Book A Colloquial Sinhalese Reader

Download or read book A Colloquial Sinhalese Reader written by H. S. Perera and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Colloquial Sinhalese Reader: In Phonetic Transcription, With an Introduction on the Phonetics of Sinhalese For the benefit of readers to whom phonetics is a new subject we would explain that phonetics is the science of pronunciation. The primary object of this science is to analyse the mechanism of speech with the greatest possible accuracy. Phonetic theory is mainly-concerned with describing how speech-sounds are made, and with instructing language learners how to learn to produce foreign sounds. Phonetic transcription is an adjunct to the study of phonetics. It is a special kind of writing based on the principle "one letter per phoneme." Its object is to inform the reader what sequences of sounds are used in particular words and sentences. This book is not primarily a treatise on the phonetics of Sinhalese, but we have thought that a useful purpose would be served by giving a certain amount of information on this subject in the Introduction. Learners of the language must remember that in order to profit by the texts it is essential that they should first be able to make the isolated Sinhalese sounds. Download or read book Sinhala written by Dileep Chandralal and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08-18 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sinhala is one of the official languages of Sri Lanka and the mother tongue of over 70% of the population. Outside Sri Lanka it is used among immigrant populations in the U.K., North America, Australia and some European and Middle Eastern countries. As for the genetic relation, it belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of the Indo-European languages. Although the earliest surviving literature in Sinhala dates from the 8th century A.D. its written tradition has traced a longer path of more than 2000 years. Among the major topics covered in this volume are the writing system, phonology, morphology, grammatical constructions and discourse and pragmatic aspects of Sinhala. Written in a clear and lucid style, the book presents a rich sampling of the data and serves a useful typological reference. Therefore this is required reading for not only linguists and Sinhala specialists but also to anyone interested in language, thought, and culture.

Book Colonialism and Knowledge in Grierson s Linguistic Survey of India

Download or read book Colonialism and Knowledge in Grierson s Linguistic Survey of India written by Javed Majeed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-31 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first detailed examination of George Abraham Grierson’s Linguistic Survey of India, one of the most complete sources on South Asian languages. It shows that the Survey was characterised by a composite and collaborative mode of producing knowledge, which undermines any clear distinctions between European orientalists and colonised Indians in British India. Its authority lay more in its stress on the provisional nature of its findings, an emphasis on the approximate nature of its results, and a strong sense of its own shortcomings and inadequacies, rather than in any expression of mastery over India’s languages. The book argues that the Survey brings to light a different kind of colonial knowledge, whose relationship to power was much more ambiguous than has hitherto been assumed for colonial projects in modern India. It also highlights the contribution of Indians to the creation of colonial knowledge about South Asia as a linguistic region. Indians were important collaborators and participants in the Survey, and they helped to create the monumental knowledge of India as a linguistic region which is embodied in the Survey. This volume, like its companion volume Nation and Region in Grierson’s Linguistic Survey of India, will be a great resource for scholars and researchers of linguistics, language and literature, history, political studies, cultural studies and South Asian studies.
