. Here the spray atomization was simulated using a stochastic secondary breakup model (Apte et al. 2003a) with point-particle approximation for the droplets. Very close to the injector, it is observed that the spray density is large and the droplets cannot be treated as point-particles. The volume displaced by the liquid in this region is significant and can alter the gas-phase flow and spray evolution. In order to address this issue, one can compute the dense spray regime by an Eulerian- Eulerian technique using advanced interface tracking/level-set methods (Sussman et al. 1994; Tryggvason et al. 2001; Herrmann 2003). This, however, is computationally intensive and may not be viable in realistic complex configurations. We therefore plan to develop a methodology based on Eulerian-Lagrangian technique which will allow us to capture the essential features of primary atomization using models to capture interactions between the fluid and droplets and which can be directly applied to the standard atomization models used in practice. The numerical scheme for unstructured grids developed by Mahesh et al. (2003) for incompressible flows is modified to take into account the droplet volume fraction. The numerical framework is directly applicable to realistic combustor geometries. Our main objectives in this work are: * Develop a numerical formulation based on Eulerian-Lagrangian techniques with models for interaction terms between the fluid and particles to capture the Kelvin- Helmholtz type instabilities observed during primary atomization. * Validate this technique for various two-phase and particulate flows. * Assess its applicability to capture primary atomization of liquid jets in conjunction with secondary atomization models.

Book Simulations for Design and Manufacturing

Download or read book Simulations for Design and Manufacturing written by Uday S. Dixit and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on numerical simulations of manufacturing processes, discussing the use of numerical simulation techniques for design and analysis of the components and the manufacturing systems. Experimental studies on manufacturing processes are costly, time consuming and limited to the facilities available. Numerical simulations can help study the process at a faster rate and for a wide range of process conditions. They also provide good prediction accuracy and deeper insights into the process. The simulation models do not require any pre-simulation, experimental or analytical results, making them highly suitable and widely used for the reliable prediction of process outcomes. The book is based on selected proceedings of AIMTDR 2016. The chapters discuss topics relating to various simulation techniques, such as computational fluid dynamics, heat flow, thermo-mechanical analysis, molecular dynamics, multibody dynamic analysis, and operational modal analysis. These simulation techniques are used to: 1) design the components, 2) to investigate the effect of critical process parameters on the process outcome, 3) to explore the physics of the process, 4) to analyse the feasibility of the process or design, and 5) to optimize the process. A wide range of advanced manufacturing processes are covered, including friction stir welding, electro-discharge machining, electro-chemical machining, magnetic pulse welding, milling with MQL (minimum quantity lubrication), electromagnetic cladding, abrasive flow machining, incremental sheet forming, ultrasonic assisted turning, TIG welding, and laser sintering. This book will be useful to researchers and professional engineers alike.
