Responses that such wartime commissions were temporary commissions in the Army of the United States (AUS), rather than in the Regular Army (RA), are usually met with blank looks. During World War II, almost all Army commissions--the authorization from the government that gives a military officer the right to command--were temporary AUS commissions. The AUS commission saw continued use in limited numbers after the war, but has been in hiatus since the early 1980s. The AUS commission was the last of several types of temporary commissions the United States government used to expand the Army officer corps during wartime. The use of temporary commissions to provide enough officers to lead the quickly growing ranks was the standard practice during most of the major wars fought by the United States until after the end of the Vietnam War, varying only in the type of commission and method for raising additional wartime forces. Only since 1980 has the US Army sought to wage war without issuing some sort of temporary commission to expand the officer corps"--

Thrown together by circumstances, amidst the horror of war and devastation, love begins to blossom. They are involved in many life threatening skirmishes, but in spite of that, they are married and while on their honeymoon, they are captured and tortured by the enemy. However, they manage a daring escape during a battle between colonial forces and the ship they are imprisoned on. The eastern alliance with years of combat training, slowly push the ill-trained colonels to the edge of the solar system, and beyond. Forced to flee the alliance tyranny, the colonials set coarse for the far off star cluster of Alfa Centauri. In route, they have their first encounter with as alien craft. After five or so years in deep space, the refugees arrive at their destination, the star system of Alpha Centauri. As time passes, and the colony becomes well established, Sean decides to explore their new world. He finds a fully intact, derelict, alien ship. After years of study, reverse engineering, and the help of alien technology derived from the derelict spacecraft, they are able to return and reclaim their heritage.

What was the nature of political opportunism in an imperial system encompassing an old world and a new? This study examines the career of an Anglo–Irish–Acadian army officer, treating in considerable detail the network of old-world connections and patrons which at times facilitated his advancement. John Bradstreet was born in Nova Scotia and died in New York. He was a major participant in colonial North American military events ranging from the capture of Louisbourg in 1745 to the British campaign against Pontiac in 1764. Early in his career he became lieutenant–governor of St. John’s, Newfoundland, and eventually rose to the rank of major–general in the British army, while linking his military performance to a relentless pursuit of profit and preferment. He was a man consistently on the periphery of both English and American societies; yet his career reveals a great deal about the mid–eighteenth–century trans–Atlantic world and about the dilemma of proponents of Empire who were viewed with increasing suspicion in both mother country and colonies. The author draws upon British, American, and Canadian archival sources, taking advantage of Bradstreet’s prolific correspondence to support and develop his narrative.
